Title: WiiWare!
Post by: Requiem on July 08, 2007, 06:47:25 PM
I am honestly SHOCKED and APPALLED at you so called "Nintendo Fans." Why hasn't anyone posted this? Even you NWR?

Pshhh....

But seriously, here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:

Nintendo's WiiWare Paves the Way for Fresh Games, Cool Consumer Experiences

Quote

The search for the next ingeniously ground-breaking video game has begun. At a private developers conference this week, Nintendo announced the introduction of WiiWare, a game-creation service that will allow developers large and small to create new downloadable video game content for sale by Nintendo through the Wii Shop Channel of the hot Wii home video game system. WiiWare paves the way for smaller, more creative games to make their way to the public at lower prices, without any inventory risk to developers. The first WiiWare content will launch in early 2008.

This is by far the greatest news we've heard this year. This just bleeds potential.

God, the WoW forumjs had me in a vicegrip for 2+ years. I wouldn't want to go there, but I was addicted and my fingers would simply tap out the url of their own accord, plunging me tearfully, defeatededly, screaming and kicking into a hellish nirvana of flames and posts and speculations and complaints and blues and constantly rfreshing the same page over and over and OVER hoping someone would post something new, ANYTHING NEW, ANYTHING ANYTHING!!!

... I weep for my brain cells killed by the WoW community forums.

I was Sallow, lvl 60 Undead Warlock, Legionnaire of the Horde, and hander-out of free 6 slot bags for low level Tauren! I played on Shadowsong since the very launch of the game. And I had NO alts.

Nice, I was *shock* Mashiro, level 70 Nighe Elf Hunter of Smolderthorn. I started playing January '06 and quit last month with the only notable alt being a 53 druid that I got tired of.

WoW was fun but I broke away from it's hypnotic hold on me and now I get called loser for not playing from my friend haha. Good times.

Umm... don't take this the wrong way, but there are WAAAAAAYYYY too many Night Elf Hunters out there. Especially FEMALE NE Hunters. I should know. My roommate is one.

Lol, it's cool. I was a male NE. NEs get a lot of slack but I love ranged fighter type classes in pretty much any MMO and well...dwarfs just aren't my style.

Post by: Kairon on July 08, 2007, 07:53:20 PM
That's cool. Male NE's are almost as rare as female dwarves.

But the reason I'm complaining is that, as a die hard hordie... I want to kill something different every once in awhile you know?

I completely understand, after a while it gets tiresome mowing down the same race. Especially as a warlock =)

Hahahahaha....

I remember my dormmate being umbilically attached to his computer because of that game. Everytime I brought back some girls to the dorm to get drunk or what not, he wouldn't pay them any attention and continue jabbering on about some giant f*&#ing dragon. It didn't piss me off much, but it turned off the girls AND THAT pissed me off.

We almost got into it at one point because I told him to turn that sh@t off for a night (A FRIDAY NIGHT, sanctity among college students ). He went on some rant arguing about how he didn't bitch about what I was doing, and told me to mind my own business. I wasn't the one to talk to him about his addiction and I didn't want to get into it, so I dipped.

The next f#$*ing night I'm getting trashed down the hall, and he's still playing his game. I didn't care, I was down the hall, but what was messed up is that a girl I was getting to know stumbles into my room looking for me and instead of trying to help her, he takes advantage of her! I didn't know this of course, until I walked up to my room and noticed the door was lock, at which point I took out my key and opened it. I saw her butt-naked in the bed, and this motherf@cker playing WOW! What's even more messed up is the next night she's trying to be all feely and touchy with me and I'm like "Yo! You just f#cked my roommate!" And she had no recollection of it!

So....as you can tell, I hate that game.

I don't hate the game. I just hate the people who sell their souls to it.

I swear, my roommate has said he'd "quit" WoW like, 12 times, and 12 times he's ended up hopping back in. I swear, I LOVE Blizzard. I'm a friggin' Blizzared fanboi. But I could care less if all the WoW servers up and exploded tomorrow or something... except that my little bro still plays WoW. But he's cool. He's a roleplayer.

... I swear, I'm never going to make MMOs because as much as I LOVE the experiences that genre can provide, I DESPISE the people who somehow gravitate towards them.

And Requiem, that is a horrible story.

Dude...

My roommate finally quit towards the end of the year. Horray, right? WRONG! This kid is addicted to games, but not in a good way; in the WORST way. He started playing that BattleField game religiously, and it was MUCH worse. He'll start yelling out of nowhere "DIE YOU TERRORIST MUSLIM SON OF BITCH!" unaware that I am in fact a Muslim (maybe not the best, but are you a good _____?) and that really offends me, or that I am trying to study or relax and watch some T.V.

I swear I was about to *&#$ him up!

That's probably one of the worst stories relating to WoW I have ever heard Requiem.

I don't hate the game either but it's very very boring to me now. I got a good run out of it though so I can't complain.

Edit: Wow I posted this only reading the first part of the story which was bad enough. Karion's advice below sounds good, I would try and get a new roommate . . . and maybe suggest to counselors that your current one seems unstable.

Dude, your roommate is the dregs of humanity.

... it's like an abusive relationship, is there no way to get another room/roomate?

No. I definitely tried.

I learned to live with it. I left the room as often as possible; studying here, partying there. I'm just glad it's over.

Now it's a new year and I have a nice apartment about 30 seconds from campus with my brother of all people (going to graduate school), so it's all good.

Glad to hear things are better now.

After having experiences like that, you are SOOO forgiven for having missed the two threads we already had about WiiWare.

So I have a huge question about WiiWare that I don't know if has been answered yet, but will these games be potentially online multiplayer?

And if so, then what would stop someone from taking an established game - for example, Ice Hockey on the NES - and retrofitting it with online capability?  I understand licensing and IP protection would be a hurdle, but what would stop someone from making an almost carbon copy of a game, or even copy the game outright, and make it online?

Seems like a potential loophole if all Nintendo says needs to be done is to develop it and secure an ESRB rating.  Is there anywhere in that equation where someone comes in and squashes a game for using IPs?  I haven't read much on the matter so I'm assuming there are safegaurds like that in place.

But the mind boggles and even goggles at the mere potential if something like this were true.  I could see someone making Goldeneye Online, for example.  Remaking NES classics with online.  Hell, the 3D Chrono Trigger from a few years ago could be released.

Even if all the IP stuff isn't possible, are online multiplayer games possible?  That is what I'm most interested in at this point.  Although all the information I'm getting seems to point toward games played at home with other players.

Strell:  I think they be covered by the same laws as media based games.  WiiWare is suppose to be able to do everything that a Wii Game can.
Requiem:  Your old roomate has priority issues.  I don't know your brother but I know I cramp my Lil Bro's style.

I played the WoW Beta and found it just repetative (and I enjoy PSO, even single player.)  I then tried the FF one because I had some friends on it.  Didn't take.  I haven't been that much into an MMO like thing since I was playing a good MUD when AOL was the internet an by the hour.

My bro's cool as hell. For example, I'm not 21 yet, but he hooked it up with legit IDs and even put on my glasses when he took the pictures at the DVM! All I had to do was pay for both ID's.
