Title: RE: Master Sword Forged
Post by: NewsBot on March 06, 2004, 01:10:59 PM
Do you pretend you are the Hero of Time in your sleep?  Are you the biggest Zelda fan on the block?  Well, take a gander at what this Zelda fan owns...

When we read that Paul Hantschel, one of our forum users, owns a real-life replica of the famous Master Sword from the Legend of Zelda series, we couldn’t just leave well enough alone.  So we contacted Paul and asked for some details on his little artifact.

Mr. Hantschel emailed blacksmith Rob Miller of Castle Keep, located in Scotland, with the initial concept and original artwork.  Around a week later, Rob responded and requested detailed dimensions for every aspect of Link’s Master Sword.  After a ten-month wait period and a £1,800 transaction (around $3,300), Rob began work on the sword of legends.

The blacksmith provided updates of his progress during the one-and-a-half-month forging process.  With them he included photographs of the sword, which Paul has graciously shared with PGC:

The Master Sword: Basis for design

The Master Sword: Wax mold used to make the hilt

The Master Sword: Pre-pulled for your convenience

The Master Sword: The symbol of Hyrule

The Master Sword: One Shiny Weapon

That’s one great sword, if you ask us!  Paul agrees.  “Now I've just got to go to my local gravestone peddler and get a Pedestal of Time made up!”

I saw pictures of that a while ago...but I had no idea that one of the PGC forum members owned it.  Very awesome indeed.

Umm...no.  I did read the article.  When I said PGC member, I was referring to a forum member.  Perhaps I should have said "PGC forum member" to make it ultra-clear and leave no room for misinterpretation.

Thats a great job! I was looking for a blacksmith to make one for me, but most that I found wouldn't do video game ones. Now I might have to give this guy a ring....

In anycase that is about the greatest thing I have seen.

Good God I want one... Replicas of weapons from games are wicked. I'd like to have the weapon Piastol from Skies of Arcaida has! But honestly, the Master Sword looks great!

PaleZer0, I'm Paul. I posted a message on the Zelda forum a few days ago.

Here's a picture of the original artwork from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which this particular sword is based on, before a million people scream "But teh Master Sord is supposed to be blue!!!11"

Yep, yours is definetly from A Link to the Past...and I have to say that it was a great choice.  The A Link to the Past version of the Master Sword is by far superior to the Ocarina of Time one.

Just a quick question, how much does the sword weigh?

Yeah, I later noticed it was based on a LttP's sword, but I didn't think to change the profile :-/  Ah well...

The sword weighs about 14 pounds.

How does it handle?

That's pretty cool.  Now someone has to make a Samus power suit.  And then an Arwing.

Seriously though the next thing you need to get made is a Hylian shield.

Post by: Pale on March 07, 2004, 05:40:55 AM
Yeah, hylian shield would be cool, as would all of the different swords...like the biggoron's (sp?) sword....now that'd be sweet...

Not bad at all. The handle is more comfortable than most swords I've used, and it's balanced beautifully. It makes a lovely swishing noise at top speed, too!

What would be REALLY cool is a sword from ThunderCats (remember thundercats?) that would extend when you shouted "Thunder, THUNDER, THUNNNDERRRCATTTTTTS!!!!".. heh.

Seriously, though, cool sword. You must be the biggest Zelda fan in the world. (Or maybe just the richest..)

Are the formerly blue parts plastic or were they made of steel on the final piece?

This is just amazing

I own a replica of the Kokiri Emerald, handmade with gold and a real emerald. If you are interested, I can try to take a few pics.

We are just too freaky. :>>

Saw the funniest response on Slashdot ...

"Some day, some poor anthropologist is going to find this, and write a paper wherein they detail their amazing discovery that Zelda wasn't just a video game, but a true story, and here's the sword to prove it!

Sad part is he/she/it might be believed; more people believe in Atlantis on less evidence... "

You'd be amazed at just how much evidence there is for a lost civilization during the ice age, Rick- read Fingerprints of the Gods by Graham Hancock.

KDR, the picture of the blue parts is of the wax models used to make the molds for the final steel pieces. Rob carved the models out of that tough wax, and then poured plaster or some similar material around them to form the molds, I assume. I did something like that in my metal shop class in college, myself.

What I want to know is, WHEN did he get his sword forged? Cause he MAY have a master sword forged, but was his FIRST?
Why do I ask? Go here to find out. http://podgornydesign.com/zelda.html
-I- had that sword made for me last year. I see he went with the white design of the sword. If you look around, you'll find many different artist conceptions, even from different Nintendo released material.
So the question posed here people, is who was the FIRST true Zelda freak? HIM, or ME? My sword was complete in August of 2003.

Oh, and before I forget, nice sword Paul. It IS nice to see another guy shell out money for a real master sword, in any incarnation of it's form.
Dual ya anytime, winner keeps both swords!

Heh, no rain taken Bloodworth. He has a nice sword, but any sword owner will tell you, swords are indivudal items. Everyone has thier own way it should look. Me, I like the flatter blade with bigger hand guard. If you really want, you can take your money, and get your own version of the sword made, and try to show us both up.

Post by: Bloodworth on March 09, 2004, 10:19:03 PM
Well, I've been looking over artwork from LttP to SC2, and I think that the only difference between Paul's sword and the art is in the thickness of the blade.  The blade does seem to be thinner and flatter in the art (and perhaps there's a practical reason for the thicker blade)  but everything else about this sword seems to be remarkably faithful to the artwork.  If I did have my own done, the flat surfaced-blade would be the biggest difference.  Not sure if I would actually go with the blue hilt from later designs or stick with the LttP silver.

If I wanted a functional blade made for hard handed sword swings, I think I'd want to go with the blade type in OOT. Super thick, take a LOT of punishment, but it'd be HEAVY as a bitch. Pauls sword is 14 pounds he said, mine is only 8, but still. You try swinging 8 pounds around and then stop it at the end of the swing. Harder than you think.

*Edit* Whops, I said function blade instead of functional. Oops!

Post by: Coarse_Limely on March 10, 2004, 11:37:45 AM
The whole reason I wanted one scaled to my height with the heavier hilt and pommel was so that I could work my way towards swinging it like a man. 8 pounds isn't going to get you muscles very fast. Also, no offense, but I think I can safely say that my sword would cleave yours in twain like warm butter. Ever seen the GAMECUBE Soul Calibur II commercial with the weapons dealer? Yeah. Something like that. You get what you pay for, and I paid a lot.

if i had the money i would make Nightmares version of soul calibur

it would have to be made in the east however.....soul edge is from the west and is EVIL

Now there's a hefty project. Not quite as hefty as Gatsu's Dragon Slayer from Berserk, but darn close. The Dragon Slayer's not even sharp. Gatsu doesn't so much swing it as he does drop it on people. MAN.
