Title: DS Player for Wii.. would it make sense?
Post by: Shinosuke on February 04, 2007, 08:28:30 AM
After reading the article about the greatest gamecube hardware it struck me that from all the "old" systems the Wii is supporting (NES, SNES, N64, Megadrive/Genesis, Turbografix and the cube for those who forgot ;-) ), one is obviously missing -> there's no way to play gameboy games.. now one could argue that Nintendo doesn't want to cut it's own sales for GB games (especially since the DS is still what it has always been ) but since there's been a gameboy player for SNES and the cube.. isn't it only a matter of time till it wil be announced for the Wii? I mean.. the Wii could even play DS games! (DS Games!!!!) The announcement of a gameboy player that would allow to play DS games on the Wii would be the argument to immediately convince me in buying one (haven't done so yet cause, except for Zelda, there aren't exactly a lot of games out yet, that I'd consider worthy of my hard earned cash ;-) ) What do you folks think, any chances for this to come true?

How exactly were you planning on the touch screen aspect to work?

Nintendo has already commented on this. They said they did experiment around with the idea, but it just didn't feel the same. The touch screen controls were questionable according to their words and decided to just leave it be.

Yeah imagine this with games that use a combination of touch screen and buttons. That would be a pretty bad setup.
First, in order to deal with the DS' A/B/X/Y buttons, you would pretty much need to use a classic controller. True, the remote + Nunchuck could be used, but that would result in the buttons being scattered across two hands (A/B/X/Y becomes A/B/C/Z). So if I am playing New Super Mario Bros. with the Classic Controller, what do I do in order to touch the screen (to get an item)? I have to pick up the remote, aim it at the screen, and then select the item. Not the best situation.
Plus how would the Wii read the game cards?

Hmm wouldn't it be sufficient to determine wheter or not the wiimote points somewhere into the lower half of the screen? I mean.. the Wiimote could be used the same way as the stylus is used on the DS .. the mic would be missing though.. maybe they could deliver a headset along with the device to solve this issue.. is there anything else I forgot?...

Ah well, I get your point... a stylus with buttons (= wiimote) would be pretty hard to use...

It's just not....feasible in any way. Seriously.

Using the DS itself as a controller wouldn't be a bad idea for anyone who actually wants to play DS games on the big screen.
However, there's nothing that says Nintendo couldn't just release a periphreal that could simulate DS gameplay. For instance, a bluetooth wireless controller made with a touch pad and face buttons.

Of course at that point they could just tell people to go and buy a DS...

They could general release that add on where it displays the contains on a DS and a TV.

I would like for some method to display the DS's video to a big screen. I've got three people at work playing Brain Age and it'd be easier just to do a presentation that included some playing of it.
There could be a DS player, but it's really just a thing to slot your DS game card into; you'd still require a DS communicating wirelessly to the Wii to play it.
But is that technically possible? Is the amount of data moving around on the DS card during normal play on a DS capable of being transferred wirelessly just as fast as it should? If it was just using the DS like a wireless controller, sure, no problem, the DS player could do all the processing and the DS handles the input. But you'd still want the display on the DS's two screens...the touch screen especially, so you know where you're supposed to be touching, but by extension you'd need the top screen in many cases too.
Arrrgh, it's probably not possible or at least not comfortable. But I do hope there is more DS-Wii connectivity than GBA-GCN connectivity (which is separate from what we're talking about with the GB Player).

Hmm granted the Wii is powerful enough to do emulate a DS they could just add the DS games to the vc library... the Wiimote would act as a stylus replacement (= the buttons arent used), the only new hardware needed would be a new attachment for the wiimote, one that is espcially designed for playing DS games.. with one hand.. though I can't think of such a design right now..

I'd like a DS player because I move controllers around way too much when playing. So for an action game like NSMB I find it hard to concentrate because I'm physically moving my screen as I play. I'd much prefer to play it on a TV. That game doesn't even use the stylus worth a damn anyway so who cares if the "feel" isn't right.
I like the idea of using a DS to control it. Basically you're just taking the video feed and putting it on the TV. So if you have to look down to see the touchscreen you can but for games that don't require the touchscreen you can play them on the TV. Then Nintendo isn't even eating into DS sales (which doesn't matter anyway because the games sell either way) because it isn't a seperate player but rather an accessory to allow DS owners to play on a TV.
Regarding the remote I think you could do okay with a classic controller in one hand and a remote in the other. With stylus games you pretty much have to do that anyway. You can't use the touchscreen while keeping you hands in place on the DS "controller" anyway. You either only have to use one side plus the touchscreen or you have one of those really annoying games that use the whole "controller" and then periodically ask you to whip out the stylus. In that case you're swapping things around anyway.
Though personally I could play any DS game with a mouse cursor as my "touchscreen". The "touching" aspect of it doesn't do anything for me.

I think they should do a Game Boy peripheral and leave DS to the portable market.

Although I'd love to be able to sit down and play DS on my TV, I fear that without an actual DS "player" to process the video output from the DS, the games might look overly pixilated, especially on a large display. With the GB Player, they did a very good job of making sure that the games looked more than acceptable when played on a TV.

