Title: The State of NEBRASKA (all NE discussion goes here!)
Post by: decoyman on July 07, 2007, 12:44:42 PM
Hello everyone.
As of earlier this week, my wife and I have finished our cross-country move back to my homeland: NEBRASKA. Coming from the well-known tourist destination of Monterey, California, the question on most peoples' minds is: WHY?? Well, this topic has been engineered to answer that question, and more. So, if you have any questions about Nebraska, ask here and I'll do my best to answer promptly.
Oh, and if there are no questions about Nebraska, I may just fill this thread with my own meandering thoughts on this fine state. And if you are wondering, I AM PERFECTLY CAPABLE OF SUPPLYING THESE MEANDERING THOUGHTS IN GENEROUS, EVEN OVERWHELMING, SUPPLY.
So, my first point of discussion: "Nebraska: YAY!"
Nebraska is worthy of a fully-capped "YAY" because my family is here. It is also pretty inexpensive to live here too. The people here are very friendly and down-to-earth (sometimes I talk with people on the street – "Hey, Happy 4th of July, guy I don't know!" – and also in the grocery store – "Hmm, have you ever tried pickled beets?"). I also like Nebraska because there are four real seasons (this alone could—and may well should—be expanded into a whole topic of its own: "How the existence of four "real" seasons (winter spring summer fall) promotes awareness of one's own life cycle, thus affecting the dispositions/outlooks of people who reside in such a location as Nebraska"). Lincoln, NE, is one of my favorite towns because it's a university town which draws people from all over the world. I also like that even the big cities in NE have the small-town vibe, while retaining big-city amenities (like malls, theater, indie film venues, local music scene, cool coffee shops, authentic foreign restaurants, oh, I could go on and on).
Ok! That should do it. What do YOU think of Nebraska? Have you been to Nebraska (driving through does not count! ). Or is there anything you want to know about Nebraska? I'll help!
P.S. – If you have any negative things to say about Nebraska, you are wrong, so kindly take your ideas elsewhere

Why does all the corn in Kansas lean north? Because Nebraska sucks
Haha just kidding, never been there but have driven past once or twice. I hear Omaha is a nice town.

I drove through Nebraska once; it was the longest eight hours of my life. Seriously, this damn state is too long. It's worth than driving north/south through Illinois. However, I won a blue-assed baboon at a crane game at a Pizza Hut; so I guess the state's not all bad.

Whoa whoa whoa, take it outside there, fella. This isn't the "Midwestern States and Their Many Jokes About Each Other" thread, this is the regular ol' "State of NE" thread. Though I could name off plenty of those jokes if I were so inclined...
But you're right about Omaha being a nice town

My girlfriend is from Omaha. I like how you have to briefly drive outside of the state to get from the airport to the city.
And it sounds like vudu needs to take a drive through west Texas - take the 20 from Ft. Worth to El Paso. Then tell me what you think of Nebraska.

I fly to Texas, thank you very much. I don't want to touch the ground of any part of that state that isn't Austin.

Ah, yes, it's true: Carter Lake, IA. Let me explain, Bloodworth... see, Nebraskans enjoy the act of sharing, and that extends to sharing our visitors with other states. Sometimes bizzarely-drawn state boundaries can be a positive thing.

It looks like I'll be going to Omaha, Nebraska in Aug. Will decoyman meet me at the border with cake and pie? Stay tuned to find out...

All you Americans with your "driving across this state sucks" talk need to drive across Canada. There's only like six cities in the entire country with a population over a million and the physical country is bigger than the US.

4 Seasons suck, I'd rather be back in Tampa Bay, Florida where there are two seasons a year; Summer and Summer*2.

In my experience, Wyoming is the worst state to drive across.

What's a NEBRASKA?

Should we make a thread for all of the states? Because OHIO also has four (4) seasons. Plus, we're the heart of America. "The Heartland" Also known as The North Coast. Or The Buckeye State. The Dog Pound is reserved for Cleveland.
YAY Ohio!
And ever since we need a passport to cross into Canada, they have been kicked out of the North America club. Same for Mexico.

