Well, if it wasn't for that third line, I was sure the answer would be Playstation 3 but I'm not sure.

I've heard a similar one. The answer to that was also, coffin, but I said manure.
It was something like, "You don't want it. When you buy it, you don't use it. The user doesn't see it." It was something like that. Everyone laughed when I said manure, but I showed them by proving my correctness.

EDIT 2: Stabby's answer doesn't work, since it asks for an object and a policy doesn't count as an object, or so I think.

I think he sold his soul for money (to Milhouse), and then bought that with the cash from comic book guy. I think there were pogs involved or Alf or something.

No, no. It was Milhouse who later sells Bart's soul to the comic book guy for Alf pogs. "Alf's back. In pog form." I'm pretty sure Bart uses his money for the sponge dinosaurs.

Alright, I have a riddle.

There is a garage with three light bulbs on the ceiling inside, outside of the garage in a separate room are three light switches but you do not know which switch turns on which light bulb in the garage.
How do you figure out what switches turn on each light?
You are only allowed to leave the switch room to goto the garage once and you cannot see inside the garage from where the switches are positioned.

Remember you can only goto and enter the garage one time, so use your noggin!

Follow the wires?
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: that Baby guy on June 21, 2007, 06:48:44 AM
Aren't Nixons afraid of wires?

There are some technical answers that would work, but I don't know if you'd accept them.  One such answer:  Turn on a single light, go to the garage, see which light correlates to the switch, then remove a different light bulb, then go back to the switches, and turning off the first, while turning on another.  Then take a glance at your power meter to see how much electricity is being used, then turn on the last one, and if the meter goes up, the last one controls the last light bulb that is plugged in, while if it stays the same, the last switch is the for the light you took out.  I doubt that's the answer, though.

From the switch room to the garage, that is as far as you need to go, but you can only go once. You will not be tearing out walls to follow wires either. Its alot more simple that you might think, and I didn't get it at first cause I thought there was some sort of trick answer or something, but there wasn't
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: ShyGuy on June 21, 2007, 07:05:04 AM
Go into the garage, unscrew a lightbulb, go into the room, flip two switches and hope the odds are in your favor.
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 21, 2007, 07:30:46 AM
but how would you know? you can only go into the garage once. If you went in there first, you couldn't find out which is which afterwards.

Ask whoever's being a jerk and not letting you go into the garage multiple times to flip the switches for you while you go in to look at the lights.

Post by: Zach on June 21, 2007, 07:48:25 PM
Oooh I know I know!!!

(spoilered incase anyone else still wants to figure it out)
Turn one switch on, wait 5 minutes

turn second switch on, go immediately to garage

feel the bulbs.  the one that is on and hot goes to the first switch you turned on.  The one that is on but cool goes to the second switch you turn on.  The one that is off goes to the switch you did not touch.

new riddle
When does 11 + 2 = 1

Good job Zach, that sounds good to me. Of course, other think outside the box answers like tracing the wiring weren't allowed, so who knows?
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: Zach on June 21, 2007, 08:38:25 PM
Well even if it is not "the answer" its what Im sticking with.  It fits the paramaters of the question.  no need for any major construction, or destruction, and all it uses is  normal human senses.  Uses nothing that is not given in the question.

It actually didnt take me very long to figure out (only about 5-10 minutes, if that); BNM just happened to stumble into my area of expertise.  I have an engineer's mind, all of the abstract questions in this thread so far have left me absolutely clueless, but I excel in concrete questions where I am given a problem with certain rules, and I have to find a solution.
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 22, 2007, 04:30:25 AM
that answer works, its not the exact answer that i was given, but it the exact same process. The only difference is that they only allowed one light to be on, but I guess I didn't actually type that into the riddle. But anyway, good job.

btw, my guess at your riddle is:

when its a bakers dozen?
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: Requiem on June 22, 2007, 05:43:32 AM
Zach, how would that work?

I think you should revise yours. For instance, you turn on a bulb for 5 minutes then turn it off, then flick another switch and head into the garage. It's alot easier to tell which is hot and which is cool when they are both off.

Light bulbs heat up quick.

P.S. I agree with BnM
Title: RE: Duuuuna na na, na nu, na na: RIDDLE TIME!
Post by: Zach on June 22, 2007, 07:06:21 AM
I guess something like that probably would work better requiem.  But assuming the garage is not far away, it is still pretty easy to compare and find out which one is hotter.

