Title: Kirby an UNLOCKABLE CHARACTER?
Post by: NWR_pap64 on December 29, 2007, 07:22:01 PM
While reading through some impressions of the Jump Festa demo I stumbled upon this thread at the Smash Boards. To try and sum it up, the poster believes that the roster shown at the E4A demo might actually be the starting roster. The poster goes on to explain that perhaps the reason many of the veterans, Kirby included, are missing is because you have to unlock them by playing through the Subspace Emissary mode.
Since we won't have updates to discuss for a whole week I thought this would make for a neat debate (even though it started on another forums... :p).
What do YOU think? Is the guy full of it and putting too much thought into an early demo or is he onto something?

Kirby is at the absolute beginning of the SSE. Why would you have to unlock him? And aren't all 3rd party characters locked? If so, then Sonic shouldn't be on there. Also, I thought that all the characters on the dojo were supposed to be starters (save the 3rd party guys). One more thing, of all the characters we've seen in SEE vids, Ike is NOT one of them and neither is Metaknight. We've also scarcely seen the rest of 'em, if at all. And another thing, why am I up so late caring about this? Oh right, I'm bored. (One mystery down, several to go.)

I've always taken it as...
When a character is introduced on the website with a "WARNING: CHALLENGER APPROACHING!" header, then that means that character is an unlockable in the game. Ike, Pokémon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Solid Snake, Lucas, Sonic, and King Dedede would all be unlockables then. And that's a totally believable list -- which would include, of course, lots more unlockables, too.
15 to 20 starters? 8 unlockables that we know of -- with 12, possibly, hiding in the distance.
I believe that the 8 that we know of -- the ones listed on the website -- are the ones we'll be unlocking via the Subspace Emissary mode. And the rest will come from that, Events mode, AND meeting certain conditions in Brawl multiplayer matches.

I'll say that the 20 Ninty characters we have right now on the Dojo are going to be the starters...I mean, the last revealed newcomer, King Dedede, shows up in the very first Event Mode stage...

Those headers indicate characters who weren't in Melee.

I remember when Kirby wasn't in a trade show demo for Super Smash Bros.: Melee, some people went so far as to believe that Kirby wasn't playable from the start.
Who knows how close the Jump Festa demo is to the complete version of Super Smash Bros.: Brawl but I would think (admittedly the only basis is my belief, probably less valid) that the initial eight characters in the original Super Smash Bros. would never have to be unlockable characters in any Super Smash Bros. games in the near future.
Unless Nintendo takes a major hiatus from producing games featuring Mario, Link, Samus, DK, Pikachu, Fox, Yoshi, and Kirby, I don't think we shouldn't expect them right from the get-go. (At the time of the first game, we hadn't seen a game featuring Samus for a few years...)

This game is a complete rush-job since Captain Falcon isn't in it.

Don't be ridiculous. Silly gimmick thread. Sakurai is a giant Kirby fanboy (hence his lame Sonic-like friends being included) so Kirby is probably the most important character in the game for the dev team, he'll be in your face from the first second of the game

Fixed for accuracy.

Pit didn't have that header above him when he was introduced on the site...

Really? Hmm.

Yep. Ike was the first one to have the header above him. Pit didn't have it. Nor did Wario or Zero Suit Samus.
That's why I believe those with headers will be unlockables.

Pit had it at the E3 2006 trailer.

Everyone at Smash Boards is a complete moron anyway.
