They must've truncated and not rounded. Damned integer function.

Post by: Ceric on May 29, 2007, 01:57:13 AM
These are for Japan using the data that BnM posted. Also at the moment it does no rounding for 2 reasons:
1. I rather give a low ball figure then a high ball figure. 2. As TVman said I just used integer division so it truncates and since this is version 1 made it simpler to get some of the other things working.
If it is really boring at work expect new fun features like maybe a function telling how much that would mean in raw money. Also I literal threw the "approximately how many were sold per x" in about 10 minutes before going to bed.
Edit: I added rounding and comparison to last week. Actually looking at it I probably won't be expanding it by much. I like to keep it to the data I have at hand. So breaking it down by Company and like will add a layer that is not with the information given. Same with Price.

Can you make the Wii colors White & Blue?

Is it just me or are the bars looking bent from some visual trickery?

No Problem.
Actually let me explain my reasoning on the color scheme. Its a gradient and the first color I put in is the System color (Wii's case White), the second the Company Color (Nintendo's case Indigo) thats how I got the color scheme. But I'm totally open to changing any part of that. Blue and White it is then. I also have to get the size down same. Its an itty bitty file but 50 larger then 640... I thought I compensated for everything but I guess the text threw it off.
I'm also working on generating a few other charts as well but there giving me trouble.

Huh, those bar graphs ARE actually easier to read!

Actually, I'm trying for a scheme of quick identification. Nintendo products have a Forward Gradient, Sony has a Backward Gradient, and Microsoft has a Verticle Gradients (actually my favorite scheme up there).

I think you should also do some hardware, software and market percentage pie charts.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: Ceric on June 10, 2007, 10:54:13 AM
I'm working on a Hardware growth chart. Though I'm programming all these from scratch so as of now the Pie Chart is alluding me. Plus I don't have the numbers to do the full software thing or I would have already thrown that in there somewhere. Market Percent... I might be able to rig something...
Edit: Here it is: It was a bugger to get I kept having little mathematical problems with it for the location of different parts.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 10, 2007, 12:04:39 PM
Once you get these all worked out, you should just combine everything you're doing in this thread with the Wii Sales Chart Thread
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: Ceric on June 10, 2007, 01:26:55 PM
I didn't want to do that because this stuff is massive and it doesn't boast well for discussion, though once all the charts are in place I think it will actually shrink. Oh that reminds me I'll probably have a new version of the parser on the way that cleans up some odds and ends that have been bugging me.

So about those pie charts... Yeah I can do those now. I was picking through the graphics API and low and behold they had a really basic pie class. It makes pie pieces which you can combine into a pie chart so there it is. That is the Life To Date of all the systems. Same color scheme as all the others. I'm going to have to go to solids it looks like. I'm looking for suggestion. Just to note black, indigo, and green are already spoken for.

Consoles PS3 = Black PS2 = Dark Blue 360 = Green GC = Indigo Wii = Lite Blue
Handhelds DS = Silver & White GBA = Indigo & Spice PSP = Red & Black
Company Nintendo = Yellow Sony = Black Microsoft = Green

I just saw your color suggestion BnM. I agree with most except Nintendo being yellow. I say Nintendo should be red or Indigo.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: Chozo Ghost on June 10, 2007, 03:48:44 PM
I think Nintendo should be red because that is the color of their logo and, of course, the color of Mario's cap.

This is the Bar graphs for ratios. Its late at night. I'm sorry about the graphs looking messy and only for the LTD but that will change later. Now that the old hard part is mostly taken care of, generating graphs, now the new hard part starts, getting them to save themselves as PNG files or any other picture format. Hoping to streamline it to be just as fast as before.

Well I suggested Yellow for a reason that will become obvious once you adopt it into the chart.

Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: Ceric on June 11, 2007, 05:24:24 AM
Ok, this is the first one with the new Color Scheme and to be generated straight to a file. Which was a lot simpler then I thought it be once I dug around more. Notice I kept the gradient on handhelds par suggestion because it allows you to quickly identify how much of the market is truly made up of consoles or handhelds. Also I'm trying to keep things smaller then 240 by 240 where possible for people like UncleBob.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 11, 2007, 05:48:28 AM
Thats look sgreat, but I would only change one thing, the color of GBA or PSP as they both use the same two colors (Red). Even though PSP is Black & Red(back slashed) and GBA is Red & Black(front slashed), at a glance it could look too similar.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: Ceric on June 11, 2007, 05:53:31 AM
Actually GBA is using a burnt orange technically but yeah I need to find a brighter orange to mimic the Spice color.
New Color plus placement test.
Methinks I'm going to ditch the Last Week graphic because then the Pie Charts will fit in bounds.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 11, 2007, 06:29:20 AM
Can you also change Nintendo to a brighter color just to lighten up the charts a lil bit?
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 1.84)
Post by: Ceric on June 11, 2007, 07:52:43 AM
Nintendo being red... I actually might have a different approach and actually put the company's logo as the background. Though I don't know how well that would work for MS.

I'm doing it from my Big Computer and how fonts are handled must be slightly different making them much thicker. I'm going to either render these on the other machine later tomorrow or look more into the issue and hope to have it resolved by next week. I'm trying a different size of graphic but it looks like I'll need to shrink it for Media Create.

Your charts are awesome, they put things in perspective.
Can you do the same for the U.S sales? I only ask because I would like to show a couple people how the Wii is kicking everyones ass besides the DS.

What MJ said. Japan sales are all well and good, but the US is even more important, as it's a larger market.

