Title: Whatever happened to online?
Post by: Zach on September 14, 2007, 12:56:27 PM
What do you think, are they just waiting to make a huge announcement and floor everybody, or are they just hoping everybody forgets they ever mentioned it (kinda like online play for the gc)

Not casual enough, they also added a "Sit and be fit" mode into Brawl, hosted by Mario.

You trade tokens to gain access to unlockables, including trophies, the soundtrack and sound test, and concept art galleries.

Fighting games by their very nature are virtually unplayable without having to alter the way you play radically to adjust to lag. Even if it is online, I highly doubt too many people are gonna actually find it good.

online is just a gimmick and reason to add or subtract review points from.
Nintendo WANTS review points. Cuz Metroid Prime 3 failed to get them.

Wasn't Jump Ultimate Stars or whatever it's called online on the DS? Didn't people love that game? Smash isn't anywhere close to a standard fighting game, so maybe the problems that plague other online fighters wouldn't be a factor.

WI-FI ANNOUNED JUST NOW!
Quote This game supports Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. If you connect your Wii to the Internet, you can enjoy linked battles with distant people!
But because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.
The more distant you are, the worse your connection becomes, and the slower it feels. I apologize, but I hope you understand.

How many virgins, Nintendo? How many virgins did you kill? At what cost did you implement this unholy abomination, to what depths of wickedness and abhorrence did you debase yourself?

Greatest news ever?...Me thinks so...maybe...pretty close at least...I wonder what other Wi-Fi features they're planning on releasing?...and does anybody think there may be some Mii battles? I mean, just b/c of the icons you can choose...who cares....still great "official" news...

I'm glad to see Miis will be utilized, at least as icons. But this does greatly improve the chances of a Mii fighter and maybe a Wii Sports themed stage.

From the site: "Wii friends who have registered one another’s names can play together freely."
That seems to imply that people on your Wii friend list will be connected already.

Oh crap, and the button says "Enter friend code".
Unless they're planning a firmware update which will wipe out the Wii menu friend code system, then it makes no sense to be doing this.

Very optimistic now, aren't we? :p
In all seriousness while I am happy that online mode is FINALLY confirmed Nintendo will probably mess it up one way or another, whether it be the use of friend codes or lack of options.
Hate to be a party pooper but Nintendo has messed up online play before, why would Brawl be anything different?

Because it's impossible to mess up Brawl multiplayer. Items are unnecessary as are multiple fighting options. All we need is the ability for people to get together and fight and it's good enough. Even if there is a reduced number of stages that can be fought on, it won't matter because the only ones worth playing with other people are the ones with the least amount of frills.

what? I thought all the games of the console used the unique friend code list of the console, thats so lame.
good news still, but I don't see the appeal of going online with a fighting game (yes I know I'm very alone in that), something like the vouchers of MP3 is perfect for my internet needs.

I wish that were the case, but as Bill pointed out, the code entry in the screen is 12 digits whereas the Wii codes are 16 digits.
*This is a test version and those X's are placeholders until they get the friends code working better *The whole screen is a mockup. *You all miscounted the amount of numbers in friends codes. *It's temporarily running off Striker's net code until they make the changes required to use the global friends code system. *It really needs extra friends codes in addition to the Wii's address book. *There is an unlikely firmware update that reduces the amount of digits needed for a Wii friend code, which is also my Thursday the 20th "Predict the daily update" guess
There are plenty of explanations. Some good some bad, but I think it's silly to assume how friends code system works internally until they come out with the "Friends codes were built wrong" daily update. They might very well be using the OFCPG (One Friend Code Per Game, or 'Offkepig') but I don't know, and on top of that, I know I don't know.

Oh the friend codes thing doesn't bug me that much since I was planning on playing against my friends anyway. I'm just making fun of the fact that he is very positive that there is an alternative to friend codes to the point where he posts fake screens to prove his point.
It reminds me of back when the secret Melee clone characters were announced and people were angry as hell. They kept saying that the screens were fake and that the models were from an Unreal mod. The point is that they tried to cover up stuff with extreme positive thinking, which was just silly.

I'm not saying they will use system codes OR they are using OFCPG codes either. My point is that I don't know, and getting my hopes up (or down) is pointless. Internally (in my mind), it looks like they are using the OFCPG method, however I'm not going to say "Gosh dang it!" until I have some real evidence to back up my cynicism.

I don't want to start up the argument again, but I just don't want to have to put 50 friend codes in for SSBB, 50 for Mario Kart Wii, 50 for Animal Crossing, etc. when my Wii already KNOWS those 50 people.
Just doesn't make sense, is all.

