Well, the girl is begging him every night for sex so I don't think he's that desperate.

I've never understood anime, and probably never will. Frankly, I'm glad I don't. It's meant for pedos, after all.

I'd say shoehorning me into just one category of sexual deviancy would be unjustly exaggerated and grossly inaccurate...

Bill, that's a great comeback.

Yeah, I was joking. However, I wasn't joking about the not understanding anime. Whenever I try to watch any of it, I end up thinking "Wait, what the hell is going on?". I'm a Sci-Fi guy, what can I say?.

There's plenty of sci-fi anime to watch, and with enough technical jargon to boot.

Unfortunately it often ends up full of drama.

A rule of anime is "There's always time for drama". There may be a missile flying towards your face or a badguy dashing for the "destroy the whole world" button but that's no reason not to have a discussion with some other character about who's to blame for the death of your parents while having a few flashbacks about your miserable childhood. Fortunately missiles and badguys know this rule so they will conveniently wait until the drama is over before continuing their work.

That's exactly what I don't like about anime. There's just way too much drama.

And I hate the idea of Gundams. If I had the funds to build a giant war machine, I'd cover it with guns and armor the hell out of it. Sort of like Titans from Warhammer 40k. It sure wouldn't be humanoid, or fly. And the pilots would be connected throuugh their nerve system to the machine, so there's no need to waste time pressing buttons.

And people flying without a jetpack/shooting fireballs out of their hands with no magic or anything, that's just wierd and overdone since DBZ.

And the guys sometimes look like chicks. No matter how you cut it, that's just wrong. There should be no excuse for that.

And psychic chicks as sidekicks/main characters who constantly are having emotional issues. That's just so lame.

And adult characters looking like kids, that's just wrong.

And I think I'll stop there. I don't want to make more enemies then I already have...

I heard the reason that anime characters have big eyes is because the guy who made Astro Boy was a fan of Betty Boop.

Yes.

Hmm. This is a tough case.

....I suppose there's always Miyazaki.

I'm personally a picky anime enthusiast...I hate Gundam (and pretty much all mechas in general besides Full Metal Panic), I hate Dragonball Z, I hate love triangles, I hate most shoujo, I hate plots based around a nerdy guy suddenly getting a harem, I hate emo protagonists, I hate stories that are completely based on characters fighting, and the main character will always get his ass kicked until he somehow finds some new power and defeats the enemy, I hate stories that revolve around some guy finally meeting up with some lost love, only for it to be ruined by other girls who coincedentally fall for him at the same time, and I could go on and on...Oh yeah, sad endings!  Sad endings make me angry...Angry with rage!

I tend to like anime with either deeper stories (Mushishi, Kanon, Miyazaki) or random, unique comedy (Suzumiya Haruhi, Hayate the Combat Butler, Sumomomo)...

If I watched anime as a hobby I would probably watch whatever sounded good to me and go from there.  But pretty much the only stuff I see is whatever is shown Saturday morning on Fox.

Add this to the list: I loathe androids above all. If I built a robot, it sure as hell wouldn't look like a chick, or any human. It would be a hulking armored engine of destruction, bipedal with the basic humanoid shape (legs, arms, head) but without the useless stuff (like a face). Screw personality, slave the thing to me and give it just enough AI so if I point and say "Kill", everything in that general direction dies.

Sure it wouldn't be pretty, but when the crap hits the fan, I'd rather have a beast of a machine covered with guns on my side then some half-naked robot chick.

Ironically enough I'm a pretty general/picky cartoon watcher as well, I watch both American and Japanese.  Thought there is now particular formula that works for me.  I've been surprised by a few different times.  I will tell you this I hate when they take good animes with plenty of potential and then do the whole cliche organization turning against them thing, I'm looking at you Hellsing among others.  I have a few other pet peeves to.

Though what is the background from?

Heroic Age, destruction at a larger scale than I have yet to see...wait, can the Nodoss even be considered mechas?

I wasn't actually talking about a mech, more along the lines of something roughly seven feet tall that could be attached to squads to provide fire support.

However, it sounds interesting. Elaborate.

Edit: There was one piece of anime-styled art I remember seeing on a forum somewhere, but I forget where or what it was from. It wasat night on a skyscraper in a huge city. Two characters were shown, one was a woman in body armor, with only her face exposed, though she was wearing something on her head licke a comm system or headband. The other was a fully-armored figure in similar armor, except it was wearing a helmet that vaguely looked like the Tau Commander's from DOW, appeared to be a male and was roughly 150% her size.

Also, that guy had a gun that looked like it was modeled off of a sniper rifle, but had a belt-feed with bullets that looked like tank shells. And I love overkill.

See, now, if I ever built a killbot, it may have a face, but it definitely wouldn't have legs. I remember, on Battlebots, someone built this amazing mechanical spider - it moved quickly and beautifully. And it got creamed by a set of wheels with a tacked-on hammer. No matter how good you manage to make a machine with legs - I'm pretty sure you'd be able to make one with tracks or wheels that is faster, more maneuverable, and more stable.

Well http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7627 has a sort description of what it is like, but to get a better understanding of it I would suggest watching the first and 2nd episodes either from Youtube or Animesuki.

Basically what I meant by destruction at a larger scale was the destruction of several planet sized ships by one single entity, and that was just in the first 2 episodes that I watched. Obviously there's going to be some drama, but I don't think it is going to be as boring as Gundam is.

Gundam is not boring! >=( (unless you're refering to GSD, G-Savior or GGundam.... in such case I'll let it slide...)

about Heroic Age.... Xebec is the studio behind it, Hisashi Hirai's boring character designs, angela opening, "Gold Race"..... smells a lot like Soukyuu no Fafner! (which was awesome )
maybe it's a not-too-connected sequel (same/alternate universe)?

Yeah the character designs aren't that interesting except for Belcross and even then it looks very similar to EVA-01, the opening song is "meh" in my book, I never watched Fafner so I wouldn't know if there's any comparison. Rarely do I watch an anime with mechas because they usually don't grab my attention, but since Heroic Age had some big explosions, and the Golden Tribe woo'd me, and the Nodoss (IMO) in no way can be considered mechas, so I liked it.

True, tracks do have many advantages, but the analogy you're using isn't 100% applicable. The difference was that in Battlebots, the treaded robot had a dedicated weapon, the spider did not. My idea was for when motors and energy systems had advanced so that powered armor is possible, and it's only a few steps away from creating an automaton. Treads are superior for most things, but they have the inherent weakness that they can topple over if their center of balance is too high, and fixed drive systems have the weakness that they most often cannot compensate well for difficult terrain unless they have a large base, making it ill-suited for fitting in tight areas as found in close-combat or interiors.  However, for everything else like tanks, treads all the way.

Well actually, the arena for battle bots have no real terrain.  Take the wheeled bought some place like a rocky forested mountain and I doubt it really be nearly as manuaverable(sp?)  as the legged one.  Sort of how it is.  Legged robots are generally more adaptable and consistent speed wise.  Wheeled are faster but are effected by their environment more extremely.

Only if the leg bot has proper feet for a very uneven terrain.
