Title: The Official "I WANT THIS CHARACTER IN THE GAME" Thread
Post by: Spak-Spang on August 09, 2007, 03:19:53 PM
Yes, a big part of the Smash Brothers Brawl discussion was spreading rumors and desires about characters you think deserve to be in the game. Many posts have been made about what moves they could have and why each character should be in the game...and then the fun came with the spamming and arguing and fighting. Instead of polluting other threads lets keep it confined to here.

Young Link ----> Wind Waker Link Luigi ----> Poltergust 3000 Luigi Ganondorf ----> New Move-set Ganondorf
Midna/Wolf Link Paula Lucario Krystal Ridley (Though I wouldn't mind if he were an Assist Trophy...) Olimar Ray MK-II (Again, wouldn't mind if he were an Assist Trophy...) Jill/Drill Dozer Lyn (Though I wouldn't mind any female Fire Emblem character...) Sami
Then there's the characters that have little-to-no chance of making the cut...Isaac (Golden Sun) and Vaati...
I'd be happy if half of this list made it...

I will start, again.
I have only demanded a few characters for the game...and most of you have already heard this ideas. But here they are again.
Olimar
Olimar would be a defensive character. In fact all his special attacks require calling his Pikmin minions to attack for him. Down Special is pulling up more minions to attack, and such. The best characteristic of Olimar in the game will his Pikmin trailing behind him trying to keep up. They may even do minor damage to opposing players on the way. But Olimar players will have to be careful because his personal attacks are not very powerful without Pikmin assistance. He must be constantly managing his Army in the midst of a huge Brawl.
Mega Man
the Capcom Representative is Mega Man. He is a ranged attacker, but won't be a simple Kirby/Samus clone. His Evade move is his classic Slide and will Evade further than most characters, allowing him to get a better range advantage on his opponents. His other attacks are copied from robots he has defeated in his games. Forward B is a Cut Man Boomerang move that goes out and then boomerangs back in a full circle. Regular B is the Mega Blaster and can be charged. Up B is the Tornado attack from Air Man. This move in the air is activated right below Mega Man causing him to spin straight up in the air and glide down. This move can be interrupted so he can get back to battle. I dunno what Down B would be...but his Shield instead of a Bubble could be the Leaf Shield defense from Wood Man.
Bomber Man
The first 3rd party character comes to Smash in a big way. Bomber Man is a Blaster. He is going to use his bombs to protect his Area and set traps for his opponents. He is a very unconventional ranged character, because his attacks are not projectile based. His weakness is close combat, but that is balanced by the fact that he is a Heavy Character but has the speed of the Lighter weight characters.
Jill
Jill comes to Brawl with a Brand new Mech filled with all the tricks she needs to compete in combat. Her most powerful attack is her Drill Bit that can be charged up to 3 separate levels WOW!!! What is more, is that Once charged it can be held until ready to use. (Like DK's Punch.) Her Drill Bit attack will dash her slightly across the screen and with each power increase she can go further and cause more damage. 3rd level can provide an Instant kill, much like Roy's charge. Jill's Up B is not much on damage potential but turns her craft into a Copter to allow her to fly up to safety. Forward B will allow her to "stop" any attack be it special or normal, and Drill through the attack countering it...but the timing must be perfect.

I want Palutena to be selectable... oh, nevermind......
Sonic will absolutely be a selectable character. I'd put money on it. Mario + Sonic = sales and everyone knows it. And even though the Smash Bros. fan base is split on Sonic being in the game, no fan will boycott the game. Moreover, Nintendo knows that, by including Sonic, they'll spark even more interest in the game. People who aren't Smash Bros. fans will buy the game out of curiosity and if you don't think they will, you're kidding yourself. Just because you wouldn't do it, doesn't mean others (with expendable cash and extra time on their hands) wouldn't.
Then again, Nintendo has done the opposite of what makes sense... many, many times so who knows? I'm still banking on Sonic being in the game. Nintendo likes making money and this would make them even more money than they're already going to be making on the game.

If any FF character makes it, it'll be Cloud. Smash Bros. fans might object, but they still won't boycott the game. Brawl would sell even more copies because Final Fantasy fans everywhere would get hard-ons (yes, even the ladies... somehow) at the prospect of Cloud being in another game... or anything really.

It would be the coup de grace for Sony this generation for sure :P, and to be frank I'd rather see Cloud than Sonic. But I think that a FF6 character would be more likely (because that game actually came out on a Nintendo system....). Regardless, I would like for some FF character to be included...
Anyways, I wonder if they are going to bring any of the non-Pikachu pokemon back as playable characters.

