Title: Monster Lab 3D Fighter/RTS/POKEMON/RPG
Post by: ShyGuy on January 29, 2008, 03:22:08 PM
Pretty new game, the video has me intrigued. You build your Frankenstein-ish monster and battle ONRINE.

Game Informer gave a pretty optimistic appraisal of this game's potential in their last issue.  Now, if they only to make it an FPS, Game Informer might award it Game of the Year (or, Wii Game of the Year, at least).  Personally, I'm looking forward to it with relish; a Pokemon-esque game that I can admit to playing in public is right up my alley.

Gah, what the hell are they thinking with that lighting??? Look, harsh rim lighting like that just pronounces the lowpolyness of your models! It's fugly!

I was going to make a joke about it looking like an early generation PS2 game, but then discovered that you are right. The lighting makes it look really ugly.

Um....

This isn't a fighter...this is an RPG.

Looks good!

Yeah I was surprised too, but even more surprised that it turned out to be a turned based fighter. I'm interested.

It looks to be Pokemon-esque in a variety of ways. I remember hearing jus the basics a while ago and having my interest peaked. It doesn't seem to have turned out to be what I had initially expected, but I am still interested nonetheless. It's just too bad that the monsters aren't more grotesque and spurt blood everywhere upon loosing limbs! :P

Hmm, this is way more than a fighter. It sounds like it has a lot of depth, and it looks decent to boot!

I'm sure it will be largely ignored in sales like Zack and Wiki and No More Heroes. :(

No More Heroes had enough glaring flaws that it's not a big surprise it was ignored. I like it overall, but it definitely had problems, gameplay and story wise.

Care to elaborate?

Sure, though this certainly won't be all inclusive as I haven't played the game at all since beating it a week after it was released.

The story was outright boring after the initial "cool factor". Nothing happened--ever. Judging by this and Killer7, Suda51 seems to have problems balancing story and gameplay. Killer7 had a bizarre story with absolutely no gameplay, whereas NMH had generally fun gameplay with absolutely no story. You can claim that the game's story was supposed to be a parody or a spoof, but I think that's just a weak mask for what ended up being a very, very bland plot.

On the gameplay side we have, right off the top of my head, a completely empty city. This served little purpose outside of the two or three blocks that actually housed interactive shops. This made sure that there was very little to do while not massacring hordes of enemies leading up to the boss fight. This sprawling wasteland of an overworld made it extremely frustrating to earn enough money. If you finished a job, instead of simply doing it again, you had to drive all the way back to the other side of town to activate it again. This is also true upon failing and having to redo certain missions.

Now don't get me wrong, I had fun playing the game overall, but it didn't feel as if it were quite a finished product.

Still way more story than Mario Galaxy and Pikmin offered.

It's laffable that story somehow matters beyond "here's your gear/abilities, here's your objective, now go do something."

Hey guys I played this, it was really cool, I think you guys should really watch this. Building your monsters was really fun because of the little stuff, you have to weld you pieces and if you don't weld well the pieces aren't as strong! really really cool!

This game was pretty cool at PAX. I suggest people give it a look. It seemed to be well off in their intent and it sure seemed cool. Effort was definitely there.

I will try my best. Too many games to play.

Edit: I went to see if I could get this game today, but got no such luck. Pre-ordered it just to make sure I get it, and on Monday the 17th as was noted by the clerk as its ship/release date at least for Canada.

I've been playing the review copy of this and to be honest, I'm underwhelmed. Creating monsters thus far doesn't really feel creative, rewarding, or fun.

The game is plagued with constant loading screens, and some really tedious decisions (healing your monster after each battle), and the mini-games are repetitious and gimmicky. The one thing I hoped would hold it up was the combat, but even that proves quite easy and boring after a number of battles. Perhaps the difficulty picks up later in the game making everything more tolerable, but I'm currently leaning towards about a 6.

I don't think I've seen the Wii version on shelves here, only the PS2 version...
