Title: A year later......
Post by: Stogi on November 06, 2007, 09:20:07 AM
One year since the launch of the Wii; one year since our giddy anticipation couldn't be controlled; one year since Nintendo was officially in 3rd place (in NA): has anything changed?

Do you still have that same amount of hype for the future you had before the Wii launched?

Are you giddy with anticipation for the next couple of years?

Was the Wii less than what you expected?

The one year anniversary of the Wii launch isn't for another two weeks.  Ask me again after Mario Galaxy is released.

I'm more excited for the coming years.  I'm hoping developers get off their ass and give the Wii some decent games.

Solid platform worthy controller. Waiting for more AAA games has been the thorn in the eye. Giddy with anticipation for SMG and Kart. Not so much anything else.

Ask me in a short while when I have Mario Galaxy and Godzilla: Unleashed, and my answer will be nearly as content as can would be... although still longing for Brawl...

Rats, I was going to do this topic, but Kashogi jumped the gun. Maybe I'll post the Wii top ten so far.

You weren't the only one. I was thinking of making a "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, WII!" thread in which we posted what we were doing on launch day, swap stories and remember what it was like to discover the Wii for the first time.

The Wii makes me realizes one sad fact:

every passing day that goes by I realize I am less and less a console gamer or even a gamer in general . . . *sigh*

I never thought I'd say this, but there are too many games coming out.

Apparently Fire Emblem came out today or something.  When am I going to get to that?

I've got the best 3D Zelda, best 3D Metroid (actually, make that best Metroid period ), the best Paper Mario, a bunch of great, unique multiplayer games, and soon I will have the best Mario in 10 years and the best Smash Brothers...

I'd say that's a fantastic way to start off the first year and then some...

Perhaps I should have used the term, um, "most unique"?  There's a huge innovation gap from Mario 64/Sunshine to Galaxy just like there was going from Super Mario World to Mario 64...It has nothing to do with the quality of Mario Sunshine, because I love it too...

True, but then again it isn't nearly as innovative as Halo 3. So us Wii owners should be sad.

I wish I could be excited but my Wii is packed-up and ready to ship to Nintendo tomorrow for servicing. This means that I won't get to play Super Mario Galaxy until late next week at the earliest when my Wii is sent back to me.

My drive has been making a constant "buzzing" sound anytime a disc is spinning. It first started when I bought Guitar Hero III last week. The drive is probably going bad (I've never had any luck with slot-loading drives) so I figured I might as well contact Nintendo and get it taken care of under warranty before it expires on the 19th.

Well technically if you registered your Wii at nintendo.com you have an extra 3 months on the warranty. So make that Feb 19, 2008 for expiration of the warranty.

Psh Mario Galaxy is leaps and bounds above the quality of Sunshine.

Worst 3D mario . . . but it's still like a 9.0 in my book.

This thread is only appropriate from December 8 onward. NYEH.
A year later, the same mistakes are still happening at NOE. Shouldn't this supposed new generation mean new management? I mean the're doing it in the USA already!

It's been 12 months since they promised we could spend our stars on Wii Points. HINT?
The asinine delays on games still. In the latter part of the gamecube era it was improving (Metroid Prime 2 three days later, Mario Kart a week early) but its now worsening again. I mean, Super Paper Mario has no reason to be five months late if they couldn't be bothered to translate honor to honour!

The only plus is the amount of advertising (and quality) is improving dramatically. Since monday i've seen ads for Wii Sports, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Strikers, Wario Ware, MySims, Nintendogs, 42 ATC/Clubhouse and a general female-targeted ad from the makers of nintendogs.

But in this brave new world of non-gamers its OK, apparently, to make promises to people that quickly get pushed aside once they get their shiny new toy. Pity non-gamers goes hand in hand with non-focussed.

For whatever reason, I was under the impression that those additional 3 months extended the warranty to one year, not 15 months. That's good to know though. Thanks.

The beginning of the year was pretty rough...basically none of the games Nintendo promised made it out.

Other than that, I'm really happy.  I love the controller, and there are at least 10 games I would like to buy in this last quarter of 07, I really can't ask for more than that, I don't have time!

A year later, I still love the console, but it doesn't really have THAT game on it yet. You know, THAT game, the game which you can just turn the Wii on and everyone assumes we'll be playing it.

It might be SSBB, but we'll see.

I am very hopeful for the next year of Wii titles.  The thing that has given me the most hope is the preview of Pro Evolution Soccer for Wii.  When I first learned about the controls the Wii would be utilizing, I imagined ways it could be used in any types of games.  When I thought of sports games, I thought of controlling the player's movement with the nunchuk and controlling the aiming of a pass with the wii remote's pointing ability.  Pro Evolution Soccer is the first thing I've seen that uses something close to that, and it looks amazing.  If you haven't seen the preview video for the Wii controls in that game, you should check it out (I can't link to it now since I'm at work and most video sites are blocked).  This gives me hope that some games will be pushing the innovative control system side of the Wii which is quite necessary for the Wii to have as big an impact as it should on console gaming.