I'd like Mr. Resetti to be playable, but I expect he'll be an AT.
I'd be stunned if Sonic isn't playable.
And I'd like a playable moogle, specifically Mog from FF6, but it'd probably be a generic moogle.

I'd be stunned as well. The minute Solid Snake appeared in the first teaser trailer and third party characters in the game were confirmed the first name that came out of the media and the fans' mouth was Sonic. If he is not in the game then I shall mark it as the biggest missed opportunity in all of history.
I would love to see Little Mac. Its very annoying that Nintendo has ignored him for years now when they are well aware that Punch-out is one of their most popular titles ever and whenever its released people go crazy over it (like when it was released on the Virtual Console). The game has made appearances in Animal Crossing and is one of the most popular games on the VC, so its annoying that the Ice Climbers, who were in one game and people didn't even know who they were, became fighters when Little Mac was downright ignored. Hell, EA recognized his existence in one of the Fight Night games by making him a playable character (even though they used the Super NES version and he was scary as all hell)!
Punch out is constantly paid tribute to via parodies and fan videos (as this Nintendo short cuts entry shows). The game has a rather large fanbase, especially for a game that was hasn't had a sequel or a remake in more than 10 years.
At the very least I want to see him as an assist trophy. I want him in the game so bad that I don't care if they used the arcade Mac, the NES Mac or the SNES Mac. He should be in the game, PERIOD.

Yeah, Mac deserves a spot for sure.
I don't know about sales, but Punch-Out was so huge on the hype meter back in the day that it was legendary amongst kids, certainly more worthy than Ice Climbers, G&W and Dr. Mario.

The funny thing is that in the end it's Sega's call whether or not Sonic makes the cut...And guess what Sega is best at?
And Little Mac WILL be in the game in some form, be it playable character or Assist Trophy...

That's true, although they were quick to pit Sonic against Mario at the Olympics. And even if Sega is prone to make idiotic decisions even they must be aware of the large fanbase SSB has and that allowing Sonic in the game would help out both Nintendo and Sega, perhaps even more than the Olympics game.

I think he'll be in the game for the sole fact that Sega loves to wh@re Sonic out all over the place. There was even a Sonic game on the Ngage, FFS!
It'd be JUST like them to miss the opportunity to wh@re out Sonic on the ONE occasion they really should.

Yeah it was a great short film. Too bad it didn't make the top 10 finalists.
The video proves the staying power Punch Out has. Even if Mac was even more silent and, dare I say, generic than the rest of the Nintendo crew he definitely has a presence. I mean, as a kid I was always amazed at how this little guy could face and defeat these freaky giants. He's perhaps one of Nintendo's biggest underdogs.
So once again its very unfair that Nintendo has ignored the fame this one character has, especially in a game that basically celebrates everything great and fun about Nintendo :\ .

well, I have very fond memories of Punch Out, it was too hard for me in that time, but my cousin beated everyone at the end, with all of us, the other cousins watching it, great times. However, I really wouldn't like to see Little Mac as a playable character, he basically just punchs and thats it, it would be a wasted opportunity to include someone with more variety... like...
TINGLE!
ok, I know it won't happen, but I hope at least Olimar makes it.

I always wonder about characters with size issues. For instance, Snake and Samus are people size, Mario is a shorty, and Pikachu and Kirby are small. But, Olimar is not much bigger than a bottle cap, and Ridley is freaking huge. Characters like that would have to be seriously resized.

The characters aren't supposed to be 100% accurate to their official series counterparts. Olimar and Ridley can both be easily resized to fit since resizing them doesn't affect them one bit. Olimar would still be able to throw his Pikmin and punch you and Ridley would still be able to shoot fireballs and swing his tail.
Plus according to Kirby's profile in Melee he's only supposed to be 8 INCHES tall, yet in the game he's the same height as Mario. This shows that size doesn't matter and isn't going to be a factor for stopping certain characters from appearing.

One of Ridley's main advantages is precisely his size, not as much as Kraid, but it's still important. I really wouldn't like Sakurai to weaken him to fit with the rest, I'll rather have an assist trophy with a giant ridley attacking everyone, or a stage like Kraid had in Melee, is the only thing that could do him justice.

