Title: The 2nd half of March is Semi-Obscure Eight-Bit Video Game Character Month!!
Post by: vudu on March 17, 2007, 07:29:14 AM
In order to celebrate our heritage (and the fact that we tend to know more about old video games than most people) I declare the second half of March is Semi-Obscure Eight-Bit Video Game Character Month!!

Pick a character (any character) from an eight-bit video game (NES, or otherwise).  Original sprites are encouraged, however, artwork and/or renderings (official or fan-made) are accepted.  According to the rules, you shouldn't pick major characters (no Mario, Link, Samus, etc).  A general rule of thumb:  if your mom knows who the character is, they're not obscure enough.

I was thinking about a semi-obscure 8bit character just now on the way home, before I saw your thread. Maybe I'll post about her

My mom nor any non-gamer would know who that character is, therefore it fits the obscure "rule of thumb". Besides he only appeared in one game, and was later removed from it, so that kinda makes him fit into the definition of obscure.

Are you thinking of Fantasia (the Devil) or Sleeping Beauty (Maleficent)? Little Nemo was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, and was released theatrically in Japan by Toho-Toei. Two years after it was released in Japan, it was dubbed and given a theatrical release in the states by a firm called Hemdale... Disney was never involved, though.

I had no idea the characters existed outside of the game. But now I have chosen a different game from the 8-bit era. It is also another game I would like to see come to the VC at some point.

p.s. I edited the photo a little .

A Rare game may be a bit too mainstream, too but considering this is only semi-obscure character month, not fully obscure it's acceptable. Though I think the Giana Sisters are quite obscure.

pap, that was  video game character?

bnm2k1, Little Nemo was based on a comic strip, the movie came out *after* the game so it counts your good. Plus if you have played the game and watched the movie, I have both and love them both, you would know that they have major differences.

The movie came out in 1989, as was mentioned previously in this thread, the game was released by Capcom in 1990 in the US and Japan... so I'm afraid that's incorrect.

Arbok has the right idea.

Technically, the Noid was a corporate mascot, but I am sure that the game itself is very obscure.

I used to play it all the time as a kid. It was hard, but I always had fun (especially with the pizza challenges at the end of the stages).

Without the Noid game, there would be no Pizza Hut signs in TMNT the arcade game...and there would be no Sneak King.

That explains a lot, I worked at Dominos for a long time and there was some old stuff in the back with that guys picture on it, but noone knew what he was. They must not use him any more.

The Noid game was originally (read: in the japanese version) a game about Ninjas and the pizza eating contests were Ninja power duels.

The funny thing? The Noid game was actually based on a Ninja themed NES games by Capcom released only in Japan. They just took the original game and replaced all the characters and themes with the Noid characters (consider it an early example of Elite Beat Agents).