Unfortunately fully no, for the month yes.
Its not that I don't want to I just don't have the raw data. Everything you see above is generated from this particular set of data:
Which I could use to generate ratios, gross dollar figures (high estimate), a little bar graph, and a pie chart for the month. To do anything more elaborate I need to probably keep something like a database of all the figures through each consoles full lifetime so I can get the numbers like lifetime totals and like. Then I could get some more things. It shouldn't take much to generate the charts I can but it will be nowhere near as extensive. (With LTD I can't say how long it will take for someone to catch up, for example.) Also I need to chase down the fat text bug which just happened and I don't know why and I can't duplicate correctly with similar code...
Edit: I actually found better data. I'll see what I can work up in a day or two.

I still haven't resolved this bazaar thick letter problem. Also because NPD doesn't seem to allow you to give the full exact numbers, it seems you have to round, these are all approximates by nature. Also for fun I added the last known NPD total sales figure for the XBox, 14,500,480. This gives us the catch-up numbers but doesn't effect any of the other data.
Edit: Yet another update to make it prettier.

Most PDAs and other mobile browser have screens that hang roughly around 240x320 and your always complaining when the forums aren't friendly to your phone.

Ah. No, when I'm mobile browsing, I just avoid threads like this all together. It's the functionality of the threads that simply don't work for the mobile phone. For example, I can't even use the quick reply box...

Awesome job again! The NPD numbers are good.
I have a suggestion though; I think it might be better, at least for the pie charts, to seperate the consoles and handhelds, just to give a better picture of the console wars, especially since the DS is the obvious king of everything.
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 2.94) w/ infinitely more Graphics and NPD numbers

Actually the DS isn't. I was relatively shocked but it hasn't passed the GBA or the GameCube yet here in the States. The XBox ruined it because I have no color for systems that are no longer in the NPD Official numbers it got the default which is also a linear gradient. I'm going to change that next time around. Though in general all the gradient ones are Handhelds and all the none ones are consoles. I felt this lets you see just how big of a player the Handhelds are, allow for a quick comparison of them, and it saves a little real estate from adding 2 pie charts which I actually originally intended to do that but to be fair it would end up being four more pie charts for NPD and 6 for the Media Create Numbers. If there is demand enough for it though I'll definitely do it.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm always looking for ways to improve it, like I have totally different rendering settings this time and stop leaving any of it to chance.

You can't please people it seems. I had it all text because I thought it be simpler. Then people wanted charts. I made charts and trimmed the repetative data. I even made it known that I was open to suggestions especially considering colors. I got a couple and used them. What would you guys like to see?

Don't feel bad. There's nothing wrong with making the sales charts equivalent of the PS3.

Odd to include the GC in LTD numbers since it's basically dead... but I guess that it's the only objective and fair thing to do since NPD still lists it.

It's a pity we don't have more constant sales data for the US market, and we have virtually nothing for the PAL markets. Japane looks like it's generally cruise control (though I WILL be eager to see how both Gundam 0079 and Dragon Quest Swords do, Nintendo needs strong third party success stories).

Its funny how the Wii & PS3 have very similar pie charts with only the US and EUR flipped. and Wii60 combined is eating that little slice of PS3 pie. Mmmmmm PS3....
Also what the little empty box next to LTD with numbers for it? It just seems to be 1/10th of whatever the 1st charted # is below it. Was it supposed to add up all the totals? If so......

I think it's the scale, one box is roughly equal to that number.

Where do you get your numbers I wonder?

Yep, It just so happens with all of these its the first one right below happens to be the largest. Totally accidental. This is around the 5th version of this chart. One even used pictures instead of colors. It looked terrible...
You know now that you mentioned Europe. I'm sort of surprised that Europe has had so many PS3 sales as they did. Especially with them getting the gimped hardware and knowing it.

Well that makes sense, since there are 10 boxes and the highest selling fills all 10 boxes, one box is exactly 1/10th of the highest selling number. I didn't notice that there were 10 boxes earlier.

An interesting difference is that we can see from the NPD numbers that the GBA is still going strong in NA... even though its been completely superceded in Japan. Consoles just seem to live longer in America, probably trickling down into markets that don't have equivalents in Japan.

AAANNNNDDDD Back to 75k around numbers. One week after DQ:Sword shipped along with 105k Wiis, we're back to ho hum Wii shipment numbers with no hardware production increase in sight. How does Nintendo ever intend to catch up with the PS2 at this rate?

I wish I could see Pie charts for sdoftware, but we don't get anywhere near the level of detailed information we'd need to build them. The Japanese charts though give us a little better picture... but still!

Is it possible for Salesbot to maybe calculate up a combined NPD and MC LTD chart?
Just so we could get a visual representation of the JPN + USA sales?

Its the bonus content on the end of Media Create. I actually started doing that last month.

Oh, I might have noticed that had the pictures actually loaded on my computer. All of the pictures loaded except for the latest MC, so I haven't actually had a chance to check it out.
edit after I posted this it loaded. But, how about a US+JP Console pie chart and one for handhelds right next to it. Also how about some pie charts using the GAF #'s in the sales thread for the WW count.

Somebody please explain who or what the salesbot is. Are his posts automated at all, or is he just someone's gimmick account?
Title: RE: Fun with Numbers (Version 2.95)
Post by: Ceric on September 06, 2007, 02:28:30 AM
SalesBot is SalesBot. He has semi-automated posting, some of the behind the scene stuff is indeed somewhat automated, but no he is not fully automatic like his brother Newsbot.

I think your clues only paint half the picture. Why did Salesbot pop up around the same time as the Sales threads in the Wii section and the DS section got stickied to the top? is Salesbot NWR sanctioned? Is he really related to Newsbot? And if so why does Newsbot never really acknowledge Salesbot with something even as minor as a link to the sales threads when sales are brought up in the News?
When will the truth come come out? Stay tuned. More at 11.
