It's almost everything I ever wanted in sci-fi. A basis in reality and fact, along with background that makes the world believable. Political undertones that really do make you think for a second. What really is the meaning of rights and duties? And last but most certainly not the least, power armor. I can't believe I had missed it for so long...
And I swear, if one of you so much as mentions the horrid film adaptation, you'll leave with several broken ribs.

It's very much pro-military, but not necessarily Fascism. The Terran Federation in the book allows only veterans to vote, but it's still a democratic government.
Personally, I view it as at least partially satirical.

I haven't seen the whole series (I just have a few of the VHS tapes they released), but I was very pleased with them. Someday, I should get around to buying the DVD set.

Mainly it was because I found the book boring.
I was expecting something better than what I read, and I was looking forward to it when the owner of the bookstore I bought it from told me it was a lot better than the movie. For me, the movie which is no great piece of film, is better than the book.
The themes of the story didn't bother me, it was just that it was boring and I kept waiting for the story to take off and it never did.
