Title: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
Post by: Shecky on February 22, 2008, 04:00:22 PM
No thread for this here.

After a week delay (2/12 original release, to 2/19).  Apollo Justice is out... why didn't someone remind me??  I mean there was a whole week delay and no one.... ah never mind.

NP had a good story on this in a previous issue.  Looks like the writing will be pretty good.  I plan on picking it up today.

I got it Wednesday.  I haven't played it because I still have the first one to complete, then I will play the next two then finally I will get around to Apollo Justice.  I am a slow player... as in I play the game a while then don't play it for a long while, while I go and do something else.

I'm still waiting on my copy from Walmart (which I bought using the giftcard I got for the Brawl FUBAR). Should be here in 5 days, I'll see if I can get my fiancee to throw up some impressions on it because she loves the PW series.

Does this game actually require the touch screen like the last case in the first game?  I still haven't gotten a new DS.

Indeed it does...Lots of touch-screen interactive investigation...

Just picked up the game today...The first case is the very definition of epic! :heart;

Seriously, from how suave Wright is, to the battle of wits between Wright and Gavin...Holy crap it was awesome!

The only problem I have so far is I'm not too keen on Apollo's voice, but I'll manage...

Picked it up yesterday... just played through the first case and it was a excellent start.  I can't help but notice that your assistant in this game animates just like a certain past character namely Perl Fey.  Probably just a Japanese art type thing though.... or is it?

Ahaha, I'm pretty sure that it is merely coincidence...

Second case was also very awesome (Panties!  SO MANY JOKES ABOUT PANTIES!), and I love the new Perceive feature...

Edit: Fun fact about Klavier: His name means "piano" in German! (what)

Fun fact:  Has this series of games ever had a shortage of character whose name *weren't* a pun, stereotype, or play on words in some way?  Answer: NO :)

Actually it requires the microphone too... which is a big problem for me since my internal microphone is busted.  I think the use of a headset destroyed whatever logic is used to cutoff the internal mic and now it's just off for good.  Thankfully my headset mic still seems to work ok, but that means no more playing these games on the road... :(

Why, why not make a button available to "blow off" that aluminum powder??

Most of the name puns can be figured out since they are derived from English words, but Klavier isn't, so I had to enlighten the masses... =)

Game: Complete!  And man was it a fantastic ride!  Somehow the Phoenix W...Or should I say "Ace Attorney" team, is able to best themselves with each game...Especially that last case, what an absolute zinger!

But unfortunately, this game didn't work quite like Trials and Tribulations, in that it didn't answer every question (which will most likely be pulled up in the next games)...

1.  Lamiroir never revealed to Phoenix the true secrets of the "Perceive" bracelet...
2.  She also never revealed to Apollo and Trucy that she is their mother...
3.  Nor do Apollo and Trucy know they are siblings...Seriously, why aren't they told?  I could see this being a problem if "something" pops up, if you catch my drift...
4.  Phoenix seems to hint that he shares some deeper connection with Trucy that hasn't come to light...He says something along the lines of "he is the only one who understands her" (as in he understands the suffering she's been going through these past seven years)...Interesting...
5.  Kristoph's black psyche-locks...THOSE LOCKS WILL HAUNT MY DREAMS! O_O

I yearn for the next game... ;_;

I'm trying to rush thru it quick just so i can catch up and move onto Appollo Justice. I almost bought it this weekend but i know i would of been to tempted to finish the first case (since i teased myself with that flash demo online) but i resisted.

Oh really?  Well here's another interesting fact for you...In the world of fortune-reading, do you know what the FIVE OF HEARTS (the case-ending clue in Case 1) can stand for?

Relationship breakdown...(Meanings can be different for different kinds of readings, but it is always a "sorrowful" card)  Interesting stuff, no? =)

And done... Excellent game, although some thoughts:
The last case doesn't carry the same energy as previous last cases.  The pace was all off.  Quite a few ah-ha! moments, but since new facts are dug up late that's expected.  The whole jury system thing too seems odd.  It's not like it's become more of a real life simulator with the inclusion and I always saw the "one last piece of evidence, please" mentality as just part of the game.  It's like the game is asking you to make yet another connection just to flex your thoughts completely around the case.  That's fine, I was OK with that and OK with the fact that game over dialog seldom made sense or fit.  This game tries to bring it to the forefront and it kind of sticks out.

Well the one thing that always bothered me about prior cases was that the final clue tended to be something that was dropped right in your lap right at the end anyway, so it's really not a huge loss...

i started to feel that after the first 5 times but then i reminded myself its the first game i've played that mentions the word "panties" and.. even though i know it wont happen, im hoping story ends up being some guy nabbed them and put them in a used panty vending machine. i nkow its not gonna happen, but its still funny to think of

Hmmm, anyone else find it funny that the new TV series "Lie to Me" is all about a character that can sense when someone is lying via their subtle actions.... each time I see the commercial they claim the "original" concept (OBJECTION!) and I have to chuckle.  I mean it's kind of true, but at the same time...

I won't go as far as to say that this is a terrible game, but it's severly lacking compared to the original trilogy. I'm holding back the urge to write about the flaws... that would be a long post.

Yeah it had some odd points, still enjoyed playing it though.  Primary big things that were strange was the jumping around (those who played will know what I mean without giving too much away) in the final chapter - I know what they were trying to do but it was handled poorly.  Second was some of the dialog, especially that when Apollo used his "Sense" ability to check for lies.  He'd always come out of it like "I saw you do X, why are you lying to me?" and they would crack.  I would have rather seen the protagonist put the person on the spot and really drill into him, ask the tough questions and perhaps even dig up some evidence along the way.

Basically, after perceiving the lie, you'd go into a psyche-lock type scenario .... without the damn locks which were just superficial anyways.

Come to think about it, the whole bracelet thing is a non-automatic version of the mag-whatever Phoenix had.

Yeah except the bracelet was only used in court so they had to return to giving you "health" refills after court sessions instead of forcing you to accumulate them from psyche locks (which consumed health but couldn't kill you so they felt like a stupid waste of health).

What I considered stupid about this whole MASON thing was that it violated causality, you could get the nail paint in the present and then show it to a character 7 years in the past (yet the game wouldn't let you take the damn nail paint that was in the same room even though you know fully well that it's what you need). I could have understood if Phoenix had just pointed at the paint in the room and the thing from the future was just a "reminder" (well, an unlock to let you bring the topic up) but he actually says he has a bottle with him that looks like the one on the table.

So, I've played the original Phoenix Wright trilogy, and I'm really wanting to get Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, but I haven't played Apollo Justice. Will I be missing out on story stuff if I don't play Apollo Justice before AAI:ME?

Not at all.

Well, I haven't beaten AAI:ME yet, but I'm a few cases in and it seems to be mostly self contained.

AAI:ME is pretty self-contained, as is AJ... but AJ has a very weak story in itself, considering the lengths they went to to shoehorn certain things in. Until now, I would only recommend AJ for fans and completionists.

Both are self contained.  AAI:ME is a large step up in terms of interface.

Well I got Apollo Justice AND Miles Edgeworth, I'm working through AJ now. I like it just fine, so far it's not significantly worse than the previous games (except that the Klavier Gavin character is pretty lame so far), but man, has there even been a game outside of the Leisure Suit Larry series that has used the word "panties" so much?

I want to tell you that it ends up having a significant role in the plot, but honestly I don't remember much about the game anymore. just deal with the panties, please.