The video I posted is just one of the many Punch-out tribute and parody videos you'll find on sites like You Tube, Newgrounds and many more. Its true that one fan video doesn't prove that a game has a loyal, popular following, but when something like Punch-out has MANY tribute and parody videos under its belt its hard to deny that it left an everlasting impression on a whole generation of gamers. Hell, Punch-out has even been the basis of other parody videos like this Michael Jackson parody video.
Again, its very weird that Nintendo has downright ignored Punch-Out's appearance in SSB, a game that supposedly celebrates everything Nintendo.

Not really, Ridley's size has varied with most of the Metroid games and has never played a huge factor. When fighting Ridley it's all about him shotting fireballs and using physical attacks, which he can easily do resized.
Plus the Ridly fight that's considered the best by a lot of fans is his fight in Super Metroid because of how tough he was in that game.
As you can clearly see, in Super Metroid he wasn't that big compared to Samus yet that's considered the toughest Ridley fight. Which shows his size isn't that important to him and he can easily be a strong fighter if he's about the same size as Bowser is in Brawl.

I never believed that Olimar's size is accurately portrayed by the Pikmin games treasure.
The reason being is that the game is supposed to be abstract...and what better way to represent treasure found in a big world gardening than human trinkets.
That is just how I saw it...but I may just be odd.

Toughest Ridley boss: Prime on Hard Mode. You can't even wavebuster him anymore. Boooo!
Ridley should be a boss in Adventure Mode. I don't see how he'd work as a playable character. He can fly (the second stage of Meta-Ridley doesn't count). They might be able to cheat by changing his size, but taking away flight from his character is definitely pushing it way too far.

I feel like doing a little character math...
OK here are the following character stats:
Returning characters: Mario Link Zelda Sheik Ganondorf Peach Bowser Pikachu Kirby Samus Donkey Kong Yoshi Fox
TOTAL: 13
New characters: Wario Pit Metaknight Zero Suit Samus Solid Snake Ike Pokemon Trainer
TOTAL: 7
Final tally: 20 characters announced so far
The question is; will the final tally grow to the rumored 40 or be around the 30s?

Technically Samus should have unlimited jumps too. The point is that Ridley is almost always flying. Part of the challenge of facing Ridley is that he's always swooping around and stuff. I can buy the changes made to other characters since other things are more defining about them (i.e. Kirby's copy ability). I guess I just can't imagine a Ridley that doesn't fly being faithful to the character. Not that I'd mind being proven wrong, I just can't see it myself.
Quote So with the latest update showing Charizard as one of the pokemon you can control by choosing the Pokemon Trainer character, does this change anyone elses opinions on Ridley being a possible character?
Not really. If Charizard can fly, as the Pokemon trainer, you're still faced with the fact that you can't use him the whole match and if you try to and he's off the stage, he might fall like a rock due to low "stamina."

I've wanted Olimar to be in the game since it was announced; To me, Pikmin 2 was the best game on the GameCube. Sonic has to be in there, with Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik as ATs, and if I were Nintendo I wouldn't have agreed to Mario & Sonic at the Olympics unless Sega went along with that.\
Also, Dr. Kawashima's disembodied head needs to be an AT; his power can be dumping math problems on the stage.

How right you are.
I cannot even find myself arguing against a single first or second party character now, they all seem possible because of Pokemon Trainer, not that this is a bad thing.
I would really like Olimar, Ridley, Sami, Sonic if Possible, and Mike Anderson and/or the ST Falcon from Battleclash and Metal Combat (this no longer seems absurd).

It depends on if they are just throwing all characters in to make people happy, or only including characters they can come up with original ideas and move sets for.
On my tally I do not count Shiek and Zelda as seperate characters. I believe my count is up to 18/19, I will recount mine...to make sure.

Unlikely, third-party, not going to happen, etc but: Gunstar Red and Blue. Future or regular version, I don't care.

I'd rather original characters with unique movesets than characters thrown in to please fans, myself included.
I'm actually looking forward to trying this pokeman trainer...

