Since I already consider Mega Man as playable, here's my Megaton: 1. Simon Belmont to complete the Captain N team (other Belmonts as costumes would be nice) 2. Palutena playable 3. Voice-chat for online multiplayer 4. Costumes with customizable attire 5. Character creation mode 6. Boss rush mode
I'll hope though I don't see a single one of those things happening. If one or more of them did, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Anything that was never expected, speculated or hinted at. Most of these things have either been suggested or speculated, and many of them are sure things so for an update to surprise me it would have to be something that you would never expect in an SSB game.

Playable Master Chief. I don't want it, but I believe the spirit of Megaton is something that would sell systems, and that would for sure.
Personally, that little guy from Katamari Damacy would rock my world. That would be my personal "Megaton"

Didn't we discuss a Bowser stage before?
In any case, the Bowser stage needs to include the Koopa Clown Car somehow. I was really hoping that it'd be Bowser's match entrance intro thing.

There wasn't much evidence of Sonic besides the Olympics game thing and I'm not sure that even counts as evidence. It was just more obvious than anything.
Also, I'd love to see Viewtiful Joe.... but Mega Man still seems far more likely.

No sense predicting "megaton" updates, because the real megaton updates are the ones that no one predicts. The stage editor, for instance, was something that hadn't even crossed my mind; hence, shock and disbelief when that update hit.

Megaton Brawl Updates for me:
New Characters Available by Download to SD Card Mega Man Playable Bomber Man Playable Voice Chat Added DS Compatiability and DS game being created Classic Controller Bundled in game/or even another Wiimote bundled in game. An Announcement saying 50 characters (including hidden characters) are available in the game. Costumes that give slightly different attributes to the characters (Kinda like clones, but better) Gannondorf that can turn into Ganon as a final Smash and stay that way. Music Downloads so that the game can always have the most modern Nintendo Music to play Savable on the SD Card.
Finally the big one: Nintendo shipping this game with a hard drive and a new firmware update.

I am agreeing with darkheart here.
Sora would be an absolute megaton with me.
Sora AND Roxas would be even better, but then the clone babies would cry.
Whatever. I guess they could do an alternate costume form of Sora that is Roxas. That would rock too.

Heck I can see Nintendo doing it then presenting it to Capcom for approval with out asking.

IGN's comment on their latest "Smash it up!" feature about more third parties joining the Brawl made me realize something.
A megaton update for me would be a completely unexpected third party joining the Brawl.
Capcom, Namco, Hudson and Square are pretty much in considering their relationship with Nintendo and the fact that fans want their characters in Brawl.
However, what other third parties are left? That's where the megaton updates lies...
Let's see, to me the surprising three would be...
- SNK: They are supporting Nintendo like crazy now, with Metal Slug Anthology being a launch title for the Wii, the Wii shop featuring Neo Geo games for sales, the DS games (including the infamous witch touching game) and the upcoming anthology games.
- Tecmo: Their support isn't as big as SNK's but its certainly there. Super Swing Golf was a launch title and a sequel is in the works, a Fatal Frame game was announced a while back (its done by Tecmo, right?), the Ninja Gaiden games are available on the VC and of course a Ninja Gaiden DS game is coming soon. I think they will either use Ryu Hayabusa or one of their Super Swing Golf games.
- Ubisoft: To be honest, the rumor about Ubi submitting four characters (Rayman, Jade, Sam Fisher and the Prince) for Brawl approval is so old that I think its not true. However, it would be very megaton if one morning we see Rayman's profile up along with a trailer featuring the Rabbids as assist trophies.
So in short, a surprising third party joining the brawl would be pretty megaton.

What Bill said. Megaman and Geno are on both Sakurai's list and on the Japanese poll so Capcom and Square are going to be represented. I agree that Namco and Hudson may or may not happen but you never know. I don't see them adding more than 5 third party characters but there won't be less than 3.

I remember getting verbally mauled in the face after suggesting that last year. "But Sakurai said...." Anything could happen.
I'd love to see Rayman or Ryu Hayabusa though if Snake's fake neck-snap move was a problem for some people, imagine what Hayabusa would bring to Brawl. Almost every move he has involves dismembered limbs. Also, if any Ryu makes it, I'd bet on that guy from Street Fighter.

