Title: Problem with Wii controller
Post by: The Curmudgeon on May 17, 2007, 08:37:13 AM
Hello.

Well, sorry if I come across as a "newb" with this question, but I just got my Wii about a month ago and I tried to use it today and guess what?  It didn't work.

I was trying to play the tennis game, and the hand icon was working fine, the "A" button works fine, but when I tried to swing the Wii controller it didn't respond at all.  I've tried it with other games and its the same story.

I've replaced the batteries, reset the machine, reconnected the Wii controller and still no joy.

Any one out there care to help me out?

Welcome

Does the blue light on your controller show you as controlling player 1 (furthest light to left)? I've had weird issues where some controllers will only activate as 2nd or 3rd player, even if player 1's controller isn't powered on. (if you're controlling a player other than 1, you'll be able to navigate the menus and all, but I don't think you'd be able to play once you got into the game if it's single-player). I think I've fixed it by doing the "sync" trick, where you hit that red button on the console itself under the SD card flap, then the button on the controller in the battery compartment. Good luck, sounds annoying.

P.S. – There's a technical help forum for this kind of stuff. Maybe it can be moved by a mod?

Hi Decoyman

Thanks, but no joy so far.  It says I AM player one, and even after doing what you said the problem is still the same.  Sigh.

Anyone else had/have this problem?

You tried the Sync button as well?  I don't recall if I've heard of this before or not, but I think the best thing to get a quick answer may be on Nintendo's help website.  If I find anything, I'll let you know, but I recommend you look there yourself, since you probably know more about the issue than I do.

If you have multiple controllers, make sure your play the match with the proper one... often times you can navigate menus with either and the Wii/game will sometimes switch player to controller associations in game.  Otherwise, it sounds like your remote failed (specifically the accelerometers).  If you have the luxury of trying a different remote (say a friend's remote; use the 1+2 buttons to do the temp sync), try it and see if it works.  That will help diagnose the problem.  From what I hear, it sounds like your going to have to call Nintendo tech support and get the remote replaced under warranty.

If you've only had it for a month, you *should* be able to swap the Wiimote at a store, if not you can buy a new one and return the old one, and tell them it's defective - normally I'm against this kind of thing, but if you've only had the system for a month, then you should be able to return it, or at least part of it, to the store.