I don't think you *technically* need a passport to get into Canada - I thought you just needed one to get back into the US...

Frommers says both ways. Oh well, I at least got my trip to the Falls in, don't need to see it again.

Speak for yourself. The drive from Calgary to Vancouver is breathtaking..

IceCold....I wish I could see that.
I've never been to Vancouver, but it seems like my type of place. Jazz bars everywhere; the ability to do whatever you want pretty much whenever you want, be it snowboarding or going on a cruise; delicious smokable......plants; beer served in a bigger glass; casinos; a country where football (the real football) is played more frequently than baseball, and nature in general. I was thinking if I had to live anywhere in the world, it would be in the mountains right next to the ocean/sea. And BC pretty much fits the bill.
What other places fit the bill? Greece, I guess. Lebanon. Peru. Japan. Hawaii. Um....I'm all out.....

Uh... Florida's not too shabby?
In any case, it's better than Oregon.

As for UB and your visit to this excellent but unappreciated state... The baking starts tonight!

What can I say... We don't mess around here in Nebraska.
P.S. – Fun fact of the day: Nebraska's state bird is the Western Meadowlark. "The more you know!"

Two batches of cupcakes (mocha and strawberry, yum), and... uh, does lasagna count?

If you count lasagna as cake or pie, I'm not too sure I want to try your cupcakes...

I'm leaving very soon. It's a nine hour and one min drive (via MapQuest). We'll probably stop a couple of times, but you'd better be ready!
Omaha ain't ready for me.

My, I've been slacking on the Nebraska updates, and neglecting a soon-to-be-visiting guest of the state!
Alright, here's some new info. Cupcakes are gone, sorry. Lasagne is as well (yes, it counts as "pie" - hey, you didn't say the cakes or pies had to be sweet or savory!). A pile of chocolate chip "cakes" (of the flat/miniature variety) and a batch of ice cream (ok, it's neither cake nor pie, but it's goo-ood) have both been made and promptly consumed.
So... basically I've got Lil Debbie stuff I'll pick up on the way to the border. Take it or leave it.
Fun Nebraska fact-of-the-day: What do Arbor Day, Kool-Aid and the Reuben sandwich all have in common? They all found their starts in Nebraska! Hooray!
Unfortunate Nebraska fact-of-the-day: It's like 97 degrees here today, and I biked to work. I grew weak in California. Weak to heat!

I'm about 100 miles away from the border, just now coming into Iowa. I'll be coming in on I-80 West. It's been a long drive, so they better be tasty Little Debbies (soundslike something Bill would say)...

... are you posting from your car?

I was... You may notice that I'm using my mobile Bob account... I'm stuck mobile browsing for now (could browse on my DS, but they want $5/day for that).
Scary thing is that I posted that *while* driving.
Anywhoo, so far, Nebraska ain't all some people would have you believe. No one met me at the border with Little Debbies (snack cakes or hot young girls). In fact, the only thing that met me at the border was rain and thunder.
Saw a game store I hope to get to check out tommrow though...

Unfortunately, in a frenzy to prove the stereotype that Nebraskans (and midwesterners in general) are hard workers, I was still at work while you were probably passing over the border.
Also, I ate your Lil' Debbies snacks.
Finally, I would apologize for the thunderstorm's unfriendly welcome, but these forces of nature recognize no state law or allegiance – they are rebels and unaffiliated with the state of Nebraska. You can take this issue up w/ Mother Nature™ if you'd like, but I can't seem to locate her web address...

I have started to warm up to Nebraska. There's a store called "Gamers" here... I like it. They had boxed Intellivision games for 94 cents.
Apparently, there are 3 here in Omaha... I need to find the other two...

I wouldn't say that makes us bad people, PartyBear... I prefer to think of it as evidence of opportunism. You know, when things don't go to plan, you make the best of it.