Did they repair your Wii or send you a brand-new one? I opted to send it in for repair because I didn't want to lose any of my Virtual Console games. Also, I find it complete bullsh*t that some game save data is forbidden from being backed-up to an SD card (ie. Guitar Hero III and most VC save fiels).

"Do you still have that same amount of hype for the future you had before the Wii launched?"

I had very little hype before so obviously I have more now.

"Are you giddy with anticipation for the next couple of years?"

Only moderately so.  I'm looking forward to the first party games but literally nothing else.  They can sell all the Wii's they want but so far the lineup has still been on a game every couple months basis comparable to the N64 and Gamecube.  For me anyway.

"Was the Wii less than what you expected?"

Considering I thought the Wii was a complete joke the first time the remote was revealed the Wii is WAY more than I expected by actually lasting a whole year without being in the bargain bin.  That fact that it's number one is insane.

I eagerly await Super Mario Galaxy but my birthday is December 1 so I put it on my birthday/Christmas list.  It's good because then someone else can pay for it but it sucks because I have to WAIT LONGER.  ARRRGGH!!!

"I've got the best 3D Zelda"

Best 3D Zelda?  Did you buy Ocarina of Time on the VC?  Okay I actually think Majora's Mask is the best but then my joke doesn't work.

And I think Super Mario Sunshine was plenty innovative.  It's just that the innovation was lame as hell.

I'm going to hate admitting this...but I never beat Super Mario Sunshine.  I plan to remedy that this week before Galaxy.  I bought Sunshine on the day it was released, but I was buying 3 to 5 games at a time.

Back to topic:  My brother and I went to 5 different Targets at 3 o'clock in the morning after our bouncing gig right before it was released.  We bought 2 Wii's...and it was well worth the sleep deprivation and hunger.

I had it repaired because of my VC games and it came back in exactly 7 days and that includes a weekend I was so happy that I went and got Guitar Hero the same day it came back

I have no idea why they wouldn't be. Not only is there a lack of RPG's, but Golden Sun is equal to money. If you make Golden Sun, you make money.

Plus, the Wii is absolutely ideal. At first, I thought the DS would be the system to have the next Golden Sun, but it's clear now; the Wii has the potential to make the most interactive RPG ever (and truly blow all others out of the water).

As for how the Wii is doing the third party situation has improved from last year.Although last year was good, this year is better.2009 looks even better.

The Rpg and fighting genres have improved a little from last year.

If Camelot wanted to make another Golden Sun they would.  It certainly isn't Nintendo or lack of advertising that is stopping them.  They walked away from the Shining series (including my favorite games: Shining Force) and never looked back.  A company not owned by Nintendo can do what it wants and that is not always what fans and others want.

That's completely fine, but don't walk away from what your good at.

If they don't want to make Golden Sun, that's fine. But walking away from RPG's altogether?

I'm sure Nintendo would love to fund a new RPG project exclusive to the Wii.

There have been several interviews with the Takahashi brothers that stated that Nintendo HAS asked them to make a new Golden Sun, and they said that they'd love to...eventually...Camelot has just been lazy... =(

RPGs, though they have been pretty severely lacking on all consoles this generation...

GOOD FPSers are also a rarity, which is ridiculous considering how well the genre fits on Wii...

I think there are plenty of decent fighting games out for Wii at the moment and in the near future (Naruto, Guilty Gear, Capcom VS Tatsunoko, Treasure's Bleach game, Castlevania, and of course, Smash Brothers)...

wheres my (and Icecoldes) f-zero!

Well if you want the same people who made GX to make it you'll have to wait awhile.  Amusement Vision is busy working on Yakuza 3 for the PS3 and wont be done with that game until at least 2009 or maybe even latter.

Of course Nintendo themselves could make it if they get the X team together.  That could always be possible since the Director of Fzero X, Tadashi Sugiyama is in charge of EAD 5 and the last game they made was Wii Fit last year.

Everyone has to remember that Wii Fit came out in December 2007 in Japan, so EAD 5 has to have been working on something for almost a year now.  Maybe there's a chance it might be F-Zero, or maybe not. :-\

Not really...We heard about MS moneyhatting those games back around the start of the generation...What with the lengthy development cycle for RPGs and all...

(I really, REALLY doubt we'll see many more exclusive 360 JRPGs, personally...It's just not cost-effective at all for developers...)

If they're getting moneyhats, I don't think they care.  Microsoft is paying away the risk for them, essentially.  I don't think it's entirely moneyhats, either...you would think that some brave souls would choose to fill an empty niche in the 360's library, much like High Voltage with Conduit on Wii.  In the beginning, certainly there were moneyhats, but now I'm not entirely sure.  Franchises that are popular in Japan sell decently on the 360, as isolated as those cases are.

The thing is, I don't think MS is going to keep throwing money into a bottomless pit, but who knows?

Oh there are definitely certain genres on the 360 that Japanese developers have chosen, no doubt about that...ADVs and SHMUPs are a popular thing to make for 360 in Japan these days...Except these games have a much smaller budget than a big RPG, and there really aren't too many (non-moneyhatted) RPGs that can make up for the cost of development when sales are so sparse...Which is probably why we are starting to see more multiplatform RPGs on the horizon (Last Remnant, FFXIII)...
