I saw that, too. My jaw just dropped when I saw the story. I never thought a whole specimen would turn up in my lifetime. As I recall, mostly all that's been found before is pieces of tentacles in whale stomachs. I think it was just last year that some fishermen hooked one and managed to take some pictures of it before it got away.
Bloodworth, you jerk, I typed this reply originally before you moved the thread to the funhouse, and got a lovely error message for my troubles.

I'm pretty sure that was a giant squid near New Zealand. I watched a program about it on the Discovery Channel.
Sorry for the move. I was inspired at the last second.

I found the story. It was "just" a giant squid, it happened off the Ogasawara Islands (near Japan), it was a scientific endeavor instead of a fishing boat, and it was more than a year ago.
Even if I'm an idiot, though, it's all still amazing.

Things like this are nice, because it proves that as much as we know about our world, there's still a lot more we don't know and haven't found... =D

So they couldn't catch a Giant Sqiud (atleast alive) and decided to one up themselves and go bigger and alive!?
I wonder what else the deep deep sea has hidden down there?

WTF does BBQ mean? I spend way to much time trying to figure out what it could possibly be an acronym for and I always come up with nothing.

Barbecue. It's thrown in with all the other TLAs (that's three letter acronyms, and technically a misnomer because few TLAs are acronyms) as a joke, I guess.

BBQ = Barbecue, it's not a proper acronym, just an abbreviation that somehow came to be.

Ok, just so you know, I knew that BBQ = barbecue. but when paired up with OMG(oh my god) & WTF(what the f***) I just assumed it had to mean somethingelse cause barbecue wouldn't make sense.
Thanks for clearing that up though, cause now I know its thrown in just for the hell of it.

B for "bar", B for "be", and Q because "cue" is pronounced that way, seriously.

It seems there have been whole specimens obtained before after all. One in 1981, caught by a Russian trawler, and one in 2003, found dead.

It's pretty crazy what people have been finding in the oceans these days. They say we know more about space than we do our own oceans and stuff like that is just pretty crazy to me. Amazing pic too.
This is off the subject a tad bit, but anyone see that prehistorical shark that was video taped a few weeks ago, maybe a month ago, found in Japan's ocean. Thing looked like a mix from a shark and a prehistoric eel. I'll find the video is anyone is interested.

HERE is the video of the frilled shark that was caught in Japan. Keep in mind that the reason they were able to catch it is because it was ill and near the surface (it usually stays about a mile below). It died a few hours later.

I really wish we would focus more on ocean exploration than space, we have barely scratched the surface of what is in the ocean.

Heh, beat me to it. I was looking on Reuters.com where I originally found it, but their search isn't so great. Definatly would be scary to be right next to the thing. They tried taking it out of the water to study it, but unfortantly died like Rhoq said. Stupidily, I should have looked on YouTube first, because I mean.. who doesn't do that for videos.
Anyways, Here is the News Report about it showing the guy swimming next to it and it out of the water. Was the one I saw on Reuters, though Rhoq's is shorter and the main footage, so nothing really different besides the end when it's laid out and in english.

Key point of the article:
Quote One expert said calamari rings made from it would be like tractor tyres.
Mmmmm.....
Both the squid and the shark are cool. I find ocean biology very interesting, but I am definitely an armchair enthusiast...I don't want to go anywhere near those icky fish, except if they're on my dinner plate!

There is a pic of the fish and even a cell phone camera video too.
Quote However, ufologists and scientists were greatly disappointed when they found out that the fishermen had eaten the monster. They said that they were not scared of the creature so they decided to use it as food. One of the men said that it was the most delicious dish he had ever eaten.

When you need to have a drink, I find it is best to not do it alone. But just cause someone somewhere is drinking at the same time as you, that doesn't mean they are drinking with you. Its just not the same.
