Title: The Official "I Played Brawl" Impressions Thread (spoilers)

What do you want to know/see?

Ask for something, and I'll check it out/post pics of it.

While I don't want to have every trophy and sticker spoiled for me, I'd love to see some of the obscure ones that haven't been seen elsewhere. And a few views of that Ouendan one (http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/1631/6prglmdjw1.png), if you've got it.

This post, and topic in general, should probably be marked with spoilers of some kind.

...Anyway, I was wondering if Toon Link appears at all in the SSE? I don't want to know his role, or how much he appears, but simply if he shows up at some point or another.

He does, but apparently he's "hidden"...

I want to see a nice video showing some of the real differences between the clones in Brawl.

I also want to see a pics of Olimar in action.

Finally, I want to see some of the really funky hidden stages.

My wet dream would be Nintendo announcing either

a)time released hidden characters that will only start being available after US release.
b)Download content includes new characters.

Ok finally someone at school brought the game in and of course there was a tremendous crowd around the small 20 inch television.  I only got to play 2 matches but both were really awesome.

Ok here are my two characters I played and my impressions.

King Dedede:
Awesome character I never play heavyweights but he really changes my mind.  He is a powerhouse and you rarely have to ever care about getting smacked off the stage.  We played 3 stock matches and 2 of my deaths were my own fault, they only managed to kill me once.  All of his moves either deal a lot of damage or knockback, sometimes both.  My only complaint with Dedede was how slow he was, it didnt bother me so much unless the smash ball appeared.  This can be an issue on big stages like  the one I played on, New Pork City.  I would be on one side of the screen and the smash ball would appear on the other side of the screen and it  would take FOREVER to get over there usually resulting in the other players getting to it before me.  On the bright side while some characters need to beat the smash ball to death, Dedede managed to swipe it in one or two hits.  In a 3 stock match I managed to get the Smash ball twice, not bad if I don't say so.  His final smash is awesome btw, it creates so much chaos everywhere, it really is great for 4 player brawls.

Pokemon Trainer:
I would say that of the 3 pokemon Squirtle and Charizard were my favorites because one is the light weight character and the other is the heavy.   It almost becomes a Zelda like zen moment switching between the two, balancing the powers.  I cant say much about the characters because the stage we played on was a user created stage, one fixed with a pretty closed off square box that allowed for a lot of bouncing.  It was more chaotic than a normal match by far.  Charizard really ended up being one of faves which is again scary because I never liked heavy weights.  He has 3 jumps and and a fairly powerful Up B.  I did use Ivysaur every now and then and his vine whip did save me once using the much better tether recovery method.

Other worthy notes:

-The landmasters can fit through a small square sized hole even though it is larger than the hole.

-Pit can cheat with his continuous spin blade attack.  He managed several times to get people stuck in the whirlwind and kept them there damaging at least 30-80% damage.

-Diddy Kong is awesome and a nice balanced character.

-Kirby is way buffed up from his Melee version and won SEVERAL matches.

-Toon Link is far superior to Twilight Princess Link who has been nerfed badly

-Jigglypuff is still way awesome and had the crowd laughing hysterically with her final smash which is way awesome.

-Samus is nerfed but ZSamus is nice

-Ike is powerful and well loved

-Marth is still good

-Pikachu is powerful much more than melee

-Snake was a popular choice and won several matches.  His final smash is awesome for 4 player brawls.

Overall Brawl is definitely superior.   Everyone claiming that brawl is even more chaotic and crazier is absolutely correct, my heart was racing and my adrenaline was rushing, it was completely awesome.

Alright, so I need to get the Oendan trophy/stickers/EBA stuff.

With those three non-SSE characters, you walk into a door, it goes to a quick cut-scene of that character on his/her stage, and then you fight and unlock said character.  They have no impact on the story, and you have to have beaten the game to make their doors show up.

