Title: So, I just finished the book Starship Troopers...
Post by: Sir_Stabbalot on November 04, 2007, 08:51:05 AM
Alright, why didn't someone tell me to pick this up earlier?
It's almost everything I ever wanted in sci-fi. A basis in reality and fact, along with background that makes the world believable. Political undertones that really do make you think for a second. What really is the meaning of rights and duties? And last but most certainly not the least, power armor. I can't believe I had missed it for so long...
And I swear, if one of you so much as mentions the horrid film adaptation, you'll leave with several broken ribs.

Never read it, but I've heard it's pro-fascist propaganda.

It's very much pro-military, but not necessarily Fascism. The Terran Federation in the book allows only veterans to vote, but it's still a democratic government.
Personally, I view it as at least partially satirical.

I read Starship Troopers in 2005 and hated the book. HATED IT!

I could ask why you disliked it in an intellectual manner, but instead I'll resort to immaturely calling you an illiterate monkey.

I will find where you sleep and murder you for mentioning that abomination.

I'll see if I can find that somewhere.
Now, besides that, Armor, Dune and Forever War, what Sci-Fi books have I missed?

I didn't read the book, the movie was much better because it had nudity.

I haven't seen the whole series (I just have a few of the VHS tapes they released), but I was very pleased with them. Someday, I should get around to buying the DVD set.

I didn''t read the book until after I watched ( and enjoyed) the movie, but yeah, I really enjoyed it, as did my younger brother, and we really took to considering a lot of the ideas involved. Let's not let this get too political, but the book isn't about fascism, it's about the relationship between citizens and their country/state/nation. The movie is actually about fascism(a quote from the director's and screenwriter's commentrary: "War makes us all a little fascist"), but then again the movie was a delightfully satirical and unfaithful take on the themes in the book.

Very well put.

Mainly it was because I found the book boring.
I was expecting something better than what I read, and I was looking forward to it when the owner of the bookstore I bought it from told me it was a lot better than the movie. For me, the movie which is no great piece of film, is better than the book.
The themes of the story didn't bother me, it was just that it was boring and I kept waiting for the story to take off and it never did.

Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles is a 1999 mid to low budget animated children's tv show. Because of that it does not have as much of the politics, the book has. They also went for a ultra realistic graphics and the show has not aged to well in that regard. Also the show ended with a cliffhanger. It's the best version of Starship Troopers in a video format, but don't expect a lot, because the show was limited. Overall they did the best with what they had to work with.

Well, that's understandable.

Yeah, the book is actually VERY internal and the character describing experiences and their thoughts on it. It's sort of like how Dune and it's sequels are very internalized, not so much fast-paced sci-fi action as inward responses to a series of external events. I guess in many ways Starship Troopers the book reads like a sort of journal or diary of sorts.
