Title: Darkness or Resistance??
Post by: ryancoke on July 30, 2007, 07:21:15 AM
Hey guys. I was looking at either picking up Resistance or Darkness for PS3. I have never played either and both look pretty darn good. I can't decide which one and I was hoping somebody could help me a little. I prefer the methodical "thinking-man's" FPS like Halflife rather than the "run-n-gun" unreal tournament style. I think Resistance might be a little more of the "run-n-gun" type but I was hoping somebody could let me know for sure. Any thoughts about which I would like more?
Thanks in advance

I have never played Darkness, but resistance was extremely dissapointing to me. The game is very linear with repetitive enemy designs (that remind me of the enemies in Halo).

I have played Resistance and a demo of The Darkness (on the 360). The Darkness has that 'next gen' sheen to it while Resistance is clean but nothing special. There is no multi-player to Darkness, while Resistance just got new maps for online play (and offline too?).
Its difficult to say that the Darkness is a 'thinking man' game, but more so than Resistance. There are some extra ways to play. For example, in the demo there is a room with a couple of guys in it. You have 3 choices: send a darkling in, bust down the door and pop them in the head, or go around to the other side, shoot your 'snake arm' into the verntilation and sneak attack them after knocking out the power. That third one is not obvious so it pays to look around.
The levels I played were also extremely linear. 'Do this before that' kind of stuff. And not exactly a knock to the game, but the main character's voice in no way matches up to the voice in my head whenever I read the comic.

Cool, thanks guys. I downloaded the demo to Resistance last night and i thought it was pretty cool. It definately felt like call of duty with aliens. I wish there was a demo for Darkness on the PS store. Maybe i'll just rent darkness. It sounds like it's pretty short.

can anybody tell me if Resistance can be played with 2 player split screen? If so can the 2 players play co-op story mode or death-match online?

Resistance offline is a load of trash. Online on the other hand...wow. I was playing 20 vs 20 Team Deathmatch two days ago and it was intense! I haven't played The Darkness yet, I've heard bad things about it.

The real question here is: "Have you ever thought about firing a gun in a church?"

I'm quite opposed to the church but I would never fire a gun at it. Although I quite enjoyed robbing the church in Postal2

To the two Resistance questions yes and yes, I believe its 2 player co-op and 4 player versus. I agree with the Resistance comments that its a linear WW2 shooter with aliens. I've played darkness and I'm not really a big fan of it, it reminded me a lot of Prey, the running on walls via gravity strips were cool and it had some interesting ideas but I thought it was a bad gimmick for FPSes. Well I don't regret Resistance since I got it from Amazon at 39.99 new, I would wait for a price drop on Darkness or say screw it and get Bioshock instead since that looks very interesting.

Two player co-op is the only way I've played Resistance. And that church scene is so blown out of proportion. I didn't even really think about the location at the time. Its not like there are choir boys running around.

Is Bioshock coming out for the PS3? I thought it was PC or 360 only. Edit: I'm right it's PC/360 exclusive. Which sort of stinks for me because I can't rent the PC version. Just put it on the list of games I'll at least rent when I get a 360 with the new revision, aka late next year... blah...

Bioshock is the only game coming out for Xbox360 and not PS3 that i'm jealous about. Although the way things get ported these days, I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up on PS3 eventually.

We'll see but with the PS3 struggling I wouldn't count on it.

We'll I decided to pick up resistance. I liked the demo and the online sounds pretty sweet. Based on the length of The Darkness, I think i'll just rent it. Thanks for the advice guys and gals
Edit: Wow, I just read that there is now a demo for "The Darkness" on the PSN store! What good timing! Now all I need is a demo for Rainbow Six Vegas and i'm good to go.

I just saw it, messaged Pale about it, and started downloading it. Another gig+ demo.
While I'm think about it anyone here is free to message me at Ceric.

Am I the only one that thinks it is kind of sad that us PS3 owners get excited for a demo?

Free gaming. I'm sure I be just as excited if they were on the Wii.
Anyway, Played all of the demo last night. Dual Analog stinks but we all knew that. My probably with the game was I think I spent more time trying to figure out where in the world I was suppose to be going then actually doing anything. Also the dark powers didn't always work consistently for me.

Dude, I got totally lost in the graveyard. I have no idea where to go. Pretty sad I found the controlls a little infuriating. I couldn't get the movement speed and acceleration to a setting that was good for me. It seemed really sluggish. Firing weapons with R2 + L2 is a little weird too. I haven't completed the demo yet but so far i'm glad I bought resistance instead!