I'll nab pictures of all the hidden stages that I remember are hidden and aren't on the Dojo yet.  I don't have the patience to deal with videos, though.  None of the clones are as close as the melee clones, though.  The closest would be Toon Link, Ganondorf, and Falco.  Toon  Link is actually more different from Link because Link changed a lot, but he's very similar to Young Link.  His Bow is better, but his boomerang isn't as good.  Ganondorf's a moves look more Ganondorf-y, but they haven't changed so much.  His forward B now grabs, rather than uppercuting or hitting down, and his Up+B still grabs, but has a hit at the end of that.  Other than that, he's about unchanged.  Falco's down+b, as you likely know, has changed.

Like I said, I'll take pictures of the stages, I know I've unlocked them all, you get a message.  I've also unlocked all the AT's, so there's no question about that.  The last trophy I unlocked is from Band Brothers.

Samus's projectiles are nerfed, her charged shot, mostly.  However, a lot of her "melee" attacks were buffed.

Speaking of... does anyone have a full list of "nerfs" and "buffs" with comparison to Melee? I have seen a few mentioned here and there, like that Link's Up+B has had its power reduced and can now charge ... or that the bombs got a general buff in terms of power, but never seen a more complete list of changes to previous characters.

your inability to use her doesn't equal to cheapness. Samus was far from being cheap, she was too slow, as were most of her attacks... the only "awesome" attack Samus had in Melee was her Meteor Smash...

I agree with AZ Samus was far from being over-powering in Melee.

I couldn't use her cause I sucked with her and didn't try real hard.

She's cheap because every person I have fought against that used her, spamed the missiles.  Maybe that makes the player cheap, but it annoyed me.

That may not be your experience, but it is mine.

I don't remember.  I'm basing this off of challenges.  I had a few random challenges that looked like there were Oendan things inside, and I finished unlocking all of those specific ones today, so I was just going to go through the trophies and stickers and take pictures of them.  The good news is that I've figured out how to order my stickers by series, so I can get all the ones I have of them (I have about 628 unique stickers right now) and the trophies are already grouped that way, so I know I can get them all pretty simply, at least of the ones I have.

I nearly have 400 trophies, but I'm getting new trophies at a faster rate than I'm getting new stickers, so I've no idea how likely I am to find any specific missing trophies.

Bowser is better.  In fact, I should say that other than his forward+B, I'd say Dedede feels more like Bowser used to in Melee.  Bowser's a little faster and his moves were made quicker.

Well after Bowsers poor performance in Melee, I'm guessing he's been training pretty heavily for the last 6 years straight.  That would explain why he's much faster now as well.

I'm all about the kinda slow, but powerful, sword-wielding badasses.

I've been playing hardcore for a week, usually in 4man games, I think I'd like to chime in on some of the characters.

- Ike is a great character for me to trash talk as a baby character because he's easy to play and his smashes are super good. Nobody really seemed interested in playing Marth when they could play as Ike, but maybe that's just new guy syndrome (Marth's up-B seems like a better offensive tool now, but I don't really play Marth...)
- I love playing Diddy Kong, everybody else hates him. He can lock down guys with his bananas and it's hilarious. Especially that jerk Sonic.
- I also love playing Rob, he's a good all-round kinda guy with good mobility and recovery, but despite that he seems really slow to get around the level. The longer you don't use his eye laser, the more push it has, so it's good to save as a surprise/cut through 3 opponents at once
- I play Samus primarily (although I'm hooked on Metaknight) and she seems exactly the same to me, despite some people saying she's floatier/nerfed/buffed/whatever. Taunting fast enough to switch suits is a massive pain in the butt and probably not feasible in a lot of matches. I don't think you can air-dodge and do the Z-button-air-grab anymore but it's a non-issue anyway since air dodging no longer kills your momentum
- Bowser is cool, I started playing him for comedy in Melee right before, so the differences are pretty fresh in my mind. His smashes are still strong as hell, and he no longer gets smacked about of the arena like a little bitch. I'm not sure if his down+b recovery is faster, but it seems like it (I'm not used to using that move, lol). His forward B now grabs people and flip-bodyslams them exactly like Hugo in Third Strike (double lol) and that also works in midair. It's rad.
- I can't like Pit no matter how hard I try

