Title: STRELL LOST THE BET!
Post by: Smash_Brother on September 17, 2007, 08:04:39 PM
Sorry, Strell.
If it's any consolation, I was doubting it as well.

Mashiro was the only one to say this, everybody. Not hordes of other people on the Internet or anything.

Indeed I did.
Kashogi and Khush need to give me their Paypal address and/or an address to send a money order to.
To fulfill vudu's request, I will be putting up an avatar shortly.
Edit: Avatar has been confirmed.

You took it like a man, that's for sure.
And like I said, their lack of comments about online play since it was first mentioned a year ago were discouraging. I'm glad they've finally confirmed it.

Not to mention that when online mode was briefly mentioned they said that duel matches worked perfectly while 4 player battles were extremely laggy.

I have no idea what that avatar is, but I'll take it.

Keep the money Strell. Winning the bet was all that I was interested in. I was just tired of you and other people complaining that there would be no Wi-Fi.
This calls for a celebration. Time to dig up old posts and mock people.
EDIT: Actually, you may want to keep the avatar also. That is such a great expression.

I wasn't the only one but I was the original person to say it.
You think my name is Mashiro just by coincedence? Think about it . . .

Wow, that's EXACTLY what I've been thinking about your name these past few weeks Shiro...

You have to admit that Nintendo didn't make it easy. First, they promise online for Brawl, then stay quiet about it for over a year, then when some talk of online surfaced they admit they had a lot of trouble with it.
When Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing, Pokemon D&P, Strikers Charged and Batallion Wars 2 were announced online was mentioned right away. Brawl's online mode, on the other hand, was always absent while other features were announced.
Again, Nintendo didn't help.

And then we can dig up all of Khush's posts relating to the staff position a couple months ago! That would be a blast!

That's not a bad idea. They provide great comic value and they would help get the word out that I am again seeking a position with the staff. But this time, it wouldn't be blatent self promotion. Instead, other people would be doing the promoting for me. Best of all, if I do get this new staff position, all those making fun of me will then have their posts turned around on them.
Life is a chess match and I'm two moves ahead of you. Oh yeah. You can really feel the arrogance in this post. Khushrenada is back and on a roll.

Yeah, Nintendo said something to the effect of "We're trying to get it to work." so skepticism was still warranted.
Apparently, they got it to work.

I wasn't so much as complaining as I was highly skeptical, for the reasons people above have pointed out.
I will keep the avatar because it's what I use at CAG, and again, it drives people nuts over there. I get PMs all the time for people asking me where it came from. It makes the pro-Nintendo people laugh and irritates the anti-Nintendo crowd, so I like it.
Plus that commercial is hilarious. Nintendo should have released completely untranslated Hot Mario ads over here.
Anyway, thanks for the update Khush.

If my history with online fighters ring true for this, I still feel like a lot of people around here aren't gonna like it once they figure out just how limited the range for a good matchup is going to be. All I'm gonna say is that if you expect to be able to play a wide variety of people all over you might as well turn around and forget about it.

That's the other truth here.
Australians won't be able to have any kind of decent fight with people in the states. Hell, even folks from Canada might have a hard time with people in the states.
And I think we'll be lucky if people on the east coast like me will be able to have an acceptable match with folks on the west coast.
I've been learning about networking in gaming and world states, clients and servers, etc. and the amount of data required for a SSBB game online with four players is going to make it DAMN difficult to play. The real issue is that, unlike Mario Strikers where you have a general range of where everything "should" be according to the server, SSBB is going to need pinpoint accuracy to determine how moves have gone off, if they hit, etc. With hitboxes being the way they are, a mere 1mm of offset can cause the whole game to desynchronize if the server sees it and the client doesn't.
Like if Fox goes to kick Wario as Wario is moving toward him and the server sees that Fox's kick landed. However, the client didn't see Wario begin moving toward Fox until 10ms later, and in the extra 10ms that Wario wasn't moving, Wario didn't get close enough to Fox for the kick to land and now the server and client are seeing different game states because one says Wario got smashed and the other does not.
Like Darknight said, good online matches are likely to be pretty rare because online fighting games have more variables than any other form of game.
And yes, it's because of things like this which I believe SSBB will HAVE to be slower.
