Title: When will the GameCube drop in value?
Post by: UncleBob on January 07, 2007, 08:13:55 AM
With the Wii out and the GameCube on its last legs, when will we start seeing drops in the price of this unit?  It's still $100 new and $60 used... and I want/need my second one.

When will the GameCube drop in value?

I think that happened a while ago when everyone stopped buying them.

Here on Boxing Day Superstore had a GameCube plus SSBM for $90 CDN, and WalMart had just the Cube for $75 CDN.

There are some dirt cheap ones up on eBay... although after my experience with the Dreamcast I tend to stay away from buying any used console through that.

Maybe there will be a price cut this year, but I think the system's going to have a pretty abrupt "death" that may not include any official price drops.

I'm with UncleBob, I too want a second GameCube [for my bedroom] but haven't decided that $100 is worth it to buy another one and I doubt they're going to do anymore bundles for the system.  I guess I'll just wait till I can find a Wii, put that in the living room and then stick the GCN in my room.

It is not going to be like the PSone that was slowly dropped down in price as time went by. Its going to just cease to be restocked and then stores will discount it till they are all gone. I can get you a GC for pretty cheap if you want, but you have to do something for me.

Has Nintendo stopped manufacturing these yet?

A part of me hopes so so that they can step up the Wii manufactoring, other part of me wishes GC could keep going for a little while longer.

If there's a price drop, I don't think it'll be advertised. NOA seems hell bent on consistently shoot the GC in the face despite it being dead. I just saw a Zelda commercial that said, "Only for Wii." Advertising a price drop would probably give it a small breath of life to cling to.

If you are going to purchase a GameCube I would suggest trying to grab one with the digital video OUT.  These were on the first models.

You can read about it here:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/nintendogamecube/component_faq.jsp

With a special wire you can view many games in 480P mode, and they look REALLY nice.

My original gamecube had it, so I was fortunate.  I guess when The Gamecube came out few people were using digital let alone component wires back then!

Now though, many people have TV capable of this.

Otherwise you can just get a Wii, but I heard the GC emulator on it is not that good...

Still, it's nice to pick up GC games now for around $20 or less

I have had no problems with mine. Some reported that Phantasy Star Online I & II doesn't work either, but not a problem here and I played through Baiten Kaitos Origins from start to finish without so much as a hitch.

Same.. the Wii plays my Cube games perfectly.

Then forget what I said about emulation

But I will keep my GameCube for sentimental reasons.  I will eventually pick up a Wii.

Just a note...This Xmas I went everywhere and couldn't find a Wii. I got pretty fed up and bought an Xbox360.

I think the Wii offers games and playability that the Xbox360/PS3 doesn't offer. I think these machines actually complement each other. Which is why I got the Xbox360.

I won't get the PS3 for other reasons I won't state here...

To the original poster, I can only assume prices on the gamecube will go down, unless you have some rare one.

Considering the Wii doesn't emulate GameCube games, I don't see how the emulation could be a problem.

LOL the GameCube already dropped in value.  It's not worth much unless you want to use the GB Player in progressive scan (very valuable).

Whether it drops in PRICE is a different matter.

You'd think that, but they still go for about $50+ used on eBay and such.

Well if you are going to buy a gamecube I would definitely say buy the one with the progressive scan connection.  Well worth it in my opinion.  Or buy the Wii

I need to get a GameBoy Player. I still have my early 2002 GameCube (complete with digital-out port), but with the Wii I really don't have much use for it anymore. That won't stop me from keeping it around, however. I got fed up with selling gaming stuff only to regret it later, so I just decided I'm not going to do it anymore.

Anyway, a GameBoy player would be nice.
