Title: Weird Video Game credits

Anyone remember on how NES and SNES games, the game designers would have names like TLK$300, or Tatsu.com, or something equally strange.
Anyone know why this was the case? Just the developers goofing around? Or poor translation?

I think it's a mix of both. The original developers of several games were Japanese, and I imagine some of them realized people wouldn't be able to tell who people were by their names, so they just picked words they liked in the English language as their names.

I recently learned that "Suda51" comes from the way "Goichi" sounds like "5, 1" in Japanese.

Not in the game credits, but I remember the opening screens to either Earthworm Jim or EJ2 were pretty funny. It might have been the instruction manual. It said "Table of Contents...", then something like "Contents of Table: Legs, top" or something like that. It was funny when I was 12 or so.

Instruction manuals are garbage these days...not that it really matters since the instructions are all in the games, but it's something that I'll always feel nostalgiac about.

I thought Suda51's name was actually Goichi Suda

Yeah...that's the play on words, "Suda51" could be pronounced "Suda Goichi". Why put the names in reverse? I guess 51Suda just doesn't look or sound as cool.

Don't they usually address people by their last name first in Japan? That always confuses me, because I never know if anyone reverses that trend when they're referred to in the US.

I remember once we played through Contra at a church all nighter and there was a Japanese missionary there. He translated the names in the end credits for us. Konami means little wave!

I had a friend from Japan by the name of Takashi Hamada. So, was Takashi his last name and HAmada the first? Ever since I found that out, I wonder if I was calling him by the wrong name...

No shredder the other posters mean that Japanese refer to people by their last name instead of just like their first name, its a sign of respect to people there such as like how we would say Mr. Hamada if we would refer to your friend out of respect.
