Title: Nintendo DS Browser Micro-Thread
Post by: UncleBob on June 04, 2007, 07:16:40 AM
*edit* Details for ordering the original style DS Browser *edit*

I *just* got this e-mail from NoA and *just* got off the phone from ordering mine.

For those who are interested, this version of the DS Browser will work in both the original style ("Phat") DS and the newer DS Lite, although the RAM cart will stick out of the bottom of the DS Lite (just like a GBA cart).

This item is $29.99 + $5 shipping (flat rate, so if you order more items, it'll cover it) + tax where applicable. It came out to $37.17 for me.

Additionally, if you just want to order the original style DS RAM expansion pak (say you have a DS Lite and an original DS and you want the RAM pak for both but will only use the browser in one at a time or something...) you can order it for $15. (+tax/shipping).

From looking at the resale value of some of the other Nintendo.com exclusives (Electroplankton, Pokémon Box, GCN Componet Cables and to a smaller extent, DDR Mario Mix), this could be something worth picking up at this price.

Call 1.800.255.3700 to order. Choose Option 4, then option 0. Tell them you need to order the Original Style DS Web Browser and that UncleBob sent ya!

The Nintendo DS Browser comes out in the US this week.  Quite some time after the JP/EU releases.

The DS Browser comes in two flavors.

For those who only have/use a DS Lite, there's the DS Lite Web Browser.  It *only* works in the DS Lite as the memory expansion that's included will only fit into the DSLite's GBA slot.  Should be in stores early this week for a retail of about $30.

And for those who still use their original DS, you're out of luck.  Not really - the original style of the DS Web Browser comes with a normal GBA sized memory expansion that will allow you to use it in yor original DS and your DS Lite.  Unfortunatly, this version will only be sold directly through Nintendo on their webstore (store.nintendo.com).  It's not up there yet, but should be by Wednesday according to the rep I spoke with.

Anyone seen the Lite version in stores yet?

can you watch youtube on the DS browser?
Is there a link to a video review or has NWR done a japanese review?

My work has cut us off from the internet, and I haven't been able to surf the sites I've wanted to from work for a long time anyway. So if I can watch videos on youtube and/or similar sites it might be worth the $30 entrance fee.

That's a good question...  Sounds like something you should ask in a DS Browser Megathread.

Actually, I haven't a clue... I'll let you know when I manage to get one of 'em....

lol. I didn't notice that this was the micro-thread.

You should update the original post with all relevant information when you find out though, that will help keep the thread as small as possible.

I just named it the "micro" thread because I don't plan on updating it a lot (although I don't foresee there being a lot to update)...

I get it, I was kinda joking by suggesting that you do the one thing that would help define it as a "mega" thread.

I have invaded this secret bastion of Grey and Black avatars with color.

Now what were we talking about?

Edit: I'm going to wait on a review.  I don't know if I need yet another mobile browser at my house, Laptop, PDA, and PDA phone.

Well, I just got off the phone with NoA... they expect to allow phone orders for the original Web Browser to start by Wednesday.  Additionally, the gentleman I spoke with says that they'll be doing two other things.  First, if you purchased the DS Lite browser and need the expansion pak for the original DS, they're offering a mail-in exchange program.  Second, if you just want to purchase the original pak by itself (like, if you have one of each DS, but only need one DS Card because you're only going to use it in one unit at a time), they're going to offer that through the webstore as well.  Unfortunatly, he couldn't give me any pricing on that just yet.

So hows the browsing? Is it quick and do the pictures load quickly?

It's a little slow (although not as slow as browsing mobile web on my cell).  Unfortunatly, there doesn't appear to be an ad blocker either.

The entire interface is pretty slick though.

#  The Nintendo DS Browser does not support Flash, animations, sound, video, PDFs, or any other files or programs that require a separate plug in, such as Java.

# All types of video playback, such as QuickTime (.avi) and Windows Media Video (.wmv) are not compatible with the Nintendo DS Browser and will not play.

Guess I will not be purchasing this $30 pos, maybe if it was $9.99, but since it has almost no features, I really don't see the point of having to pay for it. Something this basic should've been built into the system from the start. I wonder what took them so long to finally release it out here. You think they were trying to add a bunch of stuff and then just gave up and decided to release it as is?

i cannot even begin to describe my disappointment with the speed and quality of that browser. i was so looking forward to it. i'm glad i tried my friend's first.

sorry nintendo, i don't miss dial up.