Yeah, Hayabusa's a VERY M-rated character. However, they could base the character off the old NES games or the new DS game.
The Rygar guy could also work, unless he too is extremely violent.

If they weren't willing to base Pit on his 8-bit games (and thank goodness they didn't due to his current awesomeness), I doubt they'd do so with Ryu Hayabusa. Sakurai's team seems to be basing characters on their latest outings anyway (i.e. Link and Fox). Like you said, they could base him off the DS game, Dragon Sword, though by extension, that's just basing him on the 3D Ninja Gaiden titles since the DS game takes place between the original NG on Xbox and its upcoming sequel on 360.

I think it's the magnitude of the announcement which makes such a huge difference.
"Pleasantly surprised" and "WHOAMG!!11" are two very different things.
There are a lot of characters I like but would never expect to see them in SSBB: Alex Roivas, Phoenix Wright, John Raimi, Leon Kennedy, Zack & Wiki (would make a cool combo character), etc.
I think "Megaton" needs to be something you didn't expect and it happened.
Honestly, Sonic was a megaton for me because his inclusion was so obvious that I expected Sega to be the idiots that they usually are and not do it.

Well, technically, Sonic was unveiled at a Nintendo media event in Japan. I expected Sonic; it was the the timing was a surprise due to its randomness. I suppose Sonic was coupled with the announcement of the delay to soften the blow. At the same time, Nintendo never softens delays. Nintendo said nothing after Miyamoto's "if [Galaxy is] not a launch title it will definitely be there within the first six months" statement fell through. I'm not complaining. I'll take a better game any day.

A MEGATON is an announcement that sells games and/or systems. Most of these don't qualify for that because they're not going to get anyone interested in Brawl (or Wii in general) who wasn't already planning on buying it. It doesn't matter how surprising it is or how much you want it to happen; the only thing that matters is that it expands the user base of Brawl and/or Wii.

To be fair, this thread was asking what everyone's personal megaton would be. I agree, for the most part, with your definition of megaton. So far, besides the announcement of the game itself, the only "megaton" announcements have been Sonic and Snake since their inclusion opens the game up to fans of those characters.

I too once thought that we'd only get one or two third-party characters MAX but that expectation was blown away with the inclusion of a third-party trophy character, Saki Amamiya from Sin and Punishment, as well as Sakurai's attached quote: "There were many requests from users for his inclusion, and he IS pretty cool, so I did what I could to include him. After all, this game does let you enjoy a dream cast of supporting characters!" .
I think popular characters from Nintend-friendly developers like Capcom, Namco, and even Square are a sure bet. If not as playable characters then AT LEAST as assist trophies.
I'm going to make a prediction right now. Playable: Megaman. Pacman. Moogle. Assist Trophies: Viewftiful Joe, Chrono, Dracula.

- Luigi - Bowser Jr./Shadow Mario (Changes like Zelda in SSBM) - Baby Mario & Luigi - Geno - Young Link (Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass version, is not a clone of default Link) - Wolf Link & Midna - Ganondorf (Has own moveset, is not a clone) - Shiek (Seperate character from Zelda) - Vaati - Mewtwo - Pokemon Rival (Turtwig, Croconaw and Blaziken) - Lucario - Jigglypuff - Zero Suit Samus (Unlocked to be selected apart from Samus) - Ridley - Falco (Has own moveset, is not a clone) - Krystal - Ness (Has own moveset, is not a clone) - Animal Crosser - Marth - Roy - K.Rool - Black Shadow - Sukapon - Mr. Game & Watch - Takamaru - Ray 01 - Andy - Mii (Looks like your Mii! Weight and size differ, but attacks are always same)
How dare you throw Vaati in the list, rumour jerk!? My favorite Zelda villain ever doesn't have a lick of a chance at being in!

Well this week Famitsu is suppose to have a review of the game. This means there is people in Japan that have gotten to play the final version so I'd imagine a final roaster leak could happen this week. And I mean a real one, where someone actually takes a picture of the final screen. If someone had the resources to get a final copy of the game, they should also have the resources to at least take a picture of the damn thing.

Well I doubt any major publications will show it. I'm talking about someone that might work for Famitsu could always take a picture, and then maybe he gives it to a friend of his, who then gives it to another friend who then puts the image online, in which someone at 2chan finds this image and post it and then all hell breaks lose.
