Title: Origins of your forum name?
Post by: decoyman on May 26, 2007, 05:00:19 PM
Hey everybody... so, um, I've always been curious about how people choose their screen names in places like forums and all. So, this is a thread to discuss it! If you want to, you know, vanquish the fog of mystery, this is the place to do it.

So, I'll go first. Decoyman was a comic character with a big target on his chest that I used to draw in high school. He was a sort of accidental superhero, whose only power was to keep other characters (such as those from my other comics: Super Slug and Jan Snordan, the skiing Norwegian) from getting hurt. I think I dissolved him in acid, dropped anvils on him, and did all sorts of other nasty stuff to him. But since he was like made of jelly or something, he was never hurt too bad. His arch-nemesis was Dr. Fuzzball, who was evil, and had some sort of tragic past (he didn't used to be a fuzzball) that drove him to his evil ways. Their rivalry was never resolved because, well to be honest, I got too busy. But it was good (and weird) enough to be used as a screen name, and so, his odd legacy lives on to this day.

So how 'bout anybody else? I'm curious about lots of you guys, so I want to hear 'em all

If I need to explain my login name, then you haven't played enough fighting games.

Ironicly I don't play fighting games much as I use too.
I now play SF2 on the Wii, with some Guilty Gear on the side, that's about it.

ShyGuy actually started as my CB handle when I was a kid because I am antisocial. I didn't think of Super Mario 2 when I came up with it, but it may have been subconscious.

I wanted to be Smoke on XBand 'cause I liked the cybernetic ninjas in MK3 and thought Smoke was cool.  But it was taken, so the thing suggested Smoke39.

I never got to play with anyone on XBand. :/

Really, I can't remember why I picked it.

The name just sort of hit me when I was outside a Taco Bell one day in High School though it started out as:

Ceric Tiegjunge von Traum

Then when I first used it in a CS match with the Comp Club I found it to be to long so it became:

Ceric

After that it actually went through an alternative because someone else in the world seems to like the name Ceric as well so for some things I'm:

CericME

Fun factoid is that the ME stand for Millenium Edition.  I'm the only one who liked the OS and had a rock solid experience with it.  The secret was to let something else do some of the memory management.

BlackNMild

Some think its because of the similarly named cigar Black and Mild's
but even though that may be partially true, I actually picked the name cause it actually describes me for the most part.
I am a black man who happens to be very mild tempered, with N being a much better and abbreviated way of saying "and", hence the BlackNMild

2k1, well thats the year I started using the name, and its also when I turned 21(I could finally be a legal alchoholic, YaY!)

UB, is Bill your uncle? Does he really go by the name Bob inreal life? Its ok, you can tell us, we're all family here.... No that doesn't mean we are all gonna touch you you too, as we can't all be your uncle. Besides he obviously called "dibs" already, and none of us would want to break that sacred rule of trust, it just wouldn't be right.

Ehh, I've used mine for email since some point in early high school.  I hated coming up with usernames, and I usually stick with this one.  I suppose I use it because I feel like I blend in a lot, unless I do something to stand out, and even then, I blend in amongst those who stand out.  It's a little off, but I like it.

Post by: Ian Sane on May 28, 2007, 05:03:04 AM
My first name is Ian.  In high school my brothers and I were really into wrestling and liked to wrestle on the trampoline in our backyard.  Naturally we made up wrestling personas for ourselves and I was thinking of using a play on words that incorporated my first name.  Initially I came up with Ian Vader (invader) and Ian Credible (incredible) but thought it was too similar to the real wrestlers Vader and Justin Credible.  I was talking about it with my Dad and he suggested Ian Sane (insane).  It seems so obvious now I don't know why I didn't think of it myself.  Anyway I liked it enough to start using it as a common alias.  I was originally thinking of adapting it as my "professional name" as the guitarist for my band but then my brother joined and I figured it would be better to go by my real name to acknowledge our relation.

Coincidently my real last name starts with 'S' as well.

You pronounce Ian as "In"? or do you pronounce it as "E-an"? I though you would pronounce it as "I-an" and therefore "I-ansane" which would sound like "I am sane" or "I Insane" when said normally. But now that I think about it, I guess you pronounce it as Ean which would sound like "E-in" or "En" when said quickly. Making for En-Sane which now makes alot more sense.
Title: RE: Origins of your forum name?
Post by: Ian Sane on May 28, 2007, 08:23:00 AM
I pronounce my first name "ee-en".  So "Ian Sane" is kind of like pronouncing "insane" with an extra syllable.  EE-EN-SANE

I like mantises a lot, really really a whole lot, I would even have them as pets but it sucks to see them in captivity, so I can't do it. The scientific name of the order mantidae got deformed for some reason in my head and it ended up the way it is now when I needed an account name ten years ago, when I was young and starting into this interweb thing, I don't use anything else since that time.

have been using it since, although since it's a pretty popular anime character availability varies, so if it's already taken, I use Atun (thanks to a friend who couldn't pronounce the nick... lots call me that now teh joys of the INTERNETZ....) or some other variant....

and just in case, Atun = Tuna in Spanish...

