Title: Whats the difference between......
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 11, 2007, 11:00:39 PM
an NTFS file system and a FAT file system?
I just want to know caus I finally got my computer up and running, and the only way I could do it this time was to format the HDD to a FAT system cause he XP disc is scratched on the NTSF.sys file that is necessary to install windows in a NTFS system.

FAT is what was used before the age of Windows NT/XP. It is restricted in that you cannot apply file permissions to the filesystem, and files can only be less than 4GB in size.
NTFS is where its at in terms of Windows. Not sure how you'd fix your problem though.

Since you already have a legitimate CD key, why not just download and burn a new copy?

FAT32 is the old filesystem of Win98 that's so well documented every other OS and device can handle it.
NTFS is the NT file system, it's journalling and supports all of the NT features (like mounting drives into directories instead of drive letters) but AFAIK few other OSes are willing to interact with it.

Well my computer crashed again when I tried to install a driver for my ATA/IDE RAID controller card, so I am gonna try and fix the disc, reformat again and reinstall using NTSF. If it still errors out, I will download a new copy as suggested(Didn't know I could legitimately do that )

Your CD key will only work with the version of the software it was originally packaged with. So if your original OS was XP Home your key won't work with XP Pro or Media Center versions. I have no idea what XP Black is.

I don't know what it is either, but its bundled with extra software so I will find out. If its not what its supposed to be it won't really matter cause it will be the only thing on a formatted HDD.

If you don't really know what the XP Black edition is, don't download it... it's a modded XP with lots of illegal software preinstalled... and supposedly faster, but some odd choices make it as bloated as a regular retail version...

It loads rediculously fast and I don't see any of the software that it was supposed to come with... I only wanted Nero 7.+++ anyway, but oh well.
Am I gonna have to register this copy? I have the key but it is for the home addition. All I really wanted was a working XP disc to make a clean install from. Is that too much to ask for?

depends on which version you have, there are plenty floating around, and some come with keygens, others don't, and most don't need a key (hint: if it doesn't ask you to Activate, then it's the latter)