I'm with Rhoq on this one. Basically, the negatives just out way the positives and as Strell said its just not feasible. Though I'd love to be able to play my DS games on a tv and with more comfortable controls than the DS offers. I'm not knocking the DS, but I've never been able to comfortably play a handheld, but thats a different rant for a different day.
On the other hand, with the way Nintendo has been peripheral crazy, whats to stop them from releasing a device that is essentially a large touch pad but also wirelessly transmits DS game data to your wii to display on your television? It could be a small tablet with a dock for the wiimote to connect to, maybe allow its facebuttons to be usable on the tablet, but a pass-thru port to connect a nunchuck to...
Imagine a small tablet on your lap where you use your fingers instead of a stylus to do everything you would via the touch screen on a DS but have a small cursor representing your finger position on screen. The nunchuck can be used for movement, obviously, as well as add some extra buttons to the device. For instance, I've been playing Star Fox Comman recently and I really dislike the touchscreen controls for that game. I use a 'Comfort Stylus' to wrap around my thumb in such a way that it feels like i'm using an anolog stick but even thats only slightly less awkward than using a regular stylus. With this touch tablet, I can use my thumbs to control the game more naturally, and the nunchucks trigger buttons would be MUCH more comfortable than using the L button (or d-pad) on my DS. With a device like this, you'd get the tactile feeling of the touch screen with the convenience of sitting in front of a big ass tv.
Dammit, now i wish they had this in the pipeline.

What's with all of the random bumping of topics today?
If it weren't for the Game Boy Player I'd probably never play handheld games. If a DS player of sorts were released, was functional, and wasn't too expensive, I might consider it.

I'd be happy with something that would let me display my DS on the DS and the TV as well!

I would need the option of either stacking two TV's ontop of each other, or turning my widescreen on it's side to accommodate for the dual screen of the DS.

I will say, looking now, that would be pretty nice, something where you can choose which screen appears on the television, with the touch screen available on the DS itself. I'd probably give it a try, but I doubt it would exist, really.

What about the when you have something that spans across both screens? what are you gonna do then?

If you want to play DS games on a big screen, just use one of the many available emulators. If you have the right tools you can dump your own games, too.

Revisiting this topic now that the DSi is out, as much as I would like them to, I really don't think Nintendo would ever release something like this. DS software sales is not enough for them. They made the DSi because they want each individual member of the family to have their own DS. Just one per household is not good enough. So they obviously consider hardware sales to be very important. So they probably think something like this would seriously affect that business model. The whole family is less likely to each buy a DSi if they can all sit around the TV and play their DS games using their Wii.
Sucks but I think that's just the reality.

But then again won't you think Nintendo would find a way to make compelling software to try to push more hardware on the consumer if they released THIS hardware first?
Imagine they release something that isn't a touch tablet that lets you play your DS ames on tv, but a plug-in for the DS that does the same thing... but made specific games for it that, I don't want to say required... but had incentives to play using multiple devices? In other words games that required multiple DSi's (I want to be model specific in this case since this one pacs extra hardware features, like the camera) to play. You know if Nintendo could come up with a game that made sense, they'd do it and try to push for it if it could make kids beg their moms to buy a second DS for their brother/sister to play a game on their Wii.

I could totally see them doing this. That's not a compliment though. Way to think like an evil corporation there, Cure. ;)
I was thinking about how conventional the Game Boy Player was. It was really just a very user friendly device. It played all Game Boy games and even supported the link cable, which I didn't really expect since the Super Game Boy didn't. It was like no tricks, here's a product that if you're interested will perfectly suit your needs. I modded my Gamecube so I could import the thing earlier from Japan. I wanted it THAT BAD and it was so perfect that I later could just buy a replacement disc to get it working in English.
Even then it seemed somewhat out-of-character for Nintendo. Where's the catch? Shouldn't this suck in some goofy way that keeps it from perfection? The only true flaw is the Wii doesn't support it but I consider that a Wii goof. So I really doubt that the Nintendo of today would release something like that. If they did your idea, well, they would be dicks, but I would be happy with the product.

The problem with the Game Boy Player was that Nintendo made so few of them, 6 months after it released I had a hard time even finding one (and ended up having to get a used one since I couldn't find any new ones).

I don't care how dickish it is if they released it with a catch of sorts, I would buy the gimmicky game just to get a means to play my DS games on my tv.
On a side note, i'd give nintendo tons of money to download some old GB/GBC games from the virtual console dammit!

Games that involve both the Wii and DS. Like a trauma center type game where you have a nurse on DS and your the doctor cut people open on the Wii.

So connectivity mixed with waggle? Don't stop there! Surely we can incorporate R.O.B. or the Virtual Boy in there in some way. And release all the games in e-Reader format. ;)
In all seriousness that Trauma Center idea is not bad and is a good example to demonstrate the idea. If I could get a new Four Swords game AND a DS player all in one go I'd be pretty thrilled.
