Title: The lefty rant
Post by: mantidor on September 06, 2007, 06:17:12 PM
Because I finally got the damn console and I'm a little drunk, I decided to just rant about lefty controls since no one cares, and no one will read this anyway.
Wii Sports:
Not only the lamest packed-in game ever (A single Mario party game offers more, in fact it should have been the pack-in), it simply does not offer any lefty option, AT ALL. It's even insulting enough to ask you to use the remote in the dominant hand for the boxing game, yet it still maps the right punch to the remote, and never offers you the option to swith, does it matter? maybe not, I hate sports in general, so I have no idea if leftie golfers and leftie baseball players place themselves in the opposite position, but this crap just tells you Nintendo's position about lefties.
rating: -8/10
Update: Somehow now the game offers the option, right after choosing the mii, which is odd because it never happened before I swear so,
Rating: 0/10
Super Paper Mario: Cool game, yet the remote is meant to be pointing at the screen, here we can see that Nintendo doesn't care about lefties in anyway whasoever. In the process of porting the game from its original GC incarnation to its bastardized wee version, they decided to cram-in the pointing functionality with some lame ID function, so righties just flip the remote, easy right? well no, you have to do it with your right hand if you want to use the strap, suddenly trying to identify something doesn't seem so fast and easy, heh? we can't use the stupid strap at all! the TV and nearby innocent bypassers are at the mercy of our clumsiness, and we tend to be clumsy, this is just unacceptable.
ok only idiots would left the remote to fly over a room in a game like paper mario, yet the strap should be longer just to please my own leftie-zealot self rating: -3/10
Now just you wait until I get my hands on MP3 tomorrow, I will shread the game into little pieces.

This is no place for zealous lefties to be spreading lies. This is NWR, not NPR.
Wii Sports most certainly does, at some point (I don't remember when, exactly,) ask you which hand is your dominate hand, and then adjusts things accordingly.

Actually, it ask which hand you use for each sport just after you chose your Mii. maybe you should sober up a little so that you can actually read whats going on on the screen, change everything for your Mii over to lefty, then proceed to get back to the level of drunk you were previously at before you started sobering up..

Ugh, I'm embarrassed to share Southpaw kinship with mantidor...
Thankfully I'm not a BIG BABY, and can adapt...

My left handed friend prefers to bowl right handed.

Wii sports is easy to do with either hand. Really~! The gestures are very simplistic so it doesn't require you to be that great with either hand. Its the magic of waggle technology, you don't have to be good, just make your hands jitter and shake AND YOU WIN!

Um, I box with my left and I kick butt.
And its funny but I prefer to bowl with my right as well. I also use my right hand to cut with scissors.

You all lefties fail, I always use my left hand in every possible situation when you have to choose one or the other, you are not real lefties!

I have to check this, I did try to look everywhere possible, and the game so far has never asked me. the only place where it "asks", which is bowling, it only shows a message saying "place the remote in your dominant hand" and thats it.
oh and this is a RANT, don't take it too seriously :P

Drinking would be way too easy. I say he should snort dust from a finely grained plastic straw. That would be a low high enough to let him find his issues.

I'm close to the end in the gane, so its time to rate the thing
Metroid Prime 3:
It was almost going to get the perfect rating, because really it was perfect! Samus does everything with her left hand except shooting, and shooting doesn't matter at all, but of course they had to messed it up somehow. One of the special switches requires to be rotated and place some discs, but somehow they decided to do that with the arm cannon!! damn them! it was going perfect, but now I don't see 100% of the time my actions being reflected on the screen, and for nothing, those switches could have been made to be operated by Samus' left hand.
I was almost going to ignore the grapple beam not being a "beam" but just a lasso, since it had to be operated with the nunchuck which meant my right hand was doing samus' left hand actions, but now it will take some points out of it.
rating: 7/10

Bump for great justice.
So far it has been passable, yes most game characters still hold everything in their right hand, like this silent hill game, metroid games, its ok, wii sports resort has the archery all wrong, but again passable...
BUT, this is simply damn irritating and frustrating, as I fanboy of the art style series, I'm sadly giving 0/10 to base10, a game I would love, if it wasn't for the fact that the stupid thing doesn't have a lefty mode. Yes, the game is unplayable for me and the rest of southpaws, great work nintendo!

