Title: Nintendo Rules August Hardware Sales
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on September 13, 2007, 02:24:15 PM
Not surprisingly, Madden was the biggest selling game... but not so much on Wii.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=14385

The NPD Group's August sales figures have been posted at the NeoGAF forums (an official outlet of the NPD), and Nintendo is on top once again.  Wii took first place in the hardware race yet again, with just over 400,000 systems sold.  Nintendo DS is right behind with over 380,000 units.  In its second month of a price reduction, the PS3 sold roughly one third as many units as either Wii or DS, while Xbox 360 split the difference.

On the software side, EA's new Madden game easily conquered the month, with three versions (360, PS2, and PS3) in the top five.   The Wii version of Madden NFL 08 is way down the list, selling fewer copies than the Xbox (not 360) version. Nintendo's top-selling software was Wii Play with a quarter-million copies sold, while Metroid Prime 3: Corruption followed with over 200,000 sold.  Mario Strikers: Charged had close to 150,000 copies sold for the month.

I'm suprised Wii Madden did so poorly.
I hope Metroid gets the same numbers or better for September.

Is it really that hard to use a chart?

Nintendo Wii - 403,600 (4.0 million)
Nintendo DS - 383,300 (12.7 million)
Xbox 360 - 276,700 (6.3 million)
PlayStation 2 - 202,000 (39.1 million)
PlayStation Portable - 151,200 (8.3 million)
PlayStation 3 - 130,600 (1.75 million)

There; that wasn't hard, now was it?

Oh and I suspect Metroid Prime had something to do with the big sale numbers...

I'm waiting for the Ceric/SalesBot charts. Accept no substitute!

Well looks like PS3 is back to its own crappy sales, so much for the price drop.

Anyone has first week NPD numbers on Metroid Prime 1 and 2? Well, this only counts MP3's first 5 days on the market, but it would be close enough..

That would be interesting to see, though I would also like to know what the userbase was for MP1 and 2 when they were released.

Because we are not an official outlet for NPD data, I avoided quoting exact numbers.  It's a legal consideration.

I am surprised that PS3 was able to keep it's head above the 100k mark though.  as a person who would like to see the PS3 do as poorly as possible so that Wii may do as well as possible it's a bit disheartening...  at least Wii is still doing 4 times better than PS3 monthly and selling more than 360 (worldwide, since launch) at the same time!

Actually, I want to see the PS3 do as well as possible so that it can hold back the XBox 360. I'm not very concerned about Sony anymore, but the XBox 360's entrenched strength will fight the Wii for third party development, marketshare, and mindshare, for a long time still.

Are you saying numbers are copyrightable now?  If so... boy, that is a sad state of affairs.

If you really do feel that way, and are truly loyal to Nintendo, you should buy a PS3 posthaste!

Nope, facts can't be copyrighted but it's possible that those numbers count as trade secrets...

No, remember:  Sony said they were happy the PS3 wasn't selling well, since they lose money on every console sold.  You're falling into Microsoft's trap!

Sony easily has the best strategy ever. I mean NO ONE thought of that before, brilliant.

While "Facts" cannot be copyrighted, you have to take into consideration that the NPD numbers are pulled out of their backsides, since two of the largest Video Game Retailers (Wal*Mart and Toys R Us) don't report their sales to the NPD.

So these numbers aren't facts, they're magical works of fiction - and thus NPD could, ideally, claim copyright on them.

it really does surprise me that the ps2 and original xbox versions of madden outsold the wii's.  i didn't see that coming.  worst case, i thought we'd see it behind 360 and ps3.  i wonder if this will affect future ea games coming, like nhl or ncaa.

I'm surprised more people didn't comment on this and frankly it is something that people should be concerned about.  Honestly a lot of people didn't even know Madden 08 came out for the regular Xbox and yet it OUTSOLD the Wii version.  On a system that is the hottest thing out there and already has a user base in America of around 4 million.

This troubles me, because sports is a huge draw for many consumers and especially casual gamers.  And Nintendo has struggled with sports titles and that definitely factors into struggling with 3rd party support.

If EA can't even sell Madden (the biggest sports franchise) to the biggest user base of new consoles (the Wii), then what makes any other 3rd party feel like they would be successful with any of their sports franchises?  The lack of 3rd party support is still a concern for Nintendo and this doesn't help at all.

This news is rather troublesome...

Well, Madden 07 sold comparably on the Wii and the PS3 last year, so I don't know why there's so much disparity this year. I know that Tiger Woods sold a lot on Wii, but a lot of that was probably due to that awesome commercial with Tiger himself in it, and the Wii version being showcased and favoured above all the rest. Maybe Madden Wii didn't get that treatment.

Madden isn't eating enough.

He just doesn't carry the same buzz factor he used to when the PS2's HOLLYWOOD QUALITY GRAFIKS were the in-thing.

Am I the only one who absolutely, positively doesn't care if Madden sells even one unit on the Wii?  I want EA's actual efforts (MySims and to an extent, Tiger Woods) to sell well on the Wii, but when it comes to Madden, they don't even try anymore.  And I'm not just talking about the Wii version - it seems like the other versions are the same as last year's and the year's before.  Now, of course, I don't play the games, so I'm really just talking out of my back end - but hearing from those who do play Madden on a regular basis (and, for some reason, continue to buy it on a regular basis), I just don't care if the game sells at all.

Walmart Customer: "excuse me, uh wait, why does your name tag say UncleBob?"
UncleBob: "Yes, what can I do for you?"
Walmart Customer: "Can you get Madden Wii out of the case for me?"
UncleBob: "I DO NOT CARE IF  YOU PURCHASE THIS TITLE BLAARRRGH MY NAME IS RICHARD"

Ever thought that NWR checks their sources rather than blatantly linking Joe Gas Station's post from GAF?Mellow out guys.

The numbers are out there, but they may not be right. NWR just refuses to acknowledge the numbers as gospel at this stage.

You do realize that the GAF has an agreement with NPD, right? And that the figures in question were posted by the management there? And also that, in the past, these same figures are the ones that get quoted in the company press releases?

I don't think there is any reason to doubt their legitimacy in this case, although I'm not faulting them for choosing to respect the agreement GAF has with the NPD.