The game is freaking amazing. My local blockbuster had it and since I don't have a Wii but my friend does but he doesn't have the money nor the membership I decided to rent it to check it out. All I can say is that the game is amazing. I love using Samus,Pokemon Trainer,Pit,Ike and Link. I don't like DeeDee that much, but I reconize that he is a powerhouse that I may need to practice more to get better with him.  Pokemon Trainer is awesome and I think all 3 pokemon are well balance with Charizard being the powehouse, squirtle being the quick one and Ivysaur being in the middle of both and with good anti air attacks. Ike is awesome and so is Marth, I think both FE guys are a bit OP IMO. We unlocked: Snake,Marth,Luigi,Captain Falco and Ness. This is the game hardcore players where waiting so this is a must buy for every Nintendo fan out there. It's that damn good. Now I have to start savin some money to get myself a Wii and this fantastic game. If you hve your doubts rent it first and then you'll see if it's worth your money. I guarantee you it is.

Ehhhhhh.... Still not feeling this game yet. It's really really slow compared to Melee and it is still really awkward to play. More impressions to come soon.

UPDATE 1:
Well, day 2 and I still can't get into the pacing of the game. It definitely feels like a mix between 64 and Melee, which is definitely throwing me off. They totally destroyed Ganondorf which is also disheartening, considering he was my main Melee character. I'm really hoping Sonic or ROB is awesome, because at this point, I really have no idea who I could choose as my main fighter.

Side note about online: Serious fail. Not sure if it is because it's day one and the servers are overloaded, but I can't connect to anyone to play online and the two friend matches I played were really messed up. The first one lagged out like crazy, and the second had this weird buffering where I would push the button and 2 seconds later the move would actually happen. It was extremely annoying. I hope this situation is rectified on Nintendo's server side.

I want to like Ike, but he's probably too slow for me, at least from what little I've played of him...As I said, I actually like Link now...Fox doesn't seem to have as much distance on his Fire Fox, but overall I still enjoy using him as I have the past games...Pikachu feels a bit more like his original form, but I have to get a bit more in on him...I REALLY like Zero Suit Samus, though I have to get used to the fact that her Down+Smash only hits in front of her...

So at the moment it looks like Fox and ZSS for me, but I haven't even tried a majority of the characters yet...

I really like Snake and Pit. I've spent most of my time using them. Ike is a powerhouse. He may be too powerful. Slow, but his Smash attack is insane.

Wolf (I don't know if that's really a spoiler, but I thought I'd just play it safe) is pretty cool too.

I've been playing with a customized nunchuk+remote layout, but I'm not really feeling it. Hmm I need a tighter grip, so maybe I should use the GC controller, or maybe the classic controller.

I was kind of hesitant to play as Olimar, but I gave him a try on smash the targets, and he seems quite playable. I like him. He's probably going to be one of my main fighters.

I'm feeling both ZSS and Link. I'm trying to like Ike but I have a big problem with him since I can't comeback when I'm far away from the stage like I can with other chars. I still think he is a powerhouse just like Marth and Snake. Snake's smash last too long imo. Samus final smash is just too awesome and ZSS final smash can be very effective if you have oponents very close to you. I use it once and got everybody trown out of the stage. Not so sure how I feel about the pity smash yet as I was losing and got one and alsmot won the whole thing. Now it's just a race to see who gets the final smash but if we ever get tired of that (and I don't think we will) we'll just turn it off and play like we used to in melee.

My roommate's an Olimar, some tips:

He's quick.  Amazingly quick, with range, as well.
Throw the white Pikmin.  They're amazing that way, and useless anywhere else.
You don't need six Pikmin if it's going to hurt you to pull up all six.  Wait until you're safe to save them.
Range, Range, Range, Range, and range.
His UP+B is "magnetized," but you probably knew that.  It can't grab a ledge if someone's on a ledge, even if he/she is hit out of the way of it.
Each Pikmin color has a specialty.  From memory, Blue throws harder, red smashes harder, purple throws harder.  I think Yellow's specialty is the unique throw path, but other than that, I don't believe it does greater damage or knockback than others.
His down+b, and maybe other moves, has/have super armor.

