I love how the first 11 games on the overall chart are all PS2 games. Our how the top 9 PS2 games all sold better than even the top game for both the XBox and Gamecube. Sony has a stranglehold on this market that really needs to be overthrown.

Also funny how the XBox outsold the Gamecube yet the Gamecube had better game sales- what are XBox owners buying?

Why can't we create a new thread for each month?  Is PlanetGameCube running out of hard drive space?

hahahahahahahahahahaha!

why isn't resident evil zero in star fox adventures position when it has sold more?

jackson:  They go by dollars generated rather than overall unit sales.  So, while Resident Evil 0 sold more games than the four titles above it, RE0 generated less money due to its being cheaper/being given away for free.

Post by: Mario on March 22, 2003, 06:19:52 PM
Actually, Metroid Prime and possibly RE0 are in the top ten because of the free game deal, because that overall sales chart goes by how much money each game made, and when you get the free game deal, Metroid's price goes down to $0.00, making it not move up in the charts at all... get what im saying bitches?

Are them bundles still out?
They are probably contributing to X-Box's sales.

Can I please see a link confirming these numbers?  Because I've been seeing links that say Splinter Cell has a higher spot on the latest NPD charts than Metroid Prime and Mario Party 4.  But your sales data says both Metroid Prime and Mario Party 4 beat Splinter Cell.

I don't think your list is correct.  According to:  http://www.gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/npd_list/28560.shtml

It has the NPD list for February and no GC game made the top 20 list but two XBox games did with Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell.  So how can both Metroid Prime and Mario Party beat Splinter Cell and Metroid Prime beating Ghost Recon when neither of the games made the top 20 list?

Byron:  You're mixing apples with oranges.  Theaveng's list is absolutely correct.  Look at the Top 25 list that theaveng provided.  You'll see that it matches up perfectly with the Gamespot list.  Now, Metroid Prime did outsell Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell as far as "total units" are concerned.  However, Metroid Prime did not generate as much money as the other two titles, thus being ranked lower than the two XBox titles in Top 25 list.  With Nintendo's free game with GC purchase deal, we're going to continue to see a disparity between actual units sold and money generated.

Edit:  Remember that NPD ranks their games by money made that month, not total amount sold.  That's why Resident Evil 0 is ranked ninth, despite beating #5 Animal Crossing, #6 Super Mario Sunshine, #7 Skies of Arcadia Legends, and #8 Star Fox Adventures in total units sold.

The multiple post problem only happens on THIS forum.  So it's planetgamecube.com that has the settings mis-configured.

Febraury was not a wonderful month for Gamecube, but that was obvious.  Nintendo didn't have any games coming out; there were just a bunch of rather crappy third party games.  March sales with Zelda will probably be very good (well, at least the Zelda part).

And it only seems to happen when YOU post, Troy, so I'd say it's something that YOU are doing, being impatient and hitting refresh frequently is my guess.  Please stop, or I'll have to ban you just to keep from having to delete all your extra messages.

Actually, it's a connection problem.  Microsoft Network/MSN has problems connecting to your website, and it responds to this inability to connect to PGC by sending multiple copies of my message.  Not sure why PGC is so hard to connect to?  No matter.  I fixed it.  I click "Reply" immediately followed by "Stop" and that way only one message is sent.

Yes, and that's why the game is listed twice on the NPD charts, once as the stand-alone game and once as part of the bundle -- they might not scan the game, but do they do scan the box that it is contained in, and since every box contains one copy of the game -- presto!  I simply added the two numbers up to arrive at the figure I posted above.

I don't have the figures in front of me, but I think w/o the bundle sold about a million copies, and another half-milllion were sold with the bundle.

Any idea why Skies of Arcadia is not selling that well?  It is not available locally, but this is a smaller town.  Well enough be sold for a sequel on the Cube?  How many have been sold?
Title: February Console & Game Sales (NPD)
Post by: FFantasyFX on April 01, 2003, 06:01:48 AM
jarob:  Skies of Arcadia isn't selling really bad, but its not selling that great either.  As I wrote above, the two month total (actually just three days and a month) is 45,000.  The original for the Dreamcast sold just 100,000 copies.  If the GCN version sells 100,000, that might be enough for a sequel.  200,000 would make it an unqualified hit, but its looking increasingly unlikely that it will reach that benchmark.

If Sega would have ramped up the advertising for the game, it might have sold better.  They targeted the hardcore gamer by advertising in gaming magazines and websites, which was a good move.  But, I think they should have went the extra mile and bought some television commercials during cartoons/children's programming to reach the supposed "kids" audience they were aiming for.  I find it interesting that Sega's stated intended audience and their marketing strategy didn't exactly mesh.  Troublingly, they seem to view the game as a niche title and are willing to leave it at that.

Ask Dreamcast owners if sales matter.  They'll tell you YES sales matter...or more accurately, lack of sales.  Sales determine whether or not Nintendo will still be a player in the next console war (2005-10) or go bankrupt like previous gaming companies (Atari, Coleco).

I vouch that the figures I gave above are a totally accurate (give or take 1,000-2,000 games) representation of games sold in North America.  Unfortunately, my word of honor doesn't seem to be going for too much nowadays.

If you'd like to check my calculations, simply open up this link courtesy of Mingnesium:  January Sales, and then find the ten games in question.  Then, simply add the numbers theaveng posted for February to the figures you find from the link.  Voila!  You should end up with about the same numbers that I posted (remember that I included the bundled Super Mario Sunshine games in my SMS figure).  Happy calculating!
