Title: Everybody's Nintendo Channel
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on November 26, 2007, 08:19:23 PM
Was just released in Japan
From NeoGaf:
Quote ust download the channel and play around for half an hour
- Once you log in the channel, you see a highlight video of new content (of course it's WiiFit right now) - You can see most upcoming and recently released Wii and NDS games. They include description, TVCM, and promotion video (if they have) - Those videos are direct streaming. Since I'm not in Japan, the connection is not stable enough. For a 3-min video, I need to wait 4 times for buffering during video play... - You can select full-screen by simply clicking the video. For TVCM, they are 4:3 so they cannot occupy full-screen. Wii promotion video are 16:9 though. - If I don't get it wrong, you rate games by giving it a ranking (slide bar from bad to good). You also need to tell Nintendo your age, sex, and if you think it is easy/difficult. (Market research ftw!) - DS Demo: Brain Training 2, Flash Focus, Tamagochi 3, E-book from Nintendo, and some other "non-games" that I didn't hear of... - You need to stream the demo every time from Nintendo server. And then you can use download play to get the demo. The speed of connection is nice here.
A link to the video and quick summary via Wired.com
Quote In a nutshell: a lot. Watch all kinds of videos, like an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto about Wii Fit. Read up on every DS and Wii game that's about to be released, and see the box art. And, most importantly, download demos of upcoming Nintendo DS games, straight to your DS. Hot.
I wonder when this hits US servers. I would love to demo some DS games from my Wii, now I just have to find my power cord to my DS so that I can charge it up.

Based on disastrous Metroid sales, Nintendo has concluded that the new channel will be Nobody's Nintendo Channel, and thus cancelled in the US.
The $5 they spent on the Metroid Preview Channel just couldn't give a return on the investment. Attempting another channel is just too risky.
On the plus side, they've decided to include an annual Wii demo disc with new issues of Nintendo Power exclusively to NP subscribers for the low price of $34.99 per month in addition to the existing subscription fee.
They're finally getting a clue, thank goodness.

Actually I hear you can play most of the videos in fullscreen 16:9, and when you kick back out to the main menu, the video you're watching moves to a smaller box in the upper right hand corner.

Wait...
What the hell just happened here? Did they release a preview/demo channel?
And how the hell is $34.99 in addition to the existing subscription fee cheap? Was that sarcasm?
WTF is going on?
Title: RE: Everybody's Nintendo Channel

this channel is not released in the US yet, it sounds good.
my question is if it streams the DS demo's from nintendo's servers, how does that work?.....cause the network card in the Wii I thought could not do infastructure and ad-hoc networking at the same time, I would think you would have to download it to the wii, and then transfer it to the DS. Or maybe it does it this way but you just can't save it to the Wii.
And 35 dollars a year for nintendo power with a demo disk each month, sounds ok to me.

The DS doesn't use wifi but bluetooth for it's download play/system link (use less power that way)...

The DS Doesn't use Bluetooth at all - for local linking, it uses a proprietary version of Wi-Fi (Dubbed Ni-Fi by the hacking community). In fact, many hackers have managed to create their own DS Download Stations using their own Wi-Fi Router.

The English version of the Channel is way better than the Japanese version. Here are two things I noticed right away:
- Game pages now have a "Purchase" link. Clicking that will whisk you off to a Internet retailer listing page on the Internet Channel where you can select your favorite online retailer and buy the game right there and then through your Wii.
- You can pause and rewind/fast forward videos. Extremely useful. There are video volume level controls through the Wii Remote, too.
There's also the recommendation system and the game search, which is much better than sifting through the Wii Shop Channel. Curiously, though, not all publishers' games are listed in the index at this time. I speculate it's because they haven't signed on with (read: paid) Nintendo to put their games on the channel yet. Shouldn't be very long, though.

This is really cool, I already did a few. Is there any hope of DS titles making the list? I found the DS demo downloads to be a lot faster than public DS download stations. I'm hoping for Gauntlet and Metal Slug demos and videos of games in development, that would be cool.

Probably not being one of the pre-req is that you have to played the game over an hour and the channel scans your game save files on your Wii.