Today at work I've got Nintendo thumb.  I haven't had Nintendo thumb in years!  I've noticed it's more painful to use the classic controller than the Wavebird but when you've got people over and not enough Cube controllers to go around you have to work with what you have.

Though I think the best part is the free Wii cap I got when I bought the game!  That's become the winner's crown with my friends.  Whoever's on the current win streak wears the cap.

I appear to be off with getting smash attacks off consistently but that might be because I've only used the classic controller thus far.  I'll give the Wavebird a go today after work.  Though it also could be because I haven't played Melee in years.

My brother and I haven't been this excited about a game since Pikmin 2.  We spent months playing Melee and we'll likely do the same with Brawl.  I've also tried to remain spoiler free so new characters showing up are surprises to me.

It's tendencies like this that keep head lice in business.

As for impressions...

I like the character balance I've seen so far, though I haven't exactly tried many space animals. I like Olimar a lot and that's largely due to how unique he is. Dedede is both awesome and lovable. Wario is hilarious and I lament the fact that I can't chew on SSE enemies with him. Bowser has been improved as well, but I haven't played many matches with him yet.

Also, they made Zelda playable, and I mean WITHOUT Shiek.

Ian, if you find the Classic controller uncomfortable to hold you should pick up a Nyko Classic Controller Grip (yeah, it's Nyko, but it has no electronic parts, it's just a couple pieces of plastic, and it's made very well). It makes it a lot more comfortable to use the analog stick, and Amazon's got them for 5 bucks.

Thanks for the recommendation but I think the problem is the analog stick itself.  It doesn't seem as big as the Wavebird's.  It also feels harder.  My thumb is hurting because it seems like there's more of a shock against it when I smash the stick.  The Wavebird is providing more cushioning due to a rubbery stick.

My friends and I have good hygiene.  It's not like we're a bunch of little kids here.  :)

I am extremely impressed with Olimar and like him also.

Ike is rediculous powerful, so is King DeDeDe.

I just tried it out and I think you're right, the Classic controller's analog stick does feel harder than the Wavebird's. I wonder if it has something to do with the Cube controllers having 3 ridge rings and the Classic Controller only having 1, but the nunchuk's stick feels softer than the Classic Controller too.

ahahaahahahaha hardcore players don't play Wii.  You're on the wrong system.

This would be great with a Burger King crown.  Loser should wear the King mask, and have their vision obstructed.  To win with the mask on is a real victory.

A bit of an update:

I still greatly dislike the new Link. The removal of his continuous attack from melee (these moves now rape in Brawl) is very disheartening, the speed at which he attacks and rebounds from attacks is very slow and overall after playing through many modes with him I just have to take him off my "main" list.

With that said . . .

I finally have gotten used to the new gameplay mechanics as it is indeed a mix of 64 style and melee style. After playing many hours with some friends the other night I have to say multi-player is still a blast even without a main heh.

Things I ABSOLUTELY HATE about the game though still remain though:

1) Why the hell did they remove the ability to gently press on the shoulder buttons to perform your characters shield/block move? If anything is throwing me off the most it is this. I understand that gameplay wise to match the other controllers they can no longer have a "press lightly for a slower going away shield" feature but by God I wish they mad a light press now just do the damned shield full tilt. More times than not I feel like I am blocking and about to dodge out of the way of something but I end up not because well...yeah need I say more?

2) Why the bloody hell are items SO DAMNED SMALL? Who the hell thought it was a good idea to have fucking pea sized items? "Hmm is it a bomb or is it a mine or is it food? who knows!" Very irritating to say the least . . .

3) Nintendo's mentally challenged decision to NOT allow you to transfer save data to a SD card. Why bring your save file to a friends house when you can just bring your whole system I guess was the mind set here.

Things I LOVE about the game:

1) Final Smash is fantastic. It adds a whole new level of franticness to the game that I just love. Having 4 people just stop smashing each other only to try and chase after that Final Smash orb is just hilarious and a lot of fun.

2) The music and graphics are absolutely beautiful. I love how all the characters mesh so well together from all their respective games.

3) It's still the most fun multiplayer game on the market.