Anyway, not a bakers dozen.  My teacher gave us this riddle in high school and it left us absolutely stumped, I'll give a hint later today.  Apparantly, Kindergarden age children are more likely to answer this riddle correctly.

I have a little riddle:

There is a small green lily pad in a pond full of fish. Every day the small green lily pad doubles in size. It takes 30 days for the (formerly) small green lily pad to completely cover the pond full of (dead?) fish. On which day did the lily pad cover half of the pond?

Either that's a huge pond or that lily pad started off microscopic. 1/(2^30) of the pond.

No, no and no. Well if I tell you what the hole is it would give it away, but let's just say that this particular hole is intended solely for the answer to the riddle. You could but wouldn't go sticking anything else in there.

It's a key, people. It shouldn't have been this hard to get.  I should have ckecked this thread awhile ago.

Keyhole, when you pull the key out of the hole it gets longer and when you jerk the key, you pop the lock. Many women wore keys on a necklace that went between their breasts or kept them there for safe keeping.

Nope still haven't seen the right answer, another clue perhaps...in usage it is actually placed between a woman's breasts, so think of something that is almost always exclusively 'worn' in that fashion. It's not something that can be used anywhere else in practice. It doesn't have to be a woman's breasts either...a man could place it in the same way there's just nothing really holding it in position as effectively.

This is a pretty hard riddle, I usually just mull riddles of this calibre over when I'm driving to Uni and whatnot.

Is it military dog tags?

It fits between breasts, would fit into any hole, will get longer when you break the chain, but in order to do that, you need to jerk it off the person's neck.

Or perhaps a life vest? Those inflate when you jerk the valves on them and they technically fit between breasts.

This riddle fails because if you jerk hard on a seat belt it stops because it thinks you're in a crash.  Slow, even movements work best.

No, a seatbelts designed to function when you are in a crash. Therefore its best use is exhibited when it is jerked hard.

Actually they do, if your riding in a car that was built after 1973....
I'm sure he's talking about the ones that come across the chest and not the lap belts you would find in an older car.
But shouldn't the riddle have said that "it fits perfectly into a slot" and not a hole, cause its definately more of a slot than a hole.

Plus it's the buckle that goes into the slot, not the belt. It's like having the answer be an arm and the clue being "you can wear a glove on it"

Just because part of the seat belt disappears into a slot in the wall doesn't mean it isn't still the same length.

Yep, I figured that was an easy one.

Let's say you've got a vending machine that sells either Coke or Pepsi.  There are three buttons on the machine.  Pressing one will get you a Coke, another will get you a Pepsi, and another will give you one of the two at random, just for fun.  One day some joker rearranges the labels on the buttons so they're all wrong.  You don't really remember which is which, you're too lazy to open up the machine and tinker with it, and you're thirsty anyway.  How many drinks do you have to buy to figure out how to rearrange the labels?

Just one. Ok, so they're ALL wrong. So, I only need to buy 1. If I hit the pepsi button and get a pepsi, then that makes it the random button. I know the coke button is wrong, so I put the random one there. The one that was random, then becomes the coke.

Making the assumption all of the buttons are incorrect, the answer to this question is just one.

Press the button labeled random because we know that it cannot actually be random, and whatever it gives you is what that that button actually is.

If it gives you a pepsi, the button labeled pepsi must be coke, and the button labeled coke must be random.

If the random button gives you a coke, the button labeled coke must be pepsi and the button labeled pepsi must be Random.

its the only way everything will fit.

Edit: Almost thought I was beat out by TVman, he's got the right idea, he just hit the wrong button first.  In his scenario he hit the pepsi button and got a pepsi.  But what if you hit the pepsi button and get a coke?

Sometimes the best way to tackle these types of problems is to draw it out.  It helped me realize the scenario that I mentioned in the edit above (where you hit pepsi and get a coke) is impossible to solve.  The biggest part of this problem was picking up on the fact that all of the labels were false, and we both managed to do that.

1, hit pepsi button, if it's a pepsi drink it. if it's a coke smash the machine and drink what come out. All you really care about is your're thirsty. And If you're too lazy to open it than you would be too lazy to rearrenge the lables.
