Title: A rant against Nutritional Facts...
Post by: Bill Aurion on September 18, 2007, 02:26:09 PM
What are with Nutritional Facts and their pitiful attempt on an estimation of a "single serving"? I just had a tuna sandwich for dinner and just happened to glance at the side of the can while I was toasting my bread, and what do I find? Serving size: 2.5 Seriously? 2.5 servings? Where the hell did that .5 come from? Wait, before that, how the hell are there even 2 servings in a small can of tuna in the first place!? A cat can eat a whole can of tuna! Does the tuna manufacturer think that the average person will take a forkful of tuna, then go "Oh, well that's enough" and stash it in the fridge? What will happen when they reach that ominous .5 serving of tuna? Will they have to open a new can of tuna? Will they be so confused that they decide to quit eating tuna altogether!? I mean, I can understand if tuna were a really bad food, like what I've seen in pastries where the manufacturer will list 2 servings for a muffin (that happens to have no way of storage, so people just eat the whole muffin anyway) so people aren't scared off by the actual amount of fat and cholesterol in the damn things, but this is TUNA! Tuna is great for you! High in Omega-3 fatty acids! High in protein! Low in fat! What do they need to hide? I'm scared that I've discovered some sort of dark secret that tuna manufacturers have keep hidden for ages. But I'll never stop eating my tuna, nope. Mmmm, my 2.5 servings of tuna...
Tuna....tu...*falls over*

don't read the nutritional facts, that way you won't have to worry about stuff like that.

I think the jerks expect you to only eat a little bit, and then eat other stuff.
But seriously, it's all just a scam perpetrated by the man, to make it look like your food isn't slowly killing you in the most delicious way possible. Except for, of course, tuna. Because, well,
Quote Tuna is gross.

Maybe they could give it to a midget?

i'm mad you had a tuna sandwich for dinner for two reasons:
- tuna is gross - a sandwich isn't dinner

I'm just glad the test is multiple choice. I could answer this question, but it would take too much recitation. The truth is that you can ignore those recommendations on one day if you slack in something else then, and then on another day, you do the reverse. That's about the gist of everything. Unless you're diabetic. Then you're going to probably die fifteen years before everyone else, which is not something nice to hear, but I swear the prof. says it every single day in class. I should really study for that test.

I don't know. But I do know I dislike Tuna also. Actually, I don't care much for fish in general.
Still, I like how Bill is watching his girlish figure. You go girl.

I just drank two 2 Liters.
Of Mountain Dew Game Fuel.
That's like 16 servings.

Great UncleBob, now you'll have to go fifteen days without drinking anything.

Wait... it's a fruit serving, right? I get, like five of those a day, right? So that's only 3+ days...

No, I'm pretty sure that this works like gasoline. 16 servings is about 16 gallons, or it would be if you were UncleSUV. In this case, you should probably hold off on refueling until you're low on gas, which should be in about two weeks, give or take.

I'm not sure I follow. It could be the fact that I've drained my blood and replaced it with Mountain Dew Game Fuel.

I'm not sure I understand this page you've linked me to... I mean:
Quote The Bad A large portion of the calories in this food come from sugars.
What's so bad about that? That sounds like "The Good" to me. "The Bad" would be that there's only two liters of Mountain Dew in a 2 liter bottle. There should be like seven. SevenlitersthatwouldbetastyIlikeMountainDewitssotastyeveryoneshoulddrinkitallthetime.

I abandoned can tuna a while ago and now only eat the waterless pouch tuna. It says it is 1 serving but I can make two decent sandwiches with it. And considering that 1 piece of bread is 1 serving and I use 2 slices per sandwich I am eating 2.5 serving per sandwich, since I can split the tuna to two servings.

i used to eat tuna as a kid, but only when it it was drowning in mayonaise in between two slices of bread.. therefore i've concluded that im a healthier person by NOT eating tuna (which is disgusting by itself).
im with Kush, i dont care much for fish in general.. and before anyone says something along the lines of "well what about a girls fish" or any stupid term for a vagina, let me say this:
if its fishlike in smell or resemblance than why would you like that? thats gross, get somethign fresh dammit!
sorry i just hate immature people that say that whenever i say i dont like fish.

You don't like any fish? What about fried catfish? With hush puppies, onion rings, and french fries? There is no tastier way to accelerate your demise.

Tuna is great, from the can, grilled tuna steak, I have yet to try it raw like the Japanese do but no doubt in my mind it must be great.
Mmm fish, mmmm meat, mmmmm food...I'm hungry now, damn it.

When your wife is out of the country for like a month and a half (and you don't like to cook), a sandwich is most definitely dinner.
Sometimes I'll eat a yogurt too, or if I already had a sandwich for lunch, I'll eat a salad. Sometimes I nuke a can of soup too, and eat the whole thing (not the can, just the soup inside).

A tuna sandwich is totally dinner if you make yourself a yummy club salad or soup on the side...
My personal favorite meal is vegetable beef soup topped with a couple cups of rice... =3

I never eat anything too sweet unless it's incredibly delicious, ice cream, or "magical". I think it's because, as a black man, I subconsciously fear diabetes even though my family has no record of it.
Weird.

The government doesn't do the research, in most cases, though. They outsource it to other establishments. Or something like that.

i can see your point there, i'm just spoiled because i can cook and i don't mind doing it, i try not to when i don't have to but when it comes to dinner time, a sandwich is just not an option for me. sandwiches are for picnics and something you throw together to eat as you're rushing out the door, to me anyway.

My dietary vice is definitely sweet stuff, especially drinks.. I do have a history of diabetes in my family, so I should probably cut down on them, but it's so hard
I'm not worried about weight gain though - that's what exercise is for! ( squash)

Well, I can tell you that statistics show that one in fifteen people have diabetes, that diabetes takes an average of fifteen years off of your life, that it is proportionate to obesity, and that when you return to a fit shape with diabetes, most everything about the disease typically goes away.
So if you remain healthy, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

I can cook when the mood hits me. I actually like to cook, but it's just that my grandma can't stay out of the way. Try and cook something and she will have to unload the dishwasher at that same exact time and pile the clean dishes up on the exact counter needed to use to prepare what is being used to make meal, and she does this right in the middle of what is being done so what is being cooked winds up getting screwed up.
So that is why I usually end of eating junky food instead of more healthy food.

ugh i haaaaaate people that get in the way. every single person in my family does it, but the worst by far is my stepfather. he's a chef so he wants to criticize everything and give you tips, and if you're lucky he'll just take over entirely and make something else than what you had in mind.