There are many videos, not just on the front page. Each game page may or may not have a gameplay video or other related videos, for example.
But on the front page... hmm...right now I count 40 videos, plus one digest video. 17 videos are third party, meaning 23 are first party. First party videos go from Wii fit and Mario Kart as far back as Animal Crossing: WW, and third party videos start at We Ski and Deca Sports, through Ghost Squad, Disney Friends, Boom Blox, Trauma cenrer 2, Hannah Montana, and more.

To fast forward and rewind you put your cursor over the video and hold down B a slider will appear and you just slide it to where you want.:)

I downloaded the channel a little while ago. I'm glad I have a US Wii and not a UK PAL one otherwise I would have to wait even longer before it was available to me. So far it looks promising. The videos do tend to stall and buffer as they are streaming but they are of OK quality. I have downloaded and tried the Ninja Gaiden and Brain Age 2 demos so far. Being able to try out DS demos is definitely a plus.

One question for those that have a somewhat weak broadband connection (512 K and the like). When you try to watch a video, does it constantly stop in order to refresh and load the rest of the footage?
While I love the channel so far I don't like how it keeps pausing, and I believe its because the internet connection is slow, and transmitting it through Wi-fi signals could weaken it even further.

It definitely does depend on your connection speed since the videos stream, I get some minor pauses since my DSL isn't the greatest.
Also has anyone noticed that Nintendo snubbed EB/Gamestop because the in the purchase option you get links to what retailer you want and these are the following retailers that the channel recommends: Sears, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Toys R Us, Target, Amazon, Best Buy and K-Mart.
And the channel also spoiled these titles for WiiWare launch next week:
- Dr. Mario Online RX (1000 points) - Lost Winds - Defend Your Castle - Critter Round-Up - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

And somehow, GoNintendo turned the Nintendo channel discussion into a "Oh noes Nintendo isn't hardcorez" argument, which they were "against". Even more funnier, even the fans who bash every article bashing the Wii are now agreeing with the guy. Double standard much?

I like how Nintendo is doing nothing to bridge the "gap" and get rid of the "Casual vs. Hardcore" bullshit by encouraging us to arbitrarily separate games by those labels while voting on them.

Nintendo is not trying to bridge the gap. Nintendo is building a wall for the casual side to protect them when the Great Flood washes the hardcore away. The hardcore will be gone, and therefore no gap.
Casual will be the new core.
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel
Post by: animecyberrat on May 08, 2008, 04:07:39 PM
It's not very fair to have to label Mario Bros. Hard core because you play it when your in a casual mood but it really is a gamer game, I still voted hard core for all of the gamer gamers and casual was reserved only for the handfull of games I know people who don't game still play regularly. What I hated was the "Who enjoys this the most" crap, I mean it's MY system naturally I am going to enjoy the games the most , it should have had the option to include more players than just 1 per game. I mean my mom enjoys Sim City as much as I do, but it is more a hard core game because there is so much to do, but I had to vote myself because I play it more.
This is no different really than those little cards they used to put in side the games where you fill in your favorite genres and list the ages of all the players in the household, except those were likely better indicators than this is. They really should have worded some things a little better.

So where will I stand (or float) after the flood. I'm just a person who likes to play fun video games.

Thats really sad. The options in spanish make some sense and don't seem so "geek" language, because lets admit it, hardcore/casual are geek terms. In spanish translating literally is like "enthusiasts" or "for everyone", actually similar to NWR rating of VC games.
I can't remember the other category well, but it was something like "ocasional play" and "intense play" or something like that.

There seems to be a limited time they are available. The demos that are there now will stay there till the 18th except a few Nintendo titles. Gamestop has been added to the available retailers where you can purchase games. Edit: changed to correct date of availability.Had the 19th.

The New DS demos are as follows The Spiderwick Chronicles, Apollo Justice:Ace Attorney, Eco-creatures, My word coach and Iron man. Oh in my previous post I said that they will be available till the 19th I meant the 18th. Each Wiiware title has a video so you can get a impression and get some game play hints as well.Out of Third Party videos I say that Mushroom men and Starwars:TFU are the standouts. Oh remember that Boogie video that "Your the one that I want" its on there.

