Title: IGN's SSB Brawl FAQ...
Post by: NWR_pap64 on September 03, 2007, 05:42:49 AM
IGN recently posted their big FAQ/Guide on Brawl. It's basically posting info from the SSB Brawl website but with some extra additions (like a brief history of SSB and such).

What intrigues me is the Q&A part. One of the questions goes like this:
Wi-Fi, or no Wi-Fi?
Question: Will Super Smash Bros. Brawl be online?

All reports indicate that yes, it will. Brawl has been planned from the beginning to be a flagship title for Nintendo's free Wi-Fi Connection service, and though the feature hasn't yet been 100% confirmed, you can rest soundly in the knowledge that it's an almost surefire guarantee.

Either they know something we don't or they are speculating because online mode was still up in the air, specially since they came out and said that they had online mode running perfectly in duel mode but were having problems running 4 player battles online.

Man, I wish Nintendo would just come out and confirm/deny Wi-fi mode.

You can read the rest of IGN's FAQ here.

They are just stating the obvious (I read that a few days ago), all signs point to Nintendo wanting Wifi in the game so . . .

What reports again? We got word of online when the game was announced, but haven't got anything since. It could have been canned. However, I think they'll make the official announcement right after Halo 3 comes out.

I'm in the "Don't really care if it does or not" camp, but would rather it did so I don't have to deal with the huge amount of angst that would inexplicably spew forth from Smash_Brother, et al...

My bet still stands.

Do you all remember when the first Diamond and Pearl press release came out?  For the US I'm talking...

Anyway, it said nothing about Online.  The Internet 'kind of' freaked out.

Nintendo was just saving the "announcement" for later to further hype the game.

It IS going to be Online.  Strell is screwed in his bet.  What I'm not convinced about is whether that will be 2 player or 4 player.

What I want to know are the third-party characters to be included. Not because I'm necessarily hoping for any one in particular, but because having that knowledge would offer significant insight as to what Nintendo and its third parties have planned.

Also, the following quote leads me to take the rest of the FAQ with a giant grain of salt.

Quote

Gooey Bomb was the first new item to be revealed for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and it doesn't seem to come from any past Nintendo title. Instead, it most resembles a character – yes, a character – from the homo-erotic Japan-only shooter series, Cho Aniki. Now before you dismiss that connection completely, there are some development team members in common between the Smash and Cho series, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that some creative inspiration was brought over from such an, ahem, unlikely source. Cho Aniki: Seinaru Protein Densetsu, or "Legend of the Holy Protein," allowed you to control the Holy Protein, a flying glob of goo that flew flanked by Adon and Samson, two musclebound smiling flying men

The difference is that they confirmed Wifi mode way before the game was released and we all knew the Japanese release had it. Brawl's online mode, though, has been up in the air. Even Animal Crossing DS and Mario Kart DS, two big titles, announced Wifi before they were released.

I won't count out the possibility of holding the news back in order to generate hype (same with the Sonic news) but its weird they are holding the news back for this long.

It's also possible that the player question is not answered yet.  I mean, they said a while back that they were having problems with 4 player.  If they still haven't confirmed that 4 players will work relatively lag free but are still trying, they aren't going to want to come out and confirm 2 player and hear the internet explode because of it.

I'm telling you all: timing is key. They'll announce the 2P online when the time is right.

Wow. Two-player online is so impressive in a game that thrives on four-player mayhem.

I hope it doesn't have any kind of online connectivity at all.

The question becomes, is Paladin always lurking around and only posts when the opportunity to knock online gaming presents itself, or does he only appear when the moons align and the blood of a virgin is spilled in battle?

I think they always mysteriously coincide..

Actually it used to be the virgin blood thing but Nintendo's already sacrificed what little of it there is left these days trying to get SSBB online.

Hey, don't slap that label on ME! You want to see the people pissed at lack of online? Look at the people who bet Strell money that it would be in the game.

I probably won't even find the time to play the game when it releases so online isn't exactly going to be the deal-breaker for me.

And calling it "inexplicable" is a gross inaccuracy. It's perfectly explicable when a developer says, "Yeah, we're pretty sure we'll have it in there." and then doesn't. That kind of thing tends to make fans angsty. Even if it doesn't piss me off, I can understand how suggesting something and then going back on it will piss people off.

Actually, to kick that up a notch, Nintendo pretty much guaranteed online in the beginning . . . so angry from it lacking online is perfectly acceptable.

True, from a rational perspective.

But bobble-headed Nintendo fanbots will still defend the lack of online play, regardless.

That was when SSB didn't even have a director and Nintendo was making a lot of empty promises.

Doesn't change the fact that they said it.

Also Masahiro Sakurai said that when discussing online with Nintendo, Smash was the first game that came to mind as something that must be done and that he was pushing the game to be online.

So I mean there is a tremendous push to have this online, combined that with what's been said and it still give validity to those that would be angry (such as myself).

Anger is understandable, but all the angst in the world won't make a bit of difference.  The balls are inert.  Personally, I'm baffled by all the doubt, not so much the promises of rage.

It's funny about the Wi-Fi stuff.  Though it really doesn't matter to me, since there's still a lot of fun to it even if you can get one person to play with you.  Besides, even if it does have Wi-Fi support, it won't work for me since I run Satellite internet.  It's the most fake 'broadband' there ever is.

I'm still questioning the online support anyway.  Once it's confirmed, then it'll be fine.  I'm not getting my hopes up thankfully.  By the way...

Apparently this image is starting to float around the internet.  So far, I wouldn't believe it because there's still a bit of an ESRB issue.  I haven't heard of an official rating yet, and if it there was one, it'd be posted on the website.  Not to mention that online game stores still show RP pictures.  Seems that front cover is starting to disappear too.  I think the most obvious thing in the picture that'd be a dead giveaway would be the amount of stock pictures and controllers.

Hopefully I'm not late on this image on the forum :x.  I actually just saw it for the first time today.

It's 'Wi-Fi Connection', not 'Wifi Connection'. And besides, it looks like a hack job regardless.

Sure it will.

When a developer makes a decision like that and gets mailed a box of fire ants which swarm him and rend the flesh from his bones, the next developer to make decision like that would think twice before doing it.
