Title: The 300
Post by: Requiem on March 09, 2007, 12:50:44 AM
Who has seen it?

How is it?

I'm about to see it in 12 or so hours either way, but opinions are still welcomed. (B&M, I'm looking at you)

I saw it last nite. It is definately a mans movie full of badassery. There are some good choice quotes and a touch of funny dialogue. Lots of blood shed and dismemberment. I have a few issues with some of the special effects but its just a little nitpicking and doesn't take away from the action or the story. All of the battle scenes are suspenseful and have a possiblity of putting you on the edge of your seat, while the sex/nudity scenes are done very artistic & very tasteful.

my issues with the sfx - don't read till after you've seen the movie - its distractions like these that can keep some from enjoying what they are watching.
The blood looks very fake, as its almost all CG, and its flying everywhere yet it never soaks the ground or stains a blade. Arrows never seem to leave holes in the shields

you do and it really adds a nice effect to more than just the fighting scenes.

It was good and I was really into it during the "meat" of the movie, but when it ended I wasn't hyped up or anything. It was wierd, cause I expected everyone to have an adrenaline rush or a testosterone boost or something, but as soon as it was over, everyone was calm. Not what I expected.

My friends and I had a couple skirmishes on our way home from Fight Club.

thats exactly what I was talking about, even though it could be because we all watched the 12am premier at the IMAX screen and it was after 2am when the movie got out. But even still I expected some sort of post-movie excitement.

Just got back from watching it, and WOW it was a great movie...It'll definitely fit into my top ten...There was more blood and action than you can shake a stick at, but there was more than enough emotional material to balance it out...Best moment of the film: The audience literally went into applause when the Queen killed the traitor...It was bloody hilarious!

Last I heard, this was the ultimate chick flick...I mean, the movie does feature lots and lots of half naked men, all buffed up,  greased up, wearing small clothings and onto each other.

It doesn't get more ambiguously fruity than that!

No wonder Bill liked it so much!

I'm kind of interested in this, but I have a strong feeling I won't enjoy it. It looks so....artificial.

They used too much bloom on it...

Seriously, when I first saw posters and ads for it, I thought 300 was a game for the 360 or PS3 with all the bloom and the brown used.

i agree with you on the badassery of this movie. i saw it last night at a midnight showing and i was impressed. better than i thought it would be, the style of it all made the violence feel not so gratuitous (sp?).

i actually read your post before seeing the movie so i was waiting to see what you were talking about with the special affects but it diditn bother me so much.

i also agree with the sex/nudity scenes being done tastefully... except its hard to think of it as tastefull when you're in a sold out theatre full of guys who giggled like 5yo's when Leonidus made love to his queen from behind, or when that jerk counselman took her from behind as well

Correction...300 is the ultimate chick flick with scenes that appeal to the 15 year olds that accompany the girls .

"i actually read your post before seeing the movie so i was waiting to see what you were talking about with the special affects but it diditn bother me so much."

Well some people tend to know the faults ahead of time and then concentrate of nitpicking out other faults instead of enjoying the movie. But I'm glad you were not one of those people. Those things I pointed out were things I just happened to notice when watching and others did too. Not a big deal though, I think the movie was handled very well, even though I wish you got to see the final battle while the credits rolled.

Saw it the other night. Wasn't impressed by any other character other than the king.

Mostly ever scene that didn't feature the king was boring. The king brought everything to the movie; the fierce dialogue, the laughter, and the best action. Every other scene paled in comparison.

"May you live forever..."
This is the best looking movie I have ever seen. It oozes with style and is quite glamorous. I only wish the story was fleshed out more. And even though it was 2hrs it still felt 20mins too short. B+ "The ultimate guy flick"

Just got home from the theater. Great flick. The side-story with the Queen was a little dull, but the main plot was great. I actually liked that they CG'd the blood - it gave everything a really stylized look.