The newest videos are up. Some include the Wiifit event,Guitar Hero 3, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2. The Wiiware titles this week and last week have videos as well. I noticed that Mushroom Men is gone. I think that this will be a problem for smaller developers trying to get attention for their titles while being overshadow by bigger developers. The DS demos have changed to the ones that were previously available.

??? Is that sarcasm I detect?
Anyways, you're completely right though Maxi. A week on the Nintendo Channel is hardly enough, especially if it costs these companies to put their stuff there. The Nintendo Channel has to be a celebration of everything Wii, and I'd MUCH prefer much more visible third party games.
It may just be the release scheduel though. Nintendo should emphasize games releasing within a month, and hopefully all of Nintendo's "let's leave Pokemon videos up there for a long time" fervor dies down a bit to make space for new releases from their partners.
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel
Post by: BeautifulShy on May 29, 2008, 03:11:24 AM
I guess that was sarcasm. Although that was not intent. I knew about the recommendations. I just didn't want to come up with something viewed as rude or anything like that. With the videos I guess we will have to keep a eye on release dates and such to determine what Nintendo and third parties do with the service. And I have to agree about the Nintendo and third party ratio. There has to be balance.

This channel is STUPID. It forces you to say whether a game is for gamers or non-gamers, and if it's "casual" or "hardcore". HELLO WHAT ABOUT BOTH, WHICH IS THE EXACT MARKET YOU'RE TARGETTING. Same goes for if it's a boys or girls game. Completely stupid.
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel
Post by: RABicle on May 30, 2008, 12:13:52 AM
UGH This channel is a complete fucking joke. I spent a good half hour going through rating everything (which by the way is tucked behind 2 or 3 menus, great fucking interface Nintendont) and then expected all the complex data I'm sending away to be used meaningfully. Fucking wrong, instead when you search for recommended games you either get EVERYTHING or NOTHING in the results/. Apparently it can't recommend me a single hardcore gamer's game for the male 19-24 year old market. Further more it gives all it's results alphabetically so no one will ever bother to scroll past 1080 Actraiser and Apollo Justice. Speaking of which, how can it recomend Apollo Justice for me (it did when I made the parameters everything) when you can't rate DS games? This is some sorta fucking crime.
And it takes up like 250 fucking blocks. I had to delete more **** just to fit this **** on my wii!

Yeah, definitely needs a "both" or "indifferent" option. I rate almost every game as for 12 year olds (funnily it complained about MP3C because 12 year olds aren't allowed to play that) because I can't meaningfully say "works for everyone". Or do they expect me to input my own age?
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel

In the US, the questions are the age and gender of the person in your household who enjoyed the game the most.
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel

Which are fairly meaningless questions unless the full spectrum of ages of both genders are represented in your household.

Not really, they're collecting data from many households and combining them.
So what? I'm the only one who plays Wii games in my household. That means every time I rate a game I'll be suggesting that it's best suited for a 21 year old male, regardless of what age/gender the game is really best suited for. That makes my vote fairly meaningless. In that regard, the quality of each household's vote is proportional to the variety of players in that household.
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel
Post by: KDR_11k on May 31, 2008, 01:32:16 AM
But your vote is only one. That way they know whether 21 year old male hardcore gamers enjoy the game. Other people provide data for other games.

You know what I hate is how they check your save data and log your games you play, this is grossly inaccurate because my stupid parents are always bringing people over to play Wii Sports, but I HATE that game and do not want them thinking that is the most played game on my system.
Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel

Title: Re: Everybody's Nintendo Channel

but that is not logged in the "Total Play Time" it only says Wii Sports "..:.." it never says "Mom Played Wii Sports for ..:.." does it?
I guess that is more a general complaint than this channel specifically though. I just never thought of it till getting the channel.

You know, when I saw the video for Strong Bad's game, I nearly crapped myself in anticipation.
I checked the shop channel, nothing.
I found it unusual how they were advertising a WiiWare title before its release. They usually release the trailer just as the title hits WiiWare.
Oh well...
