Title: Michael Mann is the worst directror ever
Post by: vudu on February 25, 2007, 04:04:22 PM
Anyone else catch Michael Mann's horrific tribute to American Cinema (or whatever that cheesy montage was meant to be) towards the end of the Academy Awards?

From the trite cut of Superman in space to the tired (not to mention predictable) clips of Scarface and Reservoir Dogs.

The worst part was the cut of several war movies displayed over an out of place Hero by Foo Fighters.

Michael Mann is the worst (or at least the most over-rated) director ever.

Svevan can suck it.

Needs more Dog Day Afternoon.

Well. Scorsese won finally.

You need to shut up and die.

The Insider, Miami Vice, and Collateral are all pitch perfect, stylish, one-of-a-kind films. Heat is a masterpiece.

I preferred the tribute to foreign films myself. I teared up when they showed the picture of Robert Altman.

Miami Vice... pitch perfect... does not compute.

I'm pretty glad Scorsese won, he has been driving at it for awhile now and finally gets a little respect.

Miami Vice pretty much sucks, it's only redeeming quality is the fact that parts of it were filmed here

He makes big budget crap.  He has more in common with Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer than any respectable director should.

I haven't see The Insider; Heat was over-rated; Collateral was crap.

Michael Mann likes to put Chris Cornell out of place into movies. I like Chris Cornell music, but it sounds so weird interjected into Collateral and Miami Vice. And two sex in the shower scenes?

Miami Vice would have been a better movie if it wasn't called Miami Vice. The title give you certain expectations.

Who has a last name of Mann, what if he has a daughter. That'd mean he'd have a vagina. He wouldn't be a man. She wouldn't be a man. They'd be Menn.

The best movie of last year (of the few I've seen) was A Prairie Home Companion. Very close call with A Scanner Darkly, The Illusionist, Inside Man, Marie Antoinette, Miami Vice, Volver, and Monster House. The Fountain, Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth, The Science of Sleep, and MI:III were all pretty good too. Other than these, I have probably seen only ten other movies this year. I am selective at the theatre, plus I have to drive out of town to see the really good stuff.

Uh, The Departed is out on DVD for a couple weeks now

Prairie Home Companion - Doesn't interest me
A Scanner Darkly - The plot is thin, but the subtext has volumes
The Illusionist - The Prestige was better
Inside Man - Smart thriller with better than average dialog
Marie Antoinette - Kirsten Dunst bugs me more every time I see her.
Miami Vice - Great Cinematography, but the betrays the original source material in tone and spirit
Volver - Know little about it
Monster House - Worst CGI cartoon movie I saw last year
The Fountain - Want to see it
Children of Men - Want to see it
Pan's Labyrinth - Been told to see it
The science of Sleep - Looks intriguing
MI: III - The best of the Mission Impossible movies

Somehow, I watched Marie Antoinette. What an utter waste of time. I watched nearly the exact same movie in Grade 11 Social Studies class.. in fact, that low-budget version was better.

I saw Blood Diamond yesterday - it's very very average for an hour 40. Lots of bang and noise and i will hurt your wife etc etc. The last half hour or so really ramp it up and make it worth it.  It's not as deep as The Constant Gardener though. Nothing touches that.

Inside Man was good-ish svevan but the ending killed it in a big way. After the twist of how they did it, it wimped out like nothing happened.

Shy, I don't know how anyone could think The Prestige is better than The Illusionist. So spill and tell me why you think so.

The Illusionist - Edward Norton was great and the cinematography was fantastic. Otherwise, it worked about as well as most short stories with twist endings stretched out to feature length films...which is to say, not very well.

I haven't seen Prestige, though, so I can't compare.

Wandering is right, the Illusionist felt stretched; there was less meat to the story. Less meat = caring about the characters less. It was technically superb, but it needed more heart. Also, Michael Caine was in The Prestige and he is always a plus.

The Illusionist was good, but I am so sick of twist endings. It's like, I've seen Sixth Sense and Fight Club before, ya know? Srsly.

Wow! I've heard of a lot of people "meh" this movie and scratch their heads. I'm a fan of the NPR radio show, so I've always been interested. Your recommendation over powers the others and seals the deal for me!

I'm going to watch The Prestige this weekend, so I'll get back to you.

Although, I feel I must warn--I thought the Illusionist was rather hollow.  It was very well done (I especially enjoyed the cinematography; it was well acted and the overall story was entertaining), but I didn't feel any connection with the characters nor did I understand their motivations.  I thought the movie would have benefited greatly by adding some character development into the main characters.  Edward Norton's character didn't have any personality beyond what we saw on stage.  Okay, he's a mysterious magician, I can understand this if you want to argue it that way.  But what about Jessica Biel?  Why did she still have feelings for Edward Norton even though she hadn't seen him in twenty years?  And the Crown Prince was the epitome of a one-sided villain.  It's never as simple as "this dude's bad and you're not supposed to like him" but that's the way the audience was supposed to feel about him.

I watched The Prestige last night.  It was a very different movie than The Illusionist, but overall I liked it slightly better.  I thought The Prestige had some pacing issues and would have benefited had 15 minutes been removed from the middle section.  However, I think the story--especially the character development--was much better than in The Illusionist.  Neither Jackman's nor Bale's characters were straight-forward.  I empathized with Jackman's character, yet Bale was such a likable fellow you couldn't help but feel a connection towards him as well.

The ending:  I figured out that Bale's assistant was his twin brother about fifteen minutes before it was revealed at the end of the movie.  Despite this, I still really enjoyed the movie--especially the parts that made you think about them once the credits were finished.

Bale's entire life (lives) was one big magic trick.  There was almost no separation between his stage life and his personal life.  The idea that someone would give up half his life (the half posing as the assistant) for the sake of his art is fascinating.  I also really like those little moments that you didn't think too much about when they happened, but after you found out the trick it made you go "a-ha!".  (e.g. How Bale's wife would say that some days he loved her and some days he didn't.)

I also loved the lengths that Jackman went to in order to top Bale's trick that--in the end--turned out to be completed with a simple double.  He did the impossible (commission the creation of a cloning machine) and the unthinkable (kill himself every night).

I wrote a blog about the topic several months ago, which addresses the plot twists and formal elements of the two movies. I don't touch on character motivation too much, so it isn't a response to some of the good points you've raised here Vudu.

Maybe they lost their monetary support...

I liked the Prestige better, I'll take character development over Imagination Lands CGI any day.