I don't find left-handy complaints valid unless you're left-eye dominant.
I'm left-handed and right-eye dominant. I bat, use firearms, and use melee weapons from a righty stance. The exception would be racquet sports.
If you GREW UP PLAYING NINTENDO GAMES WITH THE D-PAD ON YOUR LEFT THUMB, you shouldn't be using the Nunchuk in your right hand; your left is perfectly trained for the age-old role. I just built upon what I ALREADY knew by keeping the directional controls on my left hand, and "new" Wii actions being learned by my right hand.

whatever needs more precision goes to my left hand, pointing at the screen requires far more precision than moving the stick. I'm used to it and wouldn't have it any other way.

We are superior to these foolish people with one useless hand.
EDIT: Actually, I kind of wish The Conduit had a left-handed option. I just came off of playing Elebits, which had one, so now I have to re-adjust.

I'm a southpaw and have little issue with Wii games. Like Pro stated if you grew up with console games the nunchuck should work fine in your left. Plus the IR is really a different (and for me more enjoyable) alternative to using a mouse so FPS games on Wii come naturally in the same way.
I write with my left hand but in several activities I can and sometimes have to play right handed. I can't bowl worth crap with my left hand and in baseball when I was young I was know to randomly switch hands when I batted, though I always threw balls with my left hand. In raquet sports like tennis and pickle ball or even ping-pong I will switch hands on the fly as opposed to using a backhand swing and I nearly perfected the technique when I took Pickle ball in college.

I've extensively criticized the dumb mirroring of Zelda wii, I even made a thread about it four years ago when they revealed the wii trailer. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=17379.msg264241#msg264241)
But those times have come and gone, we now know that TP sucked and moved on.
So, you people are still missing the important thing here Base10 doesn't have a lefty mode, Ouendan has one and is a game that doesn't even need it, for shame Nintendo! I'm going to write a strongly worded letter.

I've never found it terribly debilitating being a lefty. I guess I just play Wii games right handed. It wasn't too hard to adjust. Funnily enough I play cricket right handed.

Considering the motion/IR implementation in TP I don't really see why they had to make Link a righty. It was more a superficial move to create the illusion you had more control than you did. Handedness doesn't matter for canned sword swings and IR bow pointing other than a minor illusion point to trick people into thinking they are there.

I don't think that's the point, though. It isn't that people can't adapt, it is that they shouldn't have to. After over 30 years of gaming, one thing I'm constantly disappointed about is that there still isn't a standard feature of customizable controls. There is no single control setup which is perfect for everyone, people have their preferences so all games should contain options to use the controller however people see fit. Since that's such an easy feature to incorporate, it is simply inexcusable that it hasn't become a standard.

i thoguth this comparison was interesting, although i might do it over in paint over photoshop, because for ome reson the caligraphy brushes on there look spiffy.
I can write with the mouse pretty well with my right hand, this has took years of practice
i write as well as i can write with a stylus with my left hand, thats not the best sample though
i can kinda write with my right hand with a stylus, but its really hard to keep it straight
its almost impossible to write with my left hand using a mouse, the mouse in contoured for right hands, i had to change the slant of the brush just to try to go with my strokes.

Bill never left, it was all a hoax to get the fanboys back on their high horses and rally against the anti-nintendo sentiment running rampant thru this, a Nintendo forum.
Like Tupac and Elvis, Bill living in a remote tropical island where he secretly checks up on the forums as an alternate persona. However unlike Tupac, his faux martyrdom yielded results (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=30478.0) from the message he spread.
