Title: Whats worth watching on DVD.
Post by: Freyr on October 24, 2007, 10:45:09 PM
I don't know if anybody else on here uses netflix or a service like it. Even if you don't what are good things you seen that are on DVD, that are worth looking at. I'll post a few that I have watched that I liked.
Shows Babylon 5 (Seasons 1-5) Dead like Me ( Seasons 1-2) Firefly Heroes (Season 1 / 2 not out) Rome (Seasons 1-2) The Shield(Seasons 1-5, 6-7 not out) The Wire (Seasons 1-3 / 4-5 not out)
Movies V for Vendetta Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Mini Series Band of Brothers

Firefly is worth, then watch Serenity to cap if off. I also liked the first season of Dead Like Me, still have to watch the second.
Might I also suggest Super Natural? Great show that I think gets overlooked by a lot of people.

I'll throw my vote on Firefly and Supernatural as well. I actually miss having tv mostly for Supernatural (and now, Heroes and Lost).
Also The Office (British or American version, both are good, for slightly different reasons).
I just started watching Lost on DVD. I can't believe I never got on the bandwagon before now, but it's great. I'm partway through Season 2 right now, and I've been very impressed with the storytelling, character development and the unexpected twists and turns. Great effects for the most part too. I've heard it said before, but it's true: it's the most "movie-like" tv show I've ever seen.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
On a side note, Pushing Daisies is the best new TV show of the year. It's not on DVD though.

Own Serenity Watch the second season of "Dead Like Me", It was really good, the episode dealing with Rube's past is one of the best in the series. Very Sad Also they are by the looks of it bring out several direct to DVD movies and sequels, personally just give me another season of the show, but this will have to work.
Added the first two disks of Super Natural Season 1 To my queue, sounds intriguing.

The office just did not mash well with me. I can see why people would like it, but it just did nothing for me. Added The first two disks of lost to my queue. Heard as it goes on the later season degrade in goodness, but i'll give it a shot. I would guess you still have a tv considering you play videogame, so why don't you uses a pair of bunny ears to watch it over the air.

Added Eternal Sunshine to my queue and Pushing Daisies to my saved(and VCR) Second one looks really interesting.

Is it just me or does fox get in the frame of mind to kill a show, before it even airs.

Wonderfalls is a very underrated show that got axed by Fox (surprise!) after only like 3 episodes aired. Luckily, the entire season was finished and tells a fairly complete story. I highly, highly recommend this show. Its cancellation single-handedly made me stop watching television since every show I enjoy gets canceled. Like Futurama... which luckily got renewed!
The 1966 adaptation of Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is excellent. More people need to enjoy that film.

I just looked up some backround on that show on wikipedia. Man fox hated that show even worse then firefly.... Aired only four episodes, out of order at that and changed the time it was on. That is a one two three punch there. I added the first disk to my queue.
I think we have all learned fox hates good shows...

I'd like to quantify this by specifying the first season only; the rest are crap.

I'd like to quantify this by specifying the first season only; the rest are crap.
eh disagree
the second and third seasons are broader and more linear but they're still brilliant
Quote Also The Office (British or American version, both are good, for slightly different reasons).
hate the american version, mainly because they took my favorite character (Gareth) and turned him into Dwight
hate Dwight
also, the american version isn't nearly as funny

I'd also like to disagree here, great from beginning to end, no qualifiers necessary.

The only Arrested Development episode I would ever consider "terrible" is the one with Martin Short. Ugh..
But I've disagreed with vudu before about this, and I will again here - the second season is great. The beginning of the third (the whole Charlize Theron story) was weak, but it ended brilliantly.

BI-WEEKLY UPDATE:
Previously Recommended Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is on it's way from netflix. Wonderfalls is really good, no wonder fox killed it The third and final disk is at my house waiting for me to watch it. Me want season 2 Currently 5/5 stars
Supernatural Normal I don't like any type of horror shows/movies, but this is good, Currently need disk 2 of season 1. More about it after I watch some more.
Stuff I Picked The Lost Battalion This is a very good world war 1 based movie. If you liked Band of Brothers, try this one. 5/5 stars
Robin Hood watched the first disk and it's really good also. Was really surprised, it could have been terrible. More about it after I watch some more.
Space: Above and Beyond Could barely get thru the first disk. This show has not aged well in anyway. From the acting to the special effects it's just one big meh. 1/5 stars
Transformers This move is crap, I hope Michael Bay is on strike with the other movie/tv people and he never comes back. I just don't know whats the worst part of the movie. Corny dialog, how he frames stuff in camera, the plot or the characters trying to be funny and just failing. 1/5 stars

Agreed this movie totally sucked and should be banished from the history of film. Nonexistent plot, crappy 1 dimensional characters, not nearly enough Transformers, and flat out too long and boring. This movie is just awful, it's terribleness is only increased due to the sheer number of people who told me it was great.

Luckily you guys are in the VAST minority, so that makes me happy.

If you thought that this was good, then you're sure to love Hayao Miyazaki's other movies. Actually, I don't like his Nausicaa movie because it was made when the manga was only about a quarter done, so it ends quickly and without digging real deep into all the themes it touches on, unlike the manga which went on far past the movie...
But ANYWAYS, have you checked out Miyazaki's other movies, like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, or the family-friendly children's classic My Neighbor Totoro?
BTW, I'm not posting my netflix list here because it's about 300 movies long... but right now I'm just digging through a whole lot of nice non-brain-taxing I Dream of Jeannie... eheh...

I watched "Howl's Moving Castle", "Castle in the Sky" and "My Neighbor Totoro". They were all good imho. Just added "Spirited Away" to my queue. Need to see if I can find a copy of the manga for Nausicaa.
There was a funny video a fan did of the Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Ring. They took the fight at the end and recut it so it looked like it was done by Michael Bay.

Anyone here into foreign movies? I've found Netflix to be a great boon for foreign language films.
I mean, most people know about Downfall, but I also enjoyed other german-language films like Nowhere in Africa, and the romantic comedy Mostly Martha (which got remade in America with Catherine Zeta Jonesa and Aaron Eckhart as "No Reservations").
... Nowhere in Africa is a bit heavy since it's based on a true story of growing up in exile in Africa during WW2, but I really just wanted to recommend Mostly Martha, hehe.