I started with "Bill" back when I signed up originally, but I eventually got bored with it and asked for "Aurion" to be added to the end of it (because I love Kratos Aurion from Tales of Symphonia so much! )...

My handle is shortened from Ultimate Party Bear, which comes from an inside joke that involves Battlefield 1942 and Sealab 2021.  I only started using it online because my preferred name, which is based on a lifelong nickname that I used to hate but eventually embraced, is always taken.  Always.  Except here, oddly enough, on the one site I use the Party Bear one instead.

From Wiki:

"Easy Cure were a British punk rock and post-punk influenced band from Crawley, Sussex formed during the late '70s by former members of Malice. Easy Cure went on to fame when, after several lineup changes, they became The Cure."

The Cure, after i got into their music, became my most favorite band and biggest influence. I chose EasyCure to reflect their beginnings with my beginnings on this forum (first, and really only forum im a part of). also because it represents the band when they were a bit more of a punk band and when i first got into music it was all old 70s punk, and like them, i too changed and grew into a wider range of styles.

My avatar is from their 1982 album; Pornography not one of my favorite albums but one of the best covers they have.

I tried using my real name, but it had already been taken. So I used my nickname, "Geech". My friends started using the word to describe something that described something funny and different. I have no clue where they got it. I guess I fit the bill so much that they decided to just use it as my permanent label. Which is why I decided I'd use it here.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Stratos (Greek: στρατός, meaning "army") is a fictional character from the popular Masters of the Universe franchise.

He is a member of the Heroic Warriors. Stratos is the leader of a race of Bird People from the land of Avion, Eternians with the power of flight and other bird-like abilities. The Bird People are close allies of He-Man, and Stratos is one of his most trusted warriors. Besides the power of flight and his aerial acrobatic skills, Stratos is also a handy spy for the Heroic Warriors due to his sharp, bird-like eyes. In several versions of the franchise, he can also fire energy blasts from his hands.

The "Insano" part of my name actually evolved from something I did in Madden, using the create-a-team feature and one of the premade logos I used inspired me to call the team the Insanos. The username is meant to be taken as me being Lord of the Insanos. The funny thing is over the past couple years friends of mine have taken to calling me "Lord" as a nickname, and I'm fairly certain they aren't aware of my Internet name.

Quote from: Wikipediapage; The Cure
Formation and early years (1973–1979) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cure#Formation_and_early_years_.281973.E2.80.931979.29)
The first incarnation of what became The Cure was The Obelisk, a band formed by students at Notre Dame Middle School in Crawley, Sussex. The band .... featured Robert Smith (piano), Michael "Mick" Dempsey (guitar), Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst (percussion), Marc Ceccagno (lead guitar) and Alan Hill (bass guitar). The first real incarnation though came in January 1976 when Ceccagno formed Malice with Smith and Dempsey along with two other classmates...., Smith now also on guitar and Dempsey switching to bass. Increasingly influenced by the emergence of punk rock, Malice's remaining members became known as Easy Cure in January 1977.Smith and Dempsey had, by this time, been joined by Lol Tolhurst from The Obelisk on drums, and new lead guitarist Porl Thompson. Both Malice and Easy Cure also trialed several unsuccessful vocalists before Smith finally assumed the role of Easy Cure's frontman in September 1977.

That year, The Easy Cure won a talent competition with the German label Hansa Records, and received a recording contract. Following disagreements in March 1978 over the direction the band should take, the contract with Hansa was dissolved. Smith later recalled "We were very young. They just thought they could turn us into a teen group. They actually wanted us to do cover versions and we always refused." Thompson was dropped from the band that May, and the remaining trio was soon renamed The Cure by Smith.

And there you have it. The reasoning behind it was, well The Cure was one of those bands i'd always heard of but never listened to. When i did my mind was blown and music was never the same again, seriously. No other band can play some vastly different styles and make it sound perfect and seem effortless. To grow from one genre/style to another over your career is one thing, but to be able to produce vastly different sounding music on a single album is simply amazing. Thus they left their mark on me, and the name stuck not only as something that sounds pretty cool, but I've applied my own personal meaning to it.

Now you know!