It wasn't that the blood was CG it was that blood wasn't on anything at all. Not on a sword, not on the ground and not spewing from slain soldiers as they lay on the ground.

Pretty good movie.  It's very overly prettied up (they make up for not knowing how to use a camera by making it look like they painted everything), the violence and action is often ridiculous and the use of slow motion is way too heavy, and most of the sideplots were completely uninspired (like Requiem said, the king brought it all), but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.
The action was usually pretty great, and the general design of the production was spectacular.  I felt that some of the composition (with the CG-heavy make-up) was overdone, but most of it looked amazing.

Also, while I felt the hunchback sideplot was completely and utterly unnecessary, I really liked the  "May you live forever..." line.

This was a terrible movie and I couldn't take it seriously, but I went with a large group of people and it made for fantastic humour afterwards.

this movie kicked ass in  a way i haven't seen in years(or ever?),

also blood doesn't stick to metal, spending my days flipping burgers at Wendy's blood really doesn't stay on metal, and especially if your swinging that fast. Kinda weird how you were hung up on it, i thought it was some of the best blood and gore fighting in movies in years. I thought it was stylistic and grand. Now if you were to stab something and then leave it to obosrb oxygen and dry out then it would dry out, but swinging that fast nah.

I still really enjoyed the movie, it was something that I just noticed, I wasn't hung up on it or anything.
But I'm over 300 already, I'm all psyched up for GRINDHOUSE and its 70's noir big budgeted "B" movie feel now.

Yeah, so, I just got reminded of what may be the best quote in the movie "Monster House" (I have yet to see it).

I wanted to make a smart remark, but its none to smart if I have to explain it.

So I'll just make my intentions known and anyone who has at least seen that commercial for the movie knows what I'm talkin' about.

And 300 kicks ass. Tits, blood, monsters, decapitations. Androgynous Egyptian kings (see: Stargate). What else does a guy need?

I think you are referring to the scene where the kids finally enter the house and figure out that the lamp is actually the house's uvula. So then Chowder says; "So its a girl house!". Then he says "I don't have one!"

I held out seeing this movie for a long time because I wanted to see it in IMAX. After 8 unsuccessful attempts (ranging from people cancelling to showings being sold out) I finally saw this movie.

It was not the best movie I have ever seen, but it was pretty damn good. That sex scene was one of the hottest ever in a movie, the direction in the entire movie was amazing, as was the action.  Frank Miller is a genius, I don't understand what they're planning for a sequel (obviously it's not going to be a direct sequel since the 300 except 1 died although I suppose it would still be 300 actually 301, neither the captain, nor the king were counted in the 300, the 300 were the ones the captain selected.

I just hope it's done just as well as this one.

Interesting side note, this was done in all green screen (as I'm sure you know) and they used Apple G8's to create it, and used, wait for it...

16 TERAbytes of space to create the entire movie. That's approx. (1034B = 1KB) 16,000 Gigs.

This sounds like a glorified videogame cutscene, so I'm interested, but I'm afraid I'm going to be bored past 10 minutes, and I cannot stand the overacting in the trailers, much less 2 whole hours of it, how is the action/"acting" ratio in this one?

Honestly I was worried about it myself. It seeemed like too much, but the story actually flows really well, and like I said the directing is top-notch. The overacting in the trailers is a result of marketing, it really isn't like that in the movie too much at all.

Post by: mantidor on April 23, 2007, 08:40:56 AM
I just wanted to pass by and say I really didn't like this movie at all. I knew it was little more than a glorified video game cutscene, which means I should had loved it, but I didn't. Hell, I even liked Matrix Revolutions, which sets the bar pretty low. I love slow motion, epic battles, and I can overlook one-dimensional characters and a non-existent or really bad plot, but I guess I do have my limits and is this movie. The slightly subtle homophobic undertones (which weren't really that subtle to be honest) were the icing for my hate cake.
Title: RE: The 300

With that much space everyone in the movie is really in-game models right.  The actors where just for interviews.
