Gsmestops around here mentioned a midnight launch.

Is Walmart going to be selling it at midnight? *Paging Unclebob to electronics.*

SUNDAY sunday SUNDAY!

This Sunday you will probably not have to line up for GHIII.

We're selling it at midnight.  We got in 60 PS2 Bundles.

Only 6 Wii Bundles though.  I would recommend getting there at Midnight for the Wii version.  That's just me though.

My Walmart is also starting at Midnight. I have no idea about how many Wii versions they have. I'm thinking about showing up an hour early.

Well, who got it?  I'm absolutely horrible at it, but I want to try the online mode.

Strong Bad Email'd!

Heh, I amuse myself.

I would actually contribute to this topic, but it seems I'm a bit late to do that.

Sometimes I line up for the latest chicken sandwich at the chicken sandwich store in chicken sandwich land. Three hundred years in advance. Sick beats.

I couldn't hold out for the Wii version, I got the 360 version a couple days ago. I already have 2 guitars anyway.

Is Activision really afraid of RockBand or has this always been in GH manuals?

Quote

They can't even really do that, can they?

Next time I turn the game on I'll post my friend code so we can jam. I'm playing through on easy right now.

I was at Target earlier, and wanted to see if they had any copies of the Wii version.  When I got there, the lone sales associate in the electronics section was standing with his head in his hands trying to explain to three mothers that they had no copies of the game left.  I felt kind of bad for him.  It's still October and parents are already clamoring to get their kids gifts.

Funny, i walked into the Target by my school. THey had three copies for the Wii, and at least three of the PS3, 360 and PS2 versions. At best buy right near by, probably 40+ copies of the Wii version.

I'm ready to rock for those who are looking for someone to add.

I like that this game keeps you sign in online all the time after you initially choose to do so.  Now you can play without waiting in the lobby.  (at least it seems that way)

I'm curious about the same thing.  Player 2 rocking on just a Wiimote isn't exactly a fun time.

GHIII is my first GH outing and I am loving this game so far!

I've always had a thing for rhythm games and so far this lives up to the praise the series has gotten.

Any word on how the Wii version of GH III is doing? I'm sure the 360 version will come out on top but I am hoping the Wii version comes at second, despite friend codes and locked online content.

Since you work at a Wal mart any word on how the game is doing?

I bought it at Target last night, and I asked the clerk at electronics about it.  He said they got mostly 360 and Wii versions in, and both sold very well.  He also mentioned the PS3 version didn't sell well, but that they didn't get too many of those in.

I'm up to hard mode, which I don't think is very shabby.  My roommate and I have probably played it a total of five or six hours, and last night we went all the way through easy alternating, then played some quickplay songs.  He went on to play them in normal, and I moved up to hard, skipping medium.  Of course, I lost a ton, but I'm finally able to make it through a few of the songs.  Of course, I haven't tried a majority of them on hard, though.

The midnight launch I went to had mostly 360 sales, then Wii, and one each of PS2 and PS3. It was a small group, mostly young guys. Once the casual crowd comes in though I bet the PS2 picks up steam.

According to Amazon's sales charts GH III Wii is doing VERY well. You can read about it here.. Like one of the comments state, though, this is just Amazon.

Also, GH III Wii now appears as "Back ordered" on Gamestop's website. Don't know if this means anything, but some think its good news...

Have you guys seen 1up's review? They said the Wii version didn't have online play in it twice. They're usually pretty tough on the Wii, but this is the first time I've seen them outright lie to put down the Wii.

I emailed the reviewer about that mistake.  Makes you wonder if he even thoroughly checked out the Wii version.  All it would take is a look at the front end menus to see that it's online I'd assume.

I thought that might have been the case as well, but the review specifically mentioned the Wii version guitar and that you should turn off the rumble because of a problem caused by the rumble from activating Star Power.

Well from playing through career on easy mode I can say that there have been no sound problems that I haven encountered thus far.

The Wiimote speaker actually does a nice job for making a "missed" notes noise and the music sounds perfect.

As for it being online all it takes is looking at THE FREAKING BOX to notice it's online. There's a big "Wi-Fi" blue circle logo thing right on it. Oh and yes there's a wi-fi mode right on the front game menu.

