Title: Glory Days 2?
Post by: KDR_11k on November 29, 2007, 04:51:42 AM
Dunno, at first I ignored the game because the box art looked like a second rate AW ripoff but then I looked at the back of the box and it said shmup/RTS hybrid, reviews don't seem too shabby either. Anyone know about it? I'm now considering picking it up tomorrow or the day after.

I liked the game (and Glory Days, aka Super Army War) a lot. A lot of people are calling it a Choplifter variant, but it's really a hybrid of the old Apple II games Rescue Raiders and Wings of Fury. Unfortunately, I haven't played it in months because the L trigger on my DS broke, but since I recently got a new DS, I can start playing it again.
Basically, you have to destroy the enemy units before they can advance on your base. You also protect your units so they can reach the enemy base. In the beginning, the units are generated automatically, but eventually you can call them up on demand (if you have the resources).
There's all sorts of ways you can fight. You can use a helicopter, which has great anti-tank weaponry, or you can use an airplane, which has great anti-air capability and still packs a very good anti-tank weapon. You can load infantry into a helicopter and paradrop them to take over buildings and harass the enemy, you can build a bunch of tanks to hold off the enemy armies, call in airstrikes to blanket an area with bombs, call in massive paradrops, rescue civilians to earn more money, and more. There's also a level design tool.
If anybody hated landing airplanes in Super Army War, you'll be glad to know that they simplified it a lot. It's a lot harder to crash while landing now.
I have three problems with Glory Days 2:
1) my hand hurts after a while when playing it. Since one has to press left and right a lot during the game, my thumb tires. I had the same problem with Super Army War. In Glory Days 2, you can use the stylus as an alternate control form, but then my other hand got tired from gripping the stylus so much.
2) It's missing a lot of the good stuff from Rescue Raiders. I hope the features go into Glory Days 3. Basically, in Rescue Raiders you could destroy the buildings, but it let you build engineers to repair them, too. There were more building types, such as MG bunkers, extra helipads, and command centers, so there was more strategy in holding territory rather than just blowing up stuff. Infantry was much more useful in Rescue Raiders.
3) It uses a PASSWORD system for the campaign instead of save data. Why?!?!

Are you sure that's Glory Days 2 that uses the passwords? My copy uses regular save data and no review even mentioned passwords.

Well, it has been a few months... no, I'm not sure. *blush* I'll check.
Yeah, you're right and I'm wrong. Sorry about that! I should be more careful about what I say before checking the facts. I'm actually pretty embarrassed... I'm usually much better about such things.

Does it matter? You'll have the game in your possession the day it comes out.

This just drives home the importance of marketing... not even marketing for convincing people to buy the game, just marketing for people to know the game even EXISTS in the first place...wow.