Wow, Matt at IGN needs to calm down. When everyone is excited that they get to play Smash online for the first time...and is generally overall positive, Matt starts bitching about no voice chat in Brawl.
He can't understand why Nintendo would create this limitation and how it overall sucks that Nintendo would do this to him...he seems to take it personal.
Well, you know what here are some things to think about Matt.
1)Voice chat would be one more think taking up the bandwidth possibly slowing down the game and making it unplayable in 4-player mode.
2)Sure voice chat among your friends may have been cool, but voice chat with people that aren't your friends = royal suckage.
3)Nintendo still needs to protect itself. This is why friend codes are still used, and why voice chat is being delayed. The fact is...it doesn't matter if gamers have to put the friend codes in themselves, if parents find out their kids are talking to strangers online...Nintendo will be attacked by special interest groups, out for blood.
4)Who has time to chat when you are kicking ass and taking names.
Ok, I will admit that voice chat would have been cool, but I think it is an overreact to blog and complain about such a minor issue, specially if you don't know all the decisions behind it.
Last, he complains that the text taunts are archaic and he is upset that you can't know the names of the random people you play online. Well I like the fact I can go online and play anamously...and the text taunts can be great humor. I personally can't wait to write my taunts for in game play.
Title: RE: Online is ....... CONFIRMED!?!?!?
Post by: Adrock on September 19, 2007, 08:26:28 AM
Voice chat would've been nice.... but I'd never sacrifice gameplay for anything. I'd take a smoother 4-player online experience any day.
I wonder if it's possible for multiple players to play online from the same Wii. For example, my brother and I playing vs. people online.

Matt's a fair weathered friend, Spak. Now that Nintendo has admitted that SSB Brawl online might not be perfect he bitches and rant about how they are being unfair and lacking extra online options.
Title: RE:Online is ....... CONFIRMED!?!?!?

Matt's obsession with voice over text symbolizes everything that is going wrong with the game industry today.

hmm, voice chat...you know some of the best matches in smash bros are when fighting everyone is dead quiet. Super focused on winning, on the other hand its fun as hell to smack talk....
Matt complains about this, but he has to remember there is no microphone for the wii..not liek the xbox 360s..heck i dont think theres one like the xbox 360s for ps3. i certainly havnt seen my friends use one.
also, unless your from the 1700s..i think we've all heard of this lovely invention called a TELEPHONE
Title: RE:Online is ....... CONFIRMED!?!?!?
Post by: Spak-Spang on September 19, 2007, 09:02:44 AM
I don't mind honest critism. Specially in reviews of games.
But Matt believes it to his quest to influence Nintendo for the better...and sometimes I think he takes this too seriously, and pushes too much.
Do I think Nintendo needs to consider releasing voice chat in every online game, and do I see the potential for how cool that would be? YES.
But, I don't think every online game needs it. In fact, there as some cases when it is nice NOT to have that at all. Strikers is a great example. I don't want to hear rants at how badly I suck while online gamers are beating me ruthlessly. I would rather lose with dignity.
Honestly, if Matt wasn't on his podium preaching to the choir about voice chat for Battalion Wars and Eternal Ocean then I don't think he would have posted bitching about Brawl...instead he would have been excited like everyone else.
I think I just wish he would have waited to add this to his evidence of Nintendo "screwing up" because really Nintendo has been on top of its game recently, and I don't really need to spend more money on another device for my Wii.
Title: RE: Online is ....... CONFIRMED!?!?!?

hmm, if nintendo really wants to introduce voice chat it should....
release a firmware update for wii release a microphone allow the microphone to supersede all games...in the home menu possibly.

Someone should tell Matt Smash Bros Brawl does support voice chat, it's called your friends. I can see why people would like voice chat but honestly, for a game like Smash Bros the most fun is playing it in a room full of other people. Now I agree games like Battalion Wars and Eternal Ocean would benefit from voice chat but pretty much everyone else agree's as well. For Smash Bros though, it's just not that important for the experience.
Not to mention, most strangers you meet online end up being annoying 12 year olds or racist college students. The only time voice chat is nice is when talking to friends, but like I said, playing with friends when your all in the same place is still the best way to play Smash Bros anyday.

Quote Not to mention, most strangers you meet online end up being annoying 12 year olds or racist college students.
To say the least. And people are right when they say they need to squeeze every last bit of bandwidth out of the Wi-Fi connection. Fighting games are less forgiving than RTSes or other online games.