The ONLY issue I had so far was with the guitar once. The wammy board stopped working. It took me turning off the system and turning it back on to get it going again for some reason. Haven't been able to reproduce the problem.

"The game modes are essentially the same: solo or co-op Career and Quick Play -- and if you have a 360 or PS3, online play. (Ed. note: The Wii version has online play as well.)"

LOL

My whammy bar had stopped working once, took a restart to fix. I wonder if I had moved the bar from the default location when turning it on??

Also, with online play I had to sessions where my Wii locked up in the middle of the game and one that finished without a problem. And it must have been a glitch but I was able to choose 'co-op' from ranked play the first time I played online, but haven't been able to since. Not that ranked play matters if my Wii is just going to lock up.
Title: RE:Guitar Hero Launch Day?
Post by: darknight06 on October 31, 2007, 05:40:21 AM
If the whammy bar doesn't work immediately, the quickest thing to do is to just go to the in game Wii Menu and reconnect the controller.  That always fixed it for me.

Now at first I thought the sound was screwy until I played online and realized what they did with the rear speaker, they're reserved for player 2.  Even with that known, it would've been nice to get full surround even in single player.  Is it me, or do the characters and environments seem to miss the mark that the first 2 really nailed.  It's still good and all, but it's not Harmonix good.

Just played a little more, I think I know what they're talking about when it comes to sound issues.  Anyone else run into a problem where the music stops and the note don't scroll momentarily?  When the music does start up, every note between the part where it stopped and started again counts as a miss.  While it doesn't happen often at all (only twice) it still sort of reeks of careless development IMO.  It's no gamebreaker, but still slightly disappointing nonetheless.

Edit:  What I was talking about earlier isn't the sound problem, the PS2 version apparently has the full Dolby ProLogic II support that MAGICALLY got screwed up in the Wii version.  (*chuckles* even though on the main channel menu the music there is completely PLII)  It's not making me want to trade it in, but if third parties are still wondering why their games supposedly don't sell as well on the Wii while churning out bug ridden and half assed ports they need to be dragged out in the street and shot!

So last night, I finally decided to try out the Guitar Hero 3 on-line multiplayer via Nintendo WFC. I played a random stranger. Now since I basically such at GH, I selected "easy". Now this is where my rant comes in...This scumbag was obviously an "expert", hitting 99% on every song we played (I average around 90%). Why do people do this? I know they are looking for an easy way to move up the leaderboards, but still - it's not right. I got my ass handed to me by someone who was too good to be bothering with someone on "easy" difficulty.

That's why I stopped playing those free Yahoo games.  I'm an advanced-beginner chess player, but I was always playing against people who were really really good, and could beat me in like 12 moves.  When I compete, I like the playing field to be even, that way I feel like I've actually accomplished something.

Anyway, back to Guitar Hero, it turns out someone on my floor has this game, so I've been playing it a little bit.  I've never played a GH game before, and I could get 5 stars on Medium by Tuesday.  Yesterday, I got my first 100% on Medium with the Weezer song.  No one believes me that I've never played it before!

Post by: darknight06 on November 01, 2007, 06:04:51 AM
At one point in time I was 99% on Easy charts and failing Medium, I wouldn't go saying they're outright experts.  Are you using star power and getting decent streaks at least to the point where you can get an 8x multiplier.  It's not your percentage that wins this game, it's your ending score.  I've hit 99% of the notes on songs and lost to people with 96 and 95% notes simply because of the score differential.  Learning the charts well enough to know when you can use star power to really rake in points is a key factor in winning online battles.

It's funny to see all the conversation about GH on here. I remember going through all of this stuff the first time I played too. Once you blast through medium, hard won't seem too bad. About half way through hard you should move into expert and get your feet wet. Start playing both hard and expert in unison and by the time you finish hard, you should be well prepared to rip expert. It's a fun voyage getting up to expert, enjoy the ride. I'll be eventually picking this up on the 360 since I already have the hardware from GH2. I burned myself out on GH between 1 and 2. Time for me to take a break for a little while, I tend to get addicted to playing it.

I agree 100%.  I haven't failed a medium song yet (only played about 4), but my notes hit goes from the mid-nineties to the seventies.

When do they add the fifth fret--hard or expert?

