Title: Wii Outsells Competition in January
Post by: WindyMan on February 21, 2007, 05:26:52 AM
And amazingly, it wasn't even a close race.

The NPD hardware figures for last month are in, and it looks like all the hub-bub about the Wii being really popular has translated into big sales.  According to Nintendo, 453,503 of the hard-to-find Wii consoles were purchased last month, which is an impressive 33% more than the widely available Xbox 360, which sold through more than 294k systems.  The PS3 brought up the rear with 244k sold in January.

Nintendo's press release calling everyone's attention to this fact is below.

NINTENDO NEWS: WII ARE NO. 1

Feb. 21, 2007 - Nintendo's new Wii™ has become the best-selling video game system of any kind in January in the United States, and the fastest-selling new-generation home system. According to the independent NPD Group, Wii sold through 435,503 systems to customers in its January reporting period. By comparison, that's 70 percent higher than any other new video game system in its first January of availability during the last 10 years.

In addition, Nintendo DS™ once again triumphed as the top-selling portable system, with nearly 239,000 hardware and more than 2.4 million software units sold. In combination, Nintendo game systems accounted for nearly as many unit sales (46 percent of the total market) as those of all other manufacturers combined.

The continuing success of Wii and DS demonstrates that the public has embraced Nintendo's philosophy of entertaining current gamers in new ways, and expanding gaming for the masses. Four of the top 10 best-selling games in January were for Nintendo systems, both home and portable.

The only limit on Nintendo's success is the availability of Wii and DS systems, which continue to sell out as fast as Nintendo can ship them. Shipments are being made continuously to feed the huge demand around the country.

From what I'm seeing in other places in the net, we might have to make a thread to laugh at all the lame excuses/reasons/spin from the Wiis success. The newest one I've seen a lot this month is the "Sony is winning because they make twice as much money from every PS3 than Nintendo does from Wii". I guess this people have never heard the words "profit" or "net income".

Another one is "the Wii will stop selling after this year because there are no killer apps other than Mario, Metroid and Smash". Of course there are no killer apps if you exclude the killer apps. Lets do it for the 360: "The 360 has no killer apps other than Halo 3, GTA 4 and Mass Effect"; or "The PS3 has no killer apps other than FF, MGS and GTA".

Theres lie the rub.  The sales will be terrible by comparision when it is "readily available."

"The only limit on Nintendo's success is the availability of Wii and DS systems"

How long is nintendo going to keep shooting it's self in the foot before they start making more systems? If things dont start to pick up, nintendo is d00m3d and sony will win the console wars since they're the only ones that can keep there systems in stores...

they are in stores, but people still don't want to buy them though.
Even with Wii's being sold out, people still arn't picking up Wii systems.

Also whats funny is the guy at GameStop tried telling me (without a doubt in his mind) that they have sold more PS3's than they have Wii's.  Show him this and he probley still wouldn't believe someone though.  He also claims that PS3 has sold more systems to date.   ahhh.....so funny

Who said his store didnt actually sell more PS3s? Overall is something different but regional fluctuations can lead to a lot of weird situations in some stores.

OK?.....they are always sold out of Wii systems, yet, they have PS3's in stock....hmmm.

Also, he is not at that store 24/7.....he was clearly just shooting his mouth out and pulling crap out of his ass.
What did he have to back up his claims.....nothing, absolutly nothing

You know that is a good question, I'm sure Sony is worrying about the game drought affecting sales more.
