Title: Jeebus... This sucks...
Post by: Uncle Bob on June 14, 2007, 03:54:13 PM
It stormed here today. There's a huge half a tree on the front of my new house, power is off in half the town (my half) and it's really frickin' hot. And I can't play Wii.

Well at least the half of the tree didn't go through the house. And at least it's summer. Last fall we had a big power outage and it was a cold fall this year (snow in November which pretty much never happens here). I can live without air conditioning but without heat is much worse.
This still sucks but all things considering this is best possible scenario for having a big tree branch fall off on your property and having no power.

Yeah, all things considered, we were pretty lucky.
Until I saw how much it cost just to get the tree limb removed...
Not to mention fixing the damage to the house and getting the other half of the tree removed as well.

When they send you a bill for removing the tree, send them a bill for the firewood.

UncleBob, please use this image instead of above so Bloodworth doesn't hunt you down. Though I don't know who is doing that these days. Also this was done with the beta of my forum resizer tool
Glad their was extensive damage done to your new home.

Your home insurance won't cover it?

They will, after the deductible... which is just about as much as the cost of getting everything fixed...

I've seen this happen before, just about once a year to someone I know. We get a lot of those strong flash storms around my home town. Let me be the first to say that trees are much bigger looking once they've fallen over. After every storm at my house, several branches would have fallen down, and we'd have to throw them in a field we had, for lack of anything to do with them. We were lucky not to have any trees growing close enough to our house for anything to hit them, though.

That's a bummer. I remember in 2005 after Wilma when we lost power for a full week. I decided to teach myself piano, and was quite dedicated without the electronic distractions. I would probably be better off not owning any electronics...
Ah well.
Hope it works out well. Paying for the damage caused to our roof done by just wind was bad enough; can't imagine the damage done by a fallen tree in addition to that.

We had a tree fall through a fence and onto are car and the insurance said it was a "Act of God" and didn't cover it. Well at least thats not happenning.

Posting from a laptop?
Anyway, that sucks. We had about half of a big old maple fall off during a huge storm once. Fortunately it fell into the road, so the roadcrew had to clean it up for us. The only damage was a very mangled speed limit sign in our yard (county's expense) which was very lucky because the neighbor had her car parked under that tree just the day before.
Edit: the other half of the tree lived for a few years after that, but it died slowly, so we did have to pay to cut it down because it probably would have enventually fallen into the house.

Oh my giddy aunt.
It looks like a clean cut from that picture though. You probably could save the tree, the environment, the world, and your children's future if you wanted to.

No way. That tree has been substantially weakened structurally. Even if it could survive the trauma, which is unlikely, there's now a higher risk of it falling down.

Exactly. We spoke with two different "experts" who both agreed, the tree has to come down.