Also, I can already tell I'm going to have a devilish time once they add that fifth fret.  My concern is that I'm not going to be able to unlock all the songs/extras because I'll run out of money.  It seems that you don't get paid twice for completing a song on the same difficulty more than once.  Does this mean I'm eventually going to run out of cash once I hit a brick wall in the career mode, or is there another way of earning money?

They add the fifth fret in Hard and then make the patterns more complicated in Expert. You will eventually run out of money and be required to earn more money by getting a higher number of stars on the songs. 5 stars will net you the max amount of available cash from the song. If you beat a song and get 3 stars, when you beat the same song again and get 5 stars, earned money on the song = 5 star money value - 3 star money value.

So on any given song lets say 3 stars is worth $300 and 4 stars is worth $400 and 5 stars is worth $500.
The first time you beat the song you get 3 stars and earn $300.
The second time you beat the song you get 5 stars, so you will earn $500 minus the $300 you already made earning you another $200.
Now that you have 5 stars move on to a new song because you can no longer earn money from the song.

I still can't nail the whole 'strum once hit notes' technique.

I did it in practice mode but in the actual game I never seem to pull it off.

Oh well practice makes perfect.

Thanks for the info!  That makes a lot of sense.  Does anyone know if you're able to unlock everything just beating the easy and normal songs (with 5-star ratings)?  Or am I going to have to begin to prioritize my purchases?  Also, do you earn cash from beating bonus songs?

As long as GH3 is the same as 1 and 2, I'm assuming it is, you can unlock everything by playing in lower settings. Also you do not earn cash from the bonus songs. You still might want to prioritize your purchases. IMHO it is a better idea to unlock songs first and go for the other goodies after.

Tom Morello is in this one as a playable character!!! I take it all back, Tom Morello is awesome, buy him before all songs. Same goes for the rest of you!

Man, did it take forever to beat Tom Morello on medium.

I eventually was able to pick up every attack as they came and  started nailing him once per session after I built up three in the queue. By the end he was hurtin' and he wasn't able to use the power drain.

I usually am able to pull off the hammer-on and pull-off technique, except when there are a ton of notes flying down and I lose track where I am.

I really enjoy this game, love the fact that the original artists are on it, and the selection of songs ain't that bad.

Them making a point not to give a "no" answer is makes me hope that Nintendo has a storage solution in the works and they know it but aren't allowed to say anything. Maybe. Come on Nintendo, I want to give you my money for more VC games! Give me the space for them and you can have it!

Nintendo already has a storage solution - SD cards. Right now though, the SD card slot is just a waste of space. The official status of GH3 DLC for the Wii is "TBA". It was never ruled out, but at this point there is only a 50/50 chance of it ever happening. It really all depends on what Nintendo is willing to allow developers and publishers to do with DLC on the Wii.

Nintendo WFC is an archaic, backwards service. Requiring friend codes for each game that you want to play with your friends is redundant. It completely undermines the purpose of having a code for the Wii itself. I'm under the impression that we will not get the DLC because of Nintendo's stubbornness to implement a friendlier on-line atmosphere.

As far as DLC goes, right now it's a "No."  I think the DLC isn't truly a Nintendo "elephant in the way"-type of problem, but more along the lines of "Hey, we could spend a few weeks creating a DLC system that matches the middleware we've got to work with, but what if no Wiiers buy the game?"  Once we see Activision and RedOctane's reactions to the sales numbers, we'll probably be told a definitive answer to whether or not it will be done.  I think the game sold well enough to be a "Yes," personally, but that's solely my opinion.

I've moved onto Medium and I'm starting to get pretty decent.  I just kicked Tom Morello's ass.

Is it better to hit the blue note with your pinkie finger or is it better to just shift your hand down a notch?  I'm currently playing with my pinkie, but when (if) I move up to Hard it seems like I'm going to have to get used to shifting my hand to hit the orange note, so it might be best to get used to it now.  How do most people play?

Lol yeah that's my problem Vudu but to a worse extent. It's getting very hard for me to constantly use my pinky without forgetting to hit the blue notes. If I shift my hand to hit the blue notes however I occasionally mess up my hand position and start hitting the wrong keys screwing up even worse X_X.

By the time you move up to hard/expert you are going to need to do both. I would try changing it up from time to time, hit some with the pinky, and shift other times.
