Title: It's been a year...
Post by: Dirk Temporo on November 22, 2007, 02:35:48 PM
And Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection still sucks. I mean sure, Check Mii Out, the Wii Shop channel, the Weather Channel, and all that are cool. But I don't CARE about any of that. Friend Codes are still the most unnecessarily retarded creation of all time, barely any games even have online play, and the ones that do are completely lackluster. And Friend Codes wouldn't be HALF as bad if WE COULD JUST USE OUR GODDAMN WII CONSOLE CODES UNIVERSALLY.
Yes, Nintendo. I realize you're worried about the children. But you need to realize that taking care of kids isn't your goddamn job. It's not YOUR fault if their parents are retarded.

*Puts on Nintendo fanboy mask on
"Oh look at me I am too lazy to put in some numbers! Oh waaaah!
"Friend codes ain't that bad! It prevents crappy people from invading my online games!"
"Everyone likes friend codes! Deal with it!"
*Takes Nintendo fanboy mask off
I totally agree, but what annoys me even more is that Nintendo hasn't even listened to the thousand of complains made by fans, the media and THE WHOLE WORLD!
They have the money and the talent to create a much safer, more organized security system. They CAN make a better online system. They just need to stop counting their money for a minute or two...

BUT, with friend codes my safety and security of my personal information is secure.

First off, to call Mario Strikers Charged and Battalion Wars 2 lackluster loses you any credibility at all.
Second, yes friend codes are annoying and stupid, especially with individual codes for each game, but they aren't nearly as bad as you make them out to be. And if you hate them so much why don't you just play random matches? If it matters to you that much that you play a specific person then entering 12 digits shouldn't be too much of a problem. They suck, but I doubt they'll change; Nintendo has had tons of negative feedback since the first Wi-Fi-enabled DS games which were out nearly a year before the Wii, if they were going to change because of it they would have done so by now.

It's clunky, it's not streamlined, it's not intuitive, and it's unnecessary.
I shouldn't have to put in a separate Friend Code for each game I buy. I should be able to see whenever any of my friends are playing any game at all, even one that's not online, and send them an invite to play a match with me. I should be able to select a friend and join a game that they're in. I should be able to TALK to my friends over Wi-fi.
It IS a problem, it IS hindering online play, and it IS preventing Nintendo from competing with 360 in the online gaming market.

I completely agree that having separate friend codes for each game is completely stupid and unnecessary. Once you've registered a friend, they should be your friend on *every* game with the WFC - they all use the same connection after all. They really, really need to fix this, and make a patch for every single game that uses the WFC to adjust this hindrance. A friend CODE is fine, but friend CODES are stupid.

I agree with this. If you have a friend added to your Wii friend list that means that you ALLOWED that person to be your Wii friend and agreed on playing any games online. Parents can't complain if their kids are being harassed by a pedo on the Wii since they must ALLOW it to happen.
In short, Mr. Pedo pants needs to come in before touching Little Billy's Wii.

Everything you said there is true. As I pointed out, Nintendo knows that people hate the system and they have for quite some time now. I doubt that complaining more will change Nintendo's mind at this point. On the plus side, we actually have online play this generation, and if Brawl is any indicator, Nintendo is trying to improve its online offerings.
Actually it just came to me why Nintendo likes the system the way it is. When they say friend code, they mean friend code, they don't want you to add random internet people to your list in case they're psychopaths that will abduct you and hold you prisoner in a dark damp hole in their basement because if that happened they'd lose you as a customer. So when they make it a different code for each game it leads the player to only add people they think they'll play regularly with, i.e. friends. It's purposely annoying in order to dissuade you from adding strangers to your friend list who might hurt you, which they wouldn't like because it might affect their profits.

Nintendo isn't responsible for lazy parents, only the lost profits fom the bad publicity that those lazy parents inflict on the world.

My hatred of friend codes is nothing compared to my hatred of the lack of voice chat.
Seriously, on XBL, you get the occasional assclown, but in the grand scheme of things, being able to simply tell your teammates where the flag is is so infinitely better than typing it out or not being able to tell them at all.
And if you're using friend codes, voice chat shouldn't be an issue because you added these people yourself. Plus, they've already shown us that they're willing to use it in MPH and PD&P.
I don't understand why they haven't introduced a headset that plugs into the connection port on the Wiimote and gives a passthrough port (like the lightguns do). They'd be able to sell another hojillion accessories and developers would finally be able to add voice chat to their games.

Deep down I wonder if Nintendo's usage of friend codes is merely them doing things different because of a refusal to accept anyone else's ideas as valid. If they didn't invent it they do it in a weird manner EVERY TIME. They make smaller memory cards, they do the dumbest sh!t with demo discs. It's only natural for their online plan to be goofy and screwed up for no reason. They're the last ones on board. All the good ideas were already thought of.
I think the dumb way of storing VC games is also related. Storage methods have existed since computers were invented so it's something that has already been perfected. Nintendo has to make their method unique and the only way to make a simple memory storage method unique is to make it broken and stupid.
It sounds insane but I've seen it happen with corporations and governments and of course with individuals. I'm sure there's a psychological term for refusing to adapt other people's good ideas because it suggests weakness in your ability to come up with the best idea on your own.

Making different codes for different games does the exact opposite of what you said, insanolord. It's the reason I have only put my friend code for my system and for Mario Kart DS in the appropriate threads. If I didn't have to type a different code for each game, then I'd be more likely to play against someone regularly, because it wouldn't be a freakin' hassle to do so. On a side note - I'm actually very impressed and amazed to see the amount of people playing Medal of Honor online. Hopefully a lot of people are asking for this for Christmas or something.

There should be one code per DS as everyone usually owns their own, but there should be only one friend code for every Mii, that way several people could use the same Wii but have a different friend list attached to their respective Mii's.

God willing, this will be a wake up call to Nintendo.

But like I said in my first post, Nintendo ISN'T the parent of these children, so they shouldn't feel obligated to assume the role of one.

But like somebody else said in an above post (and like my rambling half-joking post you quoted is trying to say) Nintendo isn't doing this to protect the children, they're doing this to avoid bad publicity and losing sales that would result from them being abducted (or whatever) in a way that involves the WFC.

Your posts are way more counter-productive than the point you're arguing. As for not having to input anything, well obviously you don't own any Wii online games so you don't have to. I just added 110 codes for fun while reading this thread.
insanolord said it best, and Strikers is absolutely fantastic and the best online experience i've ever had.

Yes but the experience is counterproductive. It took me 20 minutes to get the friend code inputted. first coz he got a digit wrong, then i had to chase him to get it again. Metroid Prime takes it directly from the system address book, so why shouldn't other games?
I can see the need for an extra layer of security (how do you make something "extra" secure? rinse and repeat) but the parental control system should easily limit people to add more/any friend codes without the PIN.

Except that never happens and never will happen. If it were going to, it would have happened LAST generation with Xbox Live.

Which conclusively proves you've never played a game online on a PC or 360 before.

Because it would be easier to Nintendo just to make a small patch to enable bluetooth headsets? This sure can be possible since Nintendo did include USB keyboard support so technically we could see keyboard support in games if a developer can find a way to include that into a game and get it approved by Nintendo and if EA can get away with using their own servers for online games then I'm sure a developer or publisher could convince Nintendo to allow optional keyboard support.
