According to the latest rumors section of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Square-Enix will be bringing more remakes to Nintendo DS.

However, instead of bringing more Final Fantasy titles to the handheld, the company is switching focus to remaking games from the Dragon Quest series.

I like this rumor...

BUT WHERE'S MY VC DOWNLOADS SQUARE!!!?!?!? Argh.

And what's taking you so long with localizing DQ Swords, or getting FF:CB or even FF:RoF out?

Oh forget it. Square isn't putting anything on VC as long as they can get people to still buy the games for 30-50 bucks with a re-release.

(Which sucks cause I wanna see games like Chrono Trigger come out on VC already).

Yeah, I guess. I'm STILL puzzled as to why FF:RoF isn't out yet though.

... and I wonder if Nintendo can work out a deal to get SMRPG released on the VC at least.

Thankfully the ESRB has approved Super Mario RPG already with a rating for the VC so it's just a matter of time before it comes out.

I figured Nintendo wouldn't have a problem with releasing it on VC, kinda like how even though Rare was responsible for DKC and yet we got those games with relative ease.

Cool, I like Dragon Quest.
Wait, isn't that the GBC game where you have a team of four people that follow you around.

My friend lent it to me a long time ago and is apparently at a loss to where it is, so, luckely, it's mine for the time being.

I never trust EGM's rumors anymore, not since they got my hopes up by predicting a DS compilation of Mother and Earthbound that never came to be.

I thought SE had already announced, in a sort of round about way, that they were going to be doing DQ remakes/ports on the DS. They said something about wanting to remake or port a couple of the earlier games to the DS before they released IX. Now someone's listing it as a rumor. Umm... I think it's a littler better than a rumor when the developer has already said that they would like to do that.

Well if you can find a source that SE said they are definitely releasing the games then I guess it would be fair to remove the "rumor" mark. It's good to remember that just because a developer says they would "like to do" something doesn't mean it will happen.

I'd like to see 5-7, I don't really care about the others as I already own 4 and...well, I suppose a remake of the earlier ones might be welcome, but at the time of their release they required way too much grinding for my current tastes.

For anyone who has played these and VIII, how do they compare?  Because I found VIII to have WAY too much grinding, and even then the game was hard, making it very, VERY boring to me...But I love 2D RPGs anyway, and I would like to try and avoid these if they are like VIII in the grinding aspect... ;_;

Let's put it this way, I know that IV is all about the grind.  In fact, in part 3 of the game, you have to get like a million gold to pass the section and that is all about either killing monsters or selling enough of your own products in your shop, which ends up being just sitting there waiting for the next customer to show up.  Then after finishing that, you grind some more.

I always thought everyone knew that the second genre of the DQ games was grinding.

And the games are looking quite good at the moment, too.  I'm really excited to go back and play these... er, well...  IV anyway.  I remember playing the original on the NES.  Never touched V or VI, though.

So ummm... are any of these NOT grinds?

I thought the whole selling point of DQ is that it's a "hard, traditional" game, i.e. that you have to grind like mad and that just running through the dungeons won't net you enough experience to continue? RPGers seem to equal hard with levelling way too slowly and losing a lot of progress on death. Other people consider hard to mean situations requiring more skill to pass but I guess in RPGs you have to play the role of a guy who learns slowly...

All I know is, DQ was the worst gaming experience I ever had and is responsible for me skipping over pretty much all RPGs except Mario RPG which destroyed my phobia of RPGs.

I totally loved the first DQ.... If it was any of the first 3 DQs, I'd be more apt to buy it willy nilly but I have no idea what the series turned into later on.

i played DQ1 on the NES shortly after beating FF for the first time.

when i realized you had to open a menu to open a door, i stopped and never turned it back on.

i suspect that later games changed that...

It's been too long since I played DQ IV to give an accurate opinion, but at the time I had played Final Fantasy IV and had already decided that I would never touch Final Fantasy I again because of grinding, yet I still enjoyed DQ IV.

It definitely included grinding, but I only recall one area where I actually had to stop progressing and just wander around and level up for like an hour.  That said, a lot of content in the game hid grinding in a novel way for the time, which might not be so "novel" anymore.  Louieturkey mentions Taloon's chapter, where you have to earn a ton of Gold...but it was somewhat disguised by the novelty of running a store.

Damn RPGs.. even the talk of grinding makes me sick.

I replayed most of Chapter 1 on DQIV yesterday.  Impressions:

- There is some grinding in Chapter 1 but it's not bad.*   Unfortuantely some of the other chapters are worse.
- I hope they fix the menu system. Like somebody mentioned, you open a menu every time you want to talk.
- More importantly, smooth out the talking controls in general.  NPCs have a tendency to step away just as you talk to them.
- I still love how the story works (there are four chapters that tell the stories of the various characters that make up your total party in chapter 5) but I hope they improve the localization - it's not Engrish, but it's bland.
- In chapter 5, your team goes on auto-pilot.  You choose their strategy, but there's only one character you can control directly. I liked this system a lot in 1992, but who knows if it has held up over time?
- I like how death works - you lose some gold and are sent back to the last church you saved at, but you don't lose your experience or items.

* Obviously, everyone has different opinions on how much grinding is acceptable.  Here's a rundown of my playtime last night:

5 minutes - Explored Burland Castle Town.
10 minutes - Explored surrounding area, gained a level, died.
20 minutes - Made it through a small cave leading to Izmit Village.
30 minutes - Pumped everyone in Izmit for info, cleared out the remaining bit of the first cave.
45 minutes - Returned to Burland Castle Town and brought a woman back to Izmit Village. (Around Level 3)
60 minutes - Found a hidden cave where a key item is, got the item and died exploring more of the cave.
75 minutes - Explored the rest of the cave and added an Uncontrolled Assistant to my party.
80 minutes - Made my first foray into the final castle, returned to Izmit for more supplies. (Around Level 5)
95 minutes - Made it through the castle to the boss, died.
2 hours - Made two more runs to the boss, died the first time, should have won the second time, but forgot to heal my Assistant before the battle and he got wiped out in the first round. (Around Level 7 or 8)

Personally, I enjoyed playing a hard RPG for a change.  I should have won that last battle, but I got anxious and forgot to heal before starting.  The grinding is a bit worse in Chapter 2, because the Princess is tough as nails, but her two sidekicks are pansies that die at the drop of the hat.
