Title: Rumor: Sega Sammy says PS3 price drop likely
Post by: Mashiro on July 04, 2007, 09:34:00 PM
From The Magic Box:

"Sega Sammy's corporate director Masanao Maeda mentioned that Sony is likely to have a price drop for PS3 before the end of the year to increase demand of its flagship console."

It would make sense seeing as PS3 isn't performing as well as Sony had hoped but I wonder if they can afford it. Aren't they already losing tons of money per system sold due to the manufacturing costs?

Maybe by the time the price drop occurs they may not be losing as much money (or perhaps only lose as much as they are now).

True that could be the case.

I heard that blu-ray diode prices dropped drastically, so maybe that's a good 50 to 80 dollars of the cost that has evaporated away. Plus, getting rid of the EE chip helps reduce cost too.

It will help reduce buyers as well, two birds with one stone!

Getting rid of the blu-ray drive would certainly help matters.

Well Sony will have to do something.  At this point they are going to need to drop the price just to survive this generation...even if it means larger losses per console sold.  After all, if nobody buys the system for this year then they are screwed this generation, and they won't recover.  Which means going into next generation with a failure shows 3rd parties you are not indestructible...see what that did to Nintendo with the Gamecube.  A pretty dangerous place to be.

A price drop will happen.  Probably around Christmas time, so that early adopters don't feel too screwed.

I agree.  As of right now the only reason I get a PS3 is to replace my PS2 that has been broken for the last half a year.  I think a lot of people in my situation would if the 60gig version was $300-$350 with full backward compatibility.  I won't touch a PSGimped for the same price as a always been gimped 360.

I would be surprised if someone thought it WASN'T likely at this point!

Well I wonder if Sony did remove the EE chip and just got rid of backwards compatiability would it be able to help with the overheating problem with Blu-Ray movies?

Sony may look at it as a redesign.  Perhaps even keep the EE chip and everything in the 60Gig package for the same price, up perhaps include a larger HD.

Then remove the EE in the lower end model for a good price cut.  I dunno, it that would even really help the price that much.

How bad would it look of Sony took a price cut on the PS3 and MS kept the 360 at the same price?

The only thing the EE chip will do is force Sony to go to the software emulation route for the Backwards Compatibility, the only reason why the PS3 overheats during Blu-Ray movies is because the disc has to spin FASTER during movie playback and thus we get the classic equation of faster moving parts = more heat produced.

Well for a redesign to make it cheaper I doubt it will be cosmetic but probably the EE chip will be cut or they can always go the "cheap parts" tricks that they pulled off with the PS2 and got away with it. The only problem with adding a bigger HD is that its such a waste since any standard SATA hard drive will fit in the PS3 you just only have to worry about matching the RPM so there won't be any performance issues.

Kairon is actually pretty close to the price factor. As of May or June, blue diodes were down to just $8/bulk. That doesn't include the whole drive, but it is still apparently a sharp cut. HD players of all kinds are going to become cheaper fairly soon.

By the fall, Sony could definitely lower the price by $100 and still not lose as much as they have been. At that point, what really holds the price up is the Cell and/or RSX. Nothing but more time and an eventual die shrink (if possible in RSX's case) is going to help there.

You know what, Microsoft should just sit there and relax.  PS3 still doesn't have any real good games to buy the system for compared to the 360.  It would be interesting to see how 3rd parties align their projects in the next few years.  Sony may endure what Nintendo endured with the Gamecube, projects being cancelled and multiplatform games being shunned on their system.

I have to say on the EE chip with the volume they have been getting and the manafacturing tweaks I'm sure they made they must be dirt cheap by know.  I mean barely over the material to make them cheap.

I don't think MS will just sit back and relax on a PS3 price drop, though.  There are still some 100 million undecided users out there, most of whom played a Sony console last generation...not to mention that Wii continues to dominate all.

MS may not follow with an immediate price cut of its own, but it won't wait for very long either.

I may buy a PS3 for Uncharted and Assassin's creed if they get the price down to $300.

Rumor: Plenty of PS3s will be available at retail this holiday season compared to last year.

Well Xbox 360 got down to a price closer to $300 for the premium package with Wifi support I would buy one.  As it would be a nice deal.  If Microsoft could release a version of the Xbox 360 for $250-$275  I think they would have a chance to become the Mass market leader.  And they would force Nintendo into a price drop.  Perhaps around $199.99

This holiday season will be interesting to see how the three big handle their hardware sales.

I might get a PS3 in a few years, when it's $300.00 max, with a chip that plays import games and import BRD (if I ever buy these).
Because, well, I still like Final Fantasy so I kinda wanna play FF XIII...*ashamed*

Yeah, but then I have to put $300 into my PC or buy a red ring of death

Edit: Oh, and CAG has scans of a circuit city ad showing the PS3 down $100.

On one hand, Sega is dumb. On the other hand, Sony is at least as dumb so maybe Sega can understand their logic?
