Title: GoNintendo "blog"
Post by: Deguello on February 17, 2008, 09:21:41 AM
Now that GoNintendo is some kind of general media site... is it OK for people to be angry when they steal content?

For historical reference, do you remember or have examples of this? I know it came up before but I can't remember the details.
There's no point me posting my opinions of GoNintendo here. It'd be a waste of time to type and to read.

Basically any review posted by anybody has a bit of it snarfed by these guys, more specifically my Pokemon Ranger review.
Most let them slide because hey.. it's a personal blog and all that.
But now they started running ads and have Sony and Microsoft Satellite blogs, like Advanced Media or IGN and such. Doesn't it seem kind of unfair and possibly unethical for them to continue thieving content when they stand to build an internet franchise off of it, linking or not?

Kotaku gets away with it too. However, I've long maintained them to be the worst site on the Internet.
I really think it all shakes down to how they USE the review. Meta-reviews, short excerpt to illustrate a point (when properly cited), are fine. I think it's especially constructive if they use multiple sources. However, doing that essentially shuts you out as "professional." It's a blanket admission that "our opinion isn't really all that worth noting."
Just long paragraph excerpts for no point other than to create an article and register hits is another thing all together...

Another problem that compounds their content burglary is that they write their own reviews as well. I mean should they be viewed as competitors now that they've grown so large? And if so, would it be fair for them to feature other site's reviews as well as their own?

Do their reviews ever differ from the prevailing wind? If it seems they are regurgitating it could be...interesting.

How about we steal their content?

That's just it, Caliban! They suck at writing reviews and formulating opinions. Most of what they do is reader-oriented and meant to spark heated comments in the comment section.
It's like a bunch of diseased (Go)Hobos come up and steal your sandwich, and in return, they offer their socks.

In all sincerity I think that GoNintendo should stop putting links to previews and reviews from other sites. Not only is it disrespectful, but it just goes to show that whoever runs the site is lazy. I guess it's a lazy site for lazy people. I go to GoNintendo not for the previews or reviews by the way. I use GoNintendo for any videogame related info that was aggregated for my easy access, but the info is the kind that isn't factual most of the time, it's just filler I guess.

GoNintendo is just a giant post-it board. It's OK to be angry since they can't spark heated comments in the first playce without that 3rd-party content.

Gonintendo is just an aggregator. Aggressive fans flock to it because they post EVERYTHING... even completely unfounded rumors.
When people are in a certain stage of their fandom, their entire day revolves around swallowing up every piece of news they possibly can. That is why gonintendo is successful. I don't think NWR should feel threatened by them.

GoNintendo is something a little beyond just plain aggregator... they're demagogue-like. Of course, I appreciate that about them since I'm a rabid fanboi, but there's no denying that even though they have the readership to take on the trappings of bigger sites, the internet still allows them to be something of a big 'ol amorphous blob with more referential than original content.

You know, Matt Casamassina, has mentioned that GoNintendo is one of his favorite Nintendo sites. I imagine he likes it because those dirty, evil "stealing" IGN posts that Rawmeat makes every week day DRIVE traffic to IGN. Crazy huh?

That's because they both share the same ideas about journalistic integrity. To them, games journalism means never having to say you're sorry or you're wrong. Speculation runs rampant and both Matt and GoNintendo do nothing to answer questions in favor of enabling this sort of wild speculation, because it drives hits.

I'm going to take this comment back. It was a poor attempt at sarcasm. No, I don't like Gonintendo, and I don't think what they do is right.

I've got to be honest, Gonintendo is a pretty good site. Look at it. As a Nintendo fan, I can go there at the end of the day, and see absolutely everything that happened that day. And who cares if not all of the content is original? RMC has to make a living somehow, right? The site is good for me, and that's probably all that matters.
What's even better is that they've expanded. It's like they're a real, legit media powerhouse now. Pretty soon, they'll probably be one of the biggest gaming conglomerates out there, and I couldn't be more excited.
Dot points because I'm lazy. ~ They post everything they can get their hands on. That's not how a professional site works. ~ The ratio of content referenced to content generated is not a good business model. What happens when the other sites they source go under? What happens when 100% of their content referenced is rumour? ~ If they can't even keep the GoNintendo site up (couldn't reach it the last time I tried) how are they going to handle three sites? ~ The community is full of rabid fanboys and is already up there with NeoGAF and GameFAQs on my "bottom of the pit" list.

So wait, the entirety of game media is going to go under and then GoNintendo is screwed?

Traffic and advertising is what keeps game media sites alive. I may be extrapolating a bit but if you have one conglomerate then the others are fighting for the smaller part of the pie.

Now this is true. If you want something posted or noticed Go Nintendo is your best bet. They don't ask where you got the info, if its true or who you are. You just send it, they read it and if its good enough its posted, sometimes within an hour of sending it.
While I admit I go to the site in order to check out what's going on in Nintendo land it is very questionable that they post whatever they get their hands on without even checking if its worth it or not.

It's easy to get more links in/search engine rankings when you copy everybody's content.
Have you ever asked them not to copy our content?

After I posted my Octomania review I did a little research to see what publications would pick it up. There were definitely sites worse than gonintendo who literally quoted my whole review. At least gonintendo only gives a taste and links to the full review.
In any event, I personally can't stand the site. It is just spammed with garbage and they will post ANYTHING, it makes for really irritating browsing if you aren't checking it constantly.

GoNintendo serves a purpose. I generally browse it quickly once a day to pick up on any stories I might have missed otherwise. It's also handy that I don't have to visit all the gaming related sites unless they have something I'm particularly interested in reading (although, that's probably why a lot of other sites don't like GoNintendo).

I personally read GN on a regular basis, I know they post everything and anything but I'm not sure where else I could find that much info about Nintendo (except for NWR). Any links to good news gaming sites??

I never liked GoNintendo myself but not for the reasons everyone here has. I just think the site is cluttered and not very well organized.
But this (NWR) site and Gamespot are the only two sites I take time to read, besides occasionally stopping by Sega.com.

Its nice to find others who share my distaste for GoNintendo. At the end of the day, they serve no purpose. Google Reader does what they do, except 100x times better.
I can't imagine what it must be like to have no voice of your own.