Also, those of you hear when I first showed up might remember my first avatar:

Which is The Cure's fourth studio album, Pornography (1982) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography_(album)). The shrunken image is a little hard to see but if you follow the link, you'll see the image of the then 3 Cure band members on the album cover. The Cure's first album, Three Imaginary Boys, was actually the first inspiration for a username when i decided to join the forums but i couldn't for the life of me get a damn comfirmation email, so i went through a ton of variations on that name before getting lucky with EasyCure. Oh, for those of you who have played Animal Crossing on-line with me, you may find this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Boys_Don%27t_Cry.jpg) image familiar.. as its my Curiosa town flag!

Way back when, Yahoo used to have the real time chat. They also had those easy emoticons you could quickly add to the chat. One of them was 'Bustin out laughing'. For some reason that stuck with me. I was trying to decide on a username and that's what popped in my head. I had originally bustin97@yahoo.com, but I lost the password and couldn't retreive it, so I moved on to bustin98@yahoo.com. And I have just kept the name for the past 12 years.
Title: Re: Where did you get your Username?
Post by: EasyCure on July 16, 2009, 11:16:23 AM
And now its short for "Bustin' out kids left and right" or just "Bustin' makes me feel good" ;D

I've personally never been a fan of numbers in usernames or emails, but thats just because its easier to remember a name/phrase than a slew of numbers. One or two isn't bad obviously (as in your case) but i hated having friends emails or instant messenger names be something like SuperMario123456798. That wasn't a typo either, i meant the 9 to come before the 8 to show how annoying it can be. You sit there thinking "oh it wasn't that hard, it was sSuperMario123456789@__.com" and two seconds later you get that notification that the email wasn't delivered cuz you fucked up their retarded name! UGH!

Yeah i'm the same way. Unless I had no choice but to add a number in it, i wouldn't. For instance, when i mentioned earlier how i originally went with "ThreeImaginaryBoys" as my username for the forums; if it were too long i might of settled for "3ImaginaryBoys" or something like that.

Well I once frequented a *EXPLICATIVE* forum and wanted my user name to rhyme with my favorite way of smoking. I also wanted it to sound japanese for some reason, but since no Japanese name/word rhymed with the word "Blunt", I decided to use the word "Stogy". And thus, KashogiStogi was born.

I recently changed it to Kashogi Y. Stogi because I thought the "Y" gave the name a little more rhythm and also because one of my middle names starts with "Y".

Title: Re: Origins of your forum name?

Yes I did.

My first name "Don'tHate742" was derived from a rhyme I had used quite often; e.g. Don't hate, celebrate; but any word could replace "celebrate" as long as it rhymed. The "742" was taking from the Simpsons address.

Requiem came from a beat I made that sampled from the easily recognizable theme of "Requiem for a Dream." It was the first beat I've ever made, but it was the one that got me started. So I called myself Requiem in honor of that theme.

Don't forget Permutation! ;)

Hey, Insano, that's funny that you are called 'lord'. I had a friend whom people liked to call Jesus because he had really long straight hair and a beard that bore a striking similarity to how Jesus is stereotypically presented in American pop culture. Much like your new avatar.

You know, I'm actually NOT as much of a clean freak as my username might have you believe. That doesn't mean I don't like things clean, I'm just not obsessive about it.

I'm pretty clumsy though, and what do you do when you make a mess? You mop it up. Since I figured I'd be making a mess of things on forums due to my tendency to drift off-topic and my poor social skills, I thought it would be a fitting username.

My name comes from the Soul Calibur fighter Maxi.
I am pretty good with him and he has an similar personality as me.
So Maxi from Soul Caliber is the strong silent type?

Maxi from Soul Calibur must also get teased by Cassandra and Sophitia while playing Animal Crossing. ;)

Really, there's no real story about my name.  I just wanted something that wasn't obtrusive or would stand out.  When I came up with the name for an email account in high school, I intention was a name that didn't draw attention to itself, something I'd have to create the attention for, since it wouldn't do it itself.  Also, it wasn't completely lame.  As such, I've used it consistently since then, and I like to pretend that I'm the original "thatguy" on the internet, whether I am or not.

So I take it you aren't the owner of www.thatguy.com?

I also like to think I was the first to create my username. After all, I've been inputting my name as "MOP" in videogames since before the Internet even existed.

Well... probably not.  If I had to guess, I'd say I came up with the name in 2003, at some point then, if not 2002, but I'm certain.  Then, I think it was pretty much just an email account, and I added my initials to the end, in case people couldn't tell which guy it was referring to ;)

Which came first?  The website that told people not to be me, or me?

I think Pale said he would allow someone to change their username once if they really wanted it. So make sure that's what you want to do before asking.

I once made an account named "elaP."  I think it was banned.  I put a negative color filter over Pale's avatar, and mirrored it, as well.  I don't remember what else was up with it, but the origin was that Pale started taking my points, and I was winning :(

Isn't that an abuse of Mod Powers, though? You should get some reparation bonus points for that. I'll give them to you. How many sound fair for that? 10? 20? I'll give you 42.
