Title: Brawl has gone gold in Japan
Post by: NWR_pap64 on December 27, 2007, 10:41:31 AM
This thread on the Smash boards confirms that the Japanese version of Brawl has gone gold. Meaning that the game is pretty much done and ready for release, meaning that a delay is out of the question, at least in Japan.

So everything from the final roster to the game modes is set in stone, no changes can be done at the last minute.

True, they can still delay it in the US and Europe but it won't be because the game will be going through an overhaul. It might be for a small change. Whatever the Japanese are getting the rest of the world will be getting it too.

Take that as you will...

That's okay, I'll take it as-is...

A delay is still possible, it just cost Nintendo dearly now as it should always....

One thing I forgot to mention is that even if they are planning on adding region specific extras and features they could've easily done so during the development of the Japanese version.

After all, we HAVE gotten English screens, so that means that translation work was done while the game was being developed.

They still probably had to leave things out of the game, like stereo sound and decent online setups.

Going gold has nothing to do with release. It just means that a certain number of people have pre-ordered the game.

I'm feeling the same way.

Dirk, were you kidding or were you serious? Do you know what going gold means?

I bet he's thinking of the music industry, where "gold" is tied to sales numbers.

He is.  Gold has a different meaning in video games/software, and most people who don't explicitly track release information don't know it, though it's becoming more commonly used for Nintendo software, it's still a rarer term, mostly used for PC titles, and has drifted to video games in the last three or four years, I'd say.  Confusing the idea behind "gold" isn't something to laugh about, and it hardly is a symbol of general ignorance, either.

Oh wait, you were defending him. I thought you were agreeing with Dirk.

I thought he was being sarcastic, but then thought that he was being serious, hence the confusion.

I can picture it now...

<spoiler> Tingle, Porkey, Sora and the rest of the Melee cast, clones included, are secret playable characters! </spoiler>

We'll know the final roster before Ty gets his hands on his copy, I'd wager.

But I'll never believe him again, not after I got so excited over Maya being dead...

Nothing? Really?

You should spend 100% of your time on Gamefaqs, then. They'll believe anything.

In any case, the only spoilers I've ever been "mad" about would be the videos of the Japanese SSBM roster which showed that they had actually turned Ganondorf into a clone of Falcon which, to this day, is still idiotic.

Going gold
"The gold or general availability release version is the final version of a particular product. It is typically almost identical to the final release candidate, with only last-minute bugs fixed. A gold release is considered to be very stable and relatively bug-free with a quality suitable for wide distribution and use by end users. In commercial software releases, this version may also be signed (used to allow end-users to verify that code has not been modified since the release). The expression that a software product "has gone gold" means that the code has been completed and "is being mass-produced and will be for sale soon." Other terms for the version include gold master, golden master, “GM”, gold release, or gold build.

The term gold anecdotally refers to the use of "gold master disc" which was commonly used to send the final version to manufacturers who use it to create the mass-produced retail copies. It may in this context be a hold-over from music production. In some cases, however, the master disc is still actually made of gold, for both aesthetic appeal and resistance to corrosion."

That's obnoxious. Why can't we just say "finished"? That's a lot less stupid.

Says the person who regularly uses 4chan slang to describe tourney players.

Really though I cannot believe someone who obviously is in to both games and the internet has never heard the term "gone gold" in reference to a game being finished before.

But it is no worse then when I, amongst a group of my friends, asked "does anyone want DP?", in reference to Dr. Pepper, and everyone just started laughing. It is not like I am some  dictionary of porn industry lingo.

I've never heard anyone abbreviate Dr. Pepper to "DP." I've heard "Dr. P." before though.

Oh in Texas many people use the DP slang.  But, Doctor Pepper is a product of Texas and we are very proud of our drink here.

(Actually Texas is proud of almost everything it produces...we are kinda crazy that way.)

That's because Retro Studios is based in Austin, which practically doesn't even count as part of Texas.

Its not that people are not used to hearing the phrase gone gold,  its just that lately they've heard it used for other uses, and are wondering if the meaning is changing, one meaning could possibly become obscure and obsolescent.

I think they use gold master discs to duplicate the other game discs from, so it makes sense.  I am right about this, right?

If anything it is Austinites that feel that they are not part of Texas. When ever anyone around where I live now ( I just moved to the Houston area) ask were I moved from, and I say Austin, they ask me why I had moved away from such a beautiful place.

Hell, when I lived in Austin me and my friends used to check out Retro all the time, but we were too afraid to knock on the door. At my old retail Job we would get people from Retro coming in all the time, not to mention people from NC Soft and Rooster Teeth.

I kind of meant the first part of my post as jab at people in Austin (I keep forgetting that tone does not translate well on the internet). There are quite a few elitist snobs in Austin who think that they are better than the rest of Texas, the U.S., and the World, and that would probably be my least liked part of the city if I did not like to argue.

You're not an elitist snob if it's true.

I never said that the aforementioned elitist snob's are not likable.

All this talk about Austin makes me want to move back.
