Title: Official Poikemon Trainer Discussion
Post by: Sir_Stabbalot on August 13, 2007, 07:22:03 AM
I figured that this would help from getting Bill's thread too crowded.
Anyway, I think it's an interesting idea. A character who takes no actual part in the fighting and relies on his underlings is really a twist on things. I just wonder how KO's will be handled.

I thought they said that the Pokemon shared a damage meter, so I guess knocking any one of them out is a KO since there's only one out at a time.
I hope instead of alternate colors, you can change your trainer to a different character model :3

That makes perfect sense.

That would be great. I hope that every character has one costume that totally changes their model, like Mario could have a Dr. Mario outfit, Samus have a Fusion suit, and so on.

That seems to be the case from what we know. Nothing would imply that they function like the Ice Climbers do currently. I would assume that when one gets KO, the Pokémon itself arrives back down in the stage with a lost life accounted for (ala the way it's done with Zelda/Shiek)

In that respect, I hope they use the alternate color schemes for the Pokémon themselves that are already in the games. A black Charizard looks pretty nice (even if a yellow Ivysaur does not..).

To be fair, Pikachu should be able to attack the trainer directly.

Does anyone else think there could be an unlockable character called Female Pokemon Trainer? Since Pokemon Trainer is representing the original generation, the female trainer could be the one that represents the new generation and her Pokemon could be the three starters of Diamond/Pearl.
And for outfits, Pokemon Trainers different costumes could be the character model of all the leading Male characters and Female Pokemon Trainers different costumes could be the character models of all the leading Female characters.

No, because Sakurai is smart enough to know that nobody cares about anything after Red and Blue.

I really hope there is a female trainer in the game.

I'd rather they stay away from clones this time around, if possible...Thus, a costume makes the most sense...

Come on, you know you wouldn't mind a playable Giovanni with Persian, Nidoking and Rhydon...

Turn that Nidoking into Nidoqueen and I might reconsider...

That wouldn't really be a clone though, as those three pokemon would have to play differently than squirtle, venasaur, and charizard.

Well neither would a female trainer, technically, if she had new Pokémon.

I am curious about the Up Special recover attacks.
I would love IvySaur to have a whip attack that can attach to ledges and even people to slingshot quickly back up to the playing field.
Obviously, Charizard can and will fly somewhat for recovery. I have no idea how Squirtle will recover.
I am hoping that Squirtle is a fast character that can speed around almost as fast as Pikachu and Ivysaur be a mid-weight character with pretty weak jumping skills. Finally Charizard will be a monster heavy weight with huge jumping and flight potential, but perhaps his Stamina drops faster.
Also on discussion of Pokemon management, it would be cool if certain attacks are designed to hurt certain Pokemon more.
Squirtle should be very vunerable to electric attacks, but perhaps could hurt or counter fire attacks with his water.
Ivysaur would be very vunerable to fire attacks from Bowser, but pikachu's electric attacks would do less damage.
Finally, Charizard would be vunerable to water attacks, and perhaps pyschic attacks from Ness.
It would add some fun Pokemon strategy to the game, even if it doesn't always come up into play during matches.

Well, Squirtle's recovery Up+B will be to blast a stream of water downward, propelling himself upward. I thought everyone knew this by now.

They don't have to be clones, each could have different pokemon with different abilities.

We already talked about a female trainer. I wanted her to use the johto set.

I agree with Ty on the alternate costumes being different generic trainer types. PKMN Breeder, Pokemaniac, CoolTrainer, Lass, Rocket. Stuff like that.

As as in the other thread, I again doubt it, since the Pokemon are Red's starters, and those other trainers have different Pokemon which Sakurai and the team aren't going to program just for costume changes. I bet they'll give him the outfits of the G/S, R/S, and D/P trainers at best.

Brock needs to be an assist trophy. He molests every female character on the screen.

Too bad Sakurai said he won't be adding characters that originated in anime...(I know Brock is in the games, BUT his anime personality is NOT...)

I don't think anyone in this topic talked about the trainer's Final Smash attack.
But most likely it will be that the Pokémon is swapped out for a Legendary Pokémon. Since Groudon and Deoxys are in Poké Balls, it'd have to be someone else...like Dialga.