With the unveiling of Pokemon Trainer I remembered two very unlikely, but possible, characters.
The first is the Mii! Here's how it could work. You know how in Wario Ware Smooth Moves you assigned a Mii on a save file along with a name, same way with the online portion of Mario Strikers? Well, in Brawl when you start a new save file the game asks you to select a Mii and put your name in. The unlock able Mii character is then based on the Mii you assigned on your save file. It could work...
The second character are the Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents! While I still see them being assist trophies (my bet is that they won't appear at all ) they could have all three members at the same time on screen, while you control the lead cheerleader. The other two could help out executing attacks and the Final Smash would consist of the three of them doing one massive attack!
Its all wishful thinking, but the Pokemon Trainer opens up opportunities for weird and unique characters like the two I mentioned.
EDIT: Oh I just thought of a Final Smash Attack for the EBA/Ouendan. When they pick up the Smash ball you hear lots of people clapping and chanting "EBA". As they do the EBA are filled with the energy of cheering, music and dancing. When they are completely charged they release a massive beam of energy, like the one that destroyed the aliens at the end of the final stage of EBA.
Right now it sounds exactly like Samus's Final Smash, but they could alter it so that its pure EBA.

"The first is the Mii!"
I'd rather they use the Animal Crossing main character and use your Mii head with it...It'd kill two birds with one stone...

Bill: that could work Mii and Animal Crossing combined.
I personally want the Wire Frame characters to be Miis now instead. I don't mind if that means that I can't play as a Mii...because being attacked by 100s of Miis would be the coolest thing ever.

Little Mac. Ridley or that Damned Boost Guardian from hell that took me 1hr+ to kill him(and he's a mini boss oh joy!) from MP2. Metroid needs more Characters there...2 samus it's ok but come on, you can do better than that! Yes I'm hyping myself up for MP3 with MP2 I never played it, shame on me I know...good game BTW. Sonic. Mega Man.

I've been thinking. . . The Animal Crossing player character has an alright move-set built in. My quick ideas include: shovel whack, The bug net might be similar or perhaps you briefly catch your opponent and fling them out, Grab with fishing pole (like Link's hookshot), stun with wardrobe change, might have something like a tree sprouting up in front of them, possibly throw letters for a weak ranged attack, or instead you could pull furniture and the like out or your pockets to throw. . . and let us not forget the Axe.
C'mon Animal Crossing player character!

I don't like an Animal Crossing character, but I will play your game and come up with moves.
1)Shovel Dig, like Donkey Kongs Smash into the ground, but you can leave the hole and people can accidentally fall in...it goes away after time. 2)Costume Change: Allows you to look like another character in battle.
Ok, I just can't do it...can't think of really great Animal Crossing specific moves.

What about an "I want this item" thead? Because I'd propose a Strikers Charged ball, each time someone gets hit by it its charge increases and the next hit does more damage but it bounces more wildly after the hit increasing the chance of it flying off the stage.

The animal crossing characters will either be Resetti or Crook's Niece and Nephew. Moves: B - Bee Shot ^B - Cast/Fishing Pole <>B - Axe Swing \/B - Dig/Shovel
That's all the tools in the game used effectively. Not very creative, but it works for specials.

From M&L:Partners in Time. The old and Young evil people combination. You know the one where the young one rides on the back of the old one and the old one can use its cane and the young one uses a blaster.

My little brother was playing Super Metroid a few days ago and pointed out to me that there was a living Chozo in Super Metroid. But the Super Metroid kills it by the time you reach it, amazing huh? The Chozo race is still alive I know it!
Anyway, wouldn't it be awesome to be able to play as a Chozo? And not one of those evil statues or ghosts, but the real deal!
Sounds awesome to me, though I would expect it to fight like ZSS. They trained her after all correct? But maybe not, maybe her style became all her own after the years of being alone fighting pirates on Zebes and so on.

That's actually a Torizo Caterkiller.
It's not a real Chozo

Chieftain would rock hard, but I see J being the main agent in Brawl, if they decide to include them of course.

In the words of Han Solo, "Boba Fett? Where?" And since Snake gets a stage, all third party characters should, so Boba Fett's should be the Sarlacc pit.

Sorry for bumping the thread but I had a weird idea last night...
What if Ryu Hayabusa (from the Ninja Gaiden series) was chosen to represent Tecmo in Brawl?
If you analyze it Ryu is far worthy to be in Brawl than Snake is: - There are three Ninja Gaiden games on the NES - The SNES features the remakes of said games - Ninja Gaiden 1 is already available for the VC - In Super Swing Golf 2 you can dress up your character as Ryu
And most important of all... - There's a brand new Ninja Gaiden game that is going to be a Nintendo exclusive
Ryu is Tecmo's main mascot and even though he has appeared on the XBOX, 360 and PS3 he's never been associated to one platform or company, making his appearance in Brawl more logical than Snake's.
In fact, at the risk of sounding stupid, Ninja Gaiden DS could be Tecmo's end of the deal for letting Ryu in the game...