4) The stages are really fun to play on and have a lot of variety.

Things that URK me about the game:

The terrible menu set up.

Overall I am having fun with the game but I think spending so much time watching the dojo updates killed a lot of the "Wow!" factor for me. Which is to be expected and no fault of the game. Many of my co-workers are wondering why I am not more pumped about the game and I simply say "I feel like I have played through it all already, I just want to unlock everything and play people in VS". I feel like nothing can really surprise me at this point and just wanna blow past all the collecting/unlocking stuff and get down to the nitty gritty.

I've been playing the game for the last day or two and have been loving it; it's not entirely unlike Melee, but it's got more than enough changes for me to move on with pleasure. Some notes:

-The new Link is indeed not as close to my heart as his Melee counterpart, though when I realized I didn't have to charge up the spin attack, that helped matters. Still, while they made him lighter and faster, they didn't do so enough to balance out how much weaker he is now. I was starting to play Young Link more than Link near the end of my time with Melee anyway, so when I unlock Toon Link, I'll probably glom on to him.

-As others have said, Kirby is mercifully restored to his 64 version (they even fixed that roll of his that they added in Melee [can't remember which attack it is], it now involved kicks instead of a Kirby fireball and it just flows a lot better). I wish he had his own stage besides Green Greens, but it's alright.

-King Dedede and Ike are like tanks. Can't work 'em, though I've been making a little progress (actually won my first online match with Ike). Is it just me or should DeDeDe's B and Down-B attacks  have been switched?

-Pit in his black outfit looks like a woman from the 80s in a tacky dress. It's true.

-Someone was saying the music was too quiet and I think they were right; I moved the sound bar two notches to the right and it seems better.

-Squirtle's finicky as hell; he keeps sliding all over the place, and I keep dying with his side-B attack taking me off the stage; when I'm playing PT I have to stay as Charizard most of the time if I want to win.

-Snake's also finicky, but he's strong, so I'm fine. I've only spent a little bit with Sonic but I dig him alright. I like his stage too, of which I'm apparently in the minority.

-This may also apply to Melee too, but why are there bombs in the 100-Man Melee? (had to do it b/c I was impatient to get Falco) It's hard enough to last that long with random explosions threatening to make you repeat the same 4 minutes over and over again. And for Brawl specifically, what sadist thought it was okay to have other characters appear randomly? I shouldn't have to fight off Meta Knight and 4 alloy guys at 90% health.

-SSE is awesome; so awesome, in fact, that I feel stupid for even listening to the people who were hating on it before. Though i guess I can see their viewpoint...I dunno, to me, I like it for the same reason I enjoyed Super Princess Peach; I knew it wasn't terribly long to begin with, but I loved the platforming and just the general feel of the game (and the character designs are great, honestly) so I'm glad to spend time going through the mode, especially since i don't have much opportunity here for VS matches. I feel bad for the people who blasted their way through it 8 hours after launch day then complained it was too short. Honestly, people. Also, the Brawl engine is great for platforming, I don't get why all the reviews said they weren't.

I don't mind the bombs.  What I mind is that the items are so small it's hard to tell what they are.  I keep picking up Smart Bombs and throwing them at my feet because I think they're Pokeballs.  Not a good thing to do.

Nah, I can tell the difference between those two (though that's probably because I never play Smash Bros. without items); it's the motion sensor bomb and the screw attack that have me tripped up tho. Why is the latter so small and purple in this game when there's another small and purple item already in the game? But eh whatever, neither of them are particularly dangerous.

And I'm not sure if I said it in this thread or not, but actually I was wrong when I said that the delete data option was hidden away in the menus; not only is it on the top layer of Options, but it's right next to My Music, which makes me nervous whenever I go mess with songs. But on the bright side, it teaches a good lesson in restraint!

Does anyone know the exact number of stickers and trophies that are possible to collect?
I know that there must be at least 500 trophies, and also 500 stickers because their respective challenges say so, but isn't that a little too ridiculous. I don't mind, but the trophy and sticker appearance is starting to become too repetive. Maybe I should play Coin Launcher with 1000 coins to see if I can get more variety or something.
