Title: I grow weary of ninjas...
Post by: Sir_Stabbalot on June 07, 2007, 11:41:02 AM
Seriously, what has happened to ninjas today? Every time I see one in a game or such they're wielding a katana and charging into battle. What the hell? Ninjas were assassins. They used stealth, not bum rushing the foe and screaming. Ninjas used daggers, not katanas as a longsword would be too big and awkward to pull out at a moments notics. If a ninja got into combat with a guard, chanes are the ninja would die easily. They had one specific target they went after, they didn't take on an entire fortress.

I'm no expert in Japanese history, but it just makes no sense. Is it just me, or has anime seemed to totally ruined the common interpretation of ninjas?

What are you talking about?  Ninja DID use swords...Straight-bladed ones...And considering they are trained in assassination, I don't think they would have lost a fight against a simple guard...I just think your idea of ninjas makes you think the "common interpretation" of ninjas is wrong... =)

So, you're telling me that a ninja -who is likely wearing only a small amount of armor- could take out a fully-armored guard in combat? I don't mean sneaking behind him and slitting his throat, I mean in flat-out combat. Like what seems to always happen in media nowadays.

Being an assassin doesn't mean you're a soldier.

Snake Eyes is a ninja and he could kick anyone's butt except for Batman.

"fully-armored guard"

Aha, I think you have misconceptions about the average guard...

ahahhaah feudal japanese guards have armor?  like, just sitting there in front of a door or a hallway fully-clad?

Batman and Brock Samson eat ninjas for breakfast.

True, it may depend upon the fighting force, but any potential target is likely to have an elite bodyguard that aren't going to be just a bunch of conscripts.

Let me put it this way: What the hell kind of person would order men to guard a room but not equip them?

BROCK SAMPSON!1! (or as Molotov C*cktease would say, "Brook Simpson")

Venture Brothers is one of the best cartoons I have seen all year.

I don't watch Venture Brothers much, but I'll never forget this quote from Baron von Underbheit:

"How iz your timbervolf?"

I just find the idea of fried timberwolf funny.

Wizards vs. Ninjas.  Who would win?

It depends who spots who first. If it's the ninja, the wizard gets a throwing star to the face. If it's the wizard, we get ninja-flambé.

Shuriken were actually used more for distraction or deterring pursuers.

Really? I didn't know that, but sounds likely.

Throwing stars lack penetration, if you want to kill someone with that you'd need poison and that'd leave enough time for him to hack you to bits. Remember humans have bones that act as armor around most vital spots so you'll need quite some force to hit the brain (this is why bows are used for long range combat). Either way attacking a guard head-on is a bad idea for a ninja, he wouldn't just silently fight you, he'd alert his colleagues and I doubt guards got worse sword training than ninjas while probably carrying better weapons and armor since they are permitted to carry those while the ninja has to run around in civilian clothing and with no visible weapons.

Also a modern day ninja wouldn't use throwing stars, kunais or "ninja magic", he'd use a silenced Walther PPK, a sniper rifle and a microcamera. Ninjas weren't assassins, they were all-purpose secret agents which also means espionage. Of course you'd see James Bond grab a machinegun and charge an enemy fortress head on...

Makes sense to me.

I agree 100%.

Indeed. That's kinda the reason I stopped playing Ninja Gaiden. It starts out with you fighting a feudal-era setting, then all of a sudden you're on an airship fighting soldiers with stun batons and pistols and all your have is your katana and bow. It made no damn sense.

Girls who stop fighting to play bikini volleyball make so much sense.
