Title: Original Super Smash Bros. on the Virtual Console?
Post by: NWR_pap64 on August 10, 2007, 01:44:57 PM
A friend of mine just made me realize something...

You know how in honor of Metroid Prime 3 Nintendo is going to release the original Metroid and Super Metroid on the VC? Well, what if Nintendo could take the same initiative with Brawl? I mean, what better way to celebrate the release of Brawl (with possible online play) than releasing the game that started a phenomenon in mascot fighters!

Makes sense. They released Paper Mario months after Super Paper Mario was released and now they are doing it with the Metroid games so its only fair that they release the original SSB just in time for the release of Brawl around the world.

What do you think?

They'll probably do it but I wouldn't get smash on the VC.

I mean Super Metroid is more like ZOMG WTF of a release than the original Smash for well obvious reasons.

But to stay on topic I think you're right, I'm sure they will release it in a similar fashion before Super Smash Bros Brawl.

It'll probably be the first game I get on the VC...oh, if only they'd update the original for online play, that would be amaaaaaazing...

I think Super Metroid on VC is a little more exciting than Super Smash Bros. only because Super Metroid has never been re-released ever and it came out 13 years ago. To be honest, I just never understood that either. It's constantly ranked as one of the best games ever made. It seemed like the perfect game to port to GBA. I certainly would've bought it again.

If Brawl sucks, SSB64 on the VC will be the only salvation for the franchise for me.

Does not compute . . . does not compute.

If Brawl sucks everyone involved in the game should be killed. There. I said it.

Oh, agreed in full, but ruling it out as a possibility invites it to happen.

I've played the fate game for years with stuff like this.

We are talking about different types of "suck".

I'm sure Brawl itself will be one great and solid game, one that will be on many a "best game of 07" lists and that is guaranteed to be filled with surprises.

What S_B is talking about is that even if the game gets lots of accolades from the media and the fans the issues that arose in Melee are still present in Brawl (lame unlockable characters and clones, balance issues, a rushed feel to it) and thus might be a low quality product.

It may or may not happen so we'll see...

Yeah I mean it's possible I just hope the extra years worth of development time was enough to make it the best possible Smash experience for everyone.

/hope =)

Its just too bad that Nintendo hasn't released a playable Brawl demo. All we have heard so far have been ideas and thoughts about how the game might play. There's a big difference between what the developer thinks about the game and the final product.

So now we just have to wait till the game is released to finally see how good the game is.

Just so we're clear... that's a very good kind of suck.

Did I just hear Melee called a "low quality product?"  I never realized I've spent so much of my time w/ friends and gotten so much enjoyment from such a low quality product before..... :-P  I can understand the balance issues and whatnot, but it is in no way a low quality product...it still holds up better than most games today, and I'll keep playing it for quite some time...

Melee was a very good game, yes, but it was definitely a victim of circumstance. Nintendo wanted the game out just in time for the GC's launch and thus we have a game that while good could've been so much more. The proof that the game was rushed is everywhere; last minute clone additions to expand the roster, menus that are not well aligned (like the character select menu and the stage select menu), missing Pokemon (Ditto), a planned Fire Emblem stage, balance issue and an unevenly number of collectible trophies and missing characters (like Brock, Diddy and fully detailed characters).

I hope Brawl is the game Melee should have been and MORE.

I think this is likely to happen.  I expect the original Smash Bros to be released some time in November to prepare us for Brawl.  But if that is the case it won't be as just a month of Smash...but part of a Month of Mario.

Super Mario Bros 3
Doctor Mario
Super Smash Bros
Super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Kart

All or some of these games could be saved for that month.

I could see them saving Super Mario Bros. 3 for when Galaxy is released. Super Mario Bros. 2 is already on the Virtual Console. Dr. Mario could see as just a normal release while Mario Kart could be saved for when they release Mario Kart Wii.

Pap64 Perhaps you are right.

I only mention being part of Mario Month because the virtual console release should be before Brawl, which would mean a November VC launch.  So why not tie it into a game celebration already going on.

As for whether or not you want to download the original, I think it is a no brainer.  The original game is a classic that can be appreciated for what it brings as well as being a fun game itself.

A must purchase.

Now you know, and that's half the battle.

Don't my word for it, though. The VC releases are just as unexpected at the Daily SSB updates. For all we know, we could get SMB 3 at the end of the month or even next year! But considering how they are having a Metroid Month in honor of Prime 3 I wouldn't past them to use a classic game to tout the release of a new one.
