Title: Brothers in arms coming to the wii!
Post by: Viewtiful mario on January 03, 2007, 05:23:28 PM
Along with two other games.

I just hope this doesn't end up being sloppy like Far cry (yes I have played it) and seeing as how this won't be pushed as a launch title maby it won't.  Anyone played a Brothers in arms game? Are they any good? Should I be excited at all?

It is a pretty good game having played it on a PC. It feels like Full Spectrum Warrior, but far more involed. I found it alot more fun than their more modern counterparts like GRAW since that just ends up more of a spary and pray mess. The AI is also better than FSW, both friendly and OPFOR.

I'm actually pondering owning every FPS game on the Wii... this is so weird, I suck at FPS games!

Avoid Far Cry, it's aiming is ok, but it's framerate makes you feel like your playing a PC game on a computer that can't handle it's graphics.  Plus it also has trouble telling whether you want to zoom in or whenther you want to slash your knife, which for me killed it because melee attacking is such a big part of the game (since it raises your preditor meter).

To be honest, after the initial shock of the graphics and framerate of farcry, it is not a bad game.  I found myself forgetting all about the graphics because I was having a lot of fun.   Anyways, this is great news!  I'm hoping they arn't terrible ports.  Gotta love the 3rd party support so far for the wii.

I didn't care for brothers in arms on PC.  I don't like ordering your team around. I would rather the other dudes just do what they want and i'll take care of all the bad guys Rambo-style.  I still kinda want to play farcry

The thing about far cry was when i played it, it had trouble telling whether i was slashing with my knife or zooming in, and since slashing brought up your predtor metor i did it a lot and it just wasn't smooth enough for me.
The graphics didn't bother me but the framerate was just too much to deal with.

Hopefully tey're able to add some kind of online play.

Ok my opinion on far cry has changed.  I was really enjoying the game until i got to a part where it would freeze no matter what I did.  I returned my rental and picked up trauma center instead.   Good game if it was not for that freezing glitch

You can "Rambo" it, but it is really hard if not near impossible. I enjoyed it alot due to the fact it was like a thinking mans FPS. Having to think a little in a FPS is a rarity. Never the less, it doesn't stop me from enjoying a good blastfest. You went into the game with the wrong idea as to what it was trying to archive. By making you interact often with your team mates to reach a goal that would otherwise been impossible deepens your relationship with them. Having the game based on actual engaugments didn't hurt either.

Having played this on PC though, I have little reason to buy this unless it is a relatively new game.

The first Brothers in Arms game on Hugebox is one of the greatest FPS games I've ever played, although I never did seriously bother with the whole managing the squad thing. They'd never actually be of any use anyway. IT'S ALL UP TO ME. The sequel was extremely rushed though. Kinda looking forward to this~

The team aspect of Brothers In Arms just doesn't appeal to me. I would rather play an FPS with a team of bots where it doesn't matter if they die. Kinda like in Half Life 2.  The teams in BIA need to be babysat.

The whole Rambo thing is pretty much covered in the vast majority of FPS games.

I welcome more squad-based games cuz they involve more interesting challenges: strategy and leadership.

If I want to lead a Squad, I'll play Pikmin, thankyouverymuch.

(Bad experiences with old Ghost Recon and SWAT games)

ahahahahhhaahah

then you should completely avoid BWii.

(if you meant the original Ghost Recon PC games, and not the console stuff, it's understandable.  The console games, are simply insulting).

The visuals on this game look like an XBOX game...look at those blades of grass.

Oh yeah, I'm looking at the images on my new Nintendo Power magazine that just came through the mail.  Visuals look nice.  Hopefully, they follow through with the co-op mode and maybe even...online CO-OP!

Since Brothers in Arms is now scheduled to come out in June 08, and development for the game was started around August 06, Do we dare hope that this extended time means game was/is going to be graphically upgraded, have the multiplayer added back in, or (hopefully) both?

Isn't this game from the same team that is (re)making... porting Samba de Amigo for Wii? If so then an answer has been found for such a delay, or they're just lazy I guess.

BiA cancelled in favor of Sega's musik monkey?  OK

non-games were the better investment from the start.  Good for the dev.

REVIEW

Brothers in Arms: Double Time is a port of the Xbox games "Road to Hill 30" and "Earned in Blood", and comes as a 2-disc package.

Positives
+ Runs in 480p widescreen
+ It's an M-rated war game by a third party publisher
+ It made it to stores
+ It wasn't advertised
+ I think it's a better war simulation than Medal of Honor
+ The environments have plenty of foliage and obstacles, far from a "flat floor" level design in many shooters.  Generally looks better than the original Ghost Recon
+ Level design encourages use of squad tactics: assigning suppressive fire and maneuvering around structures to flank enemy positions
+ Telling squadmates where to stand and when to shoot is easy
+ No health packs
+ Sounds effects are OK.  They haven't changed in 10 years
+ Probably aims/moves better than Far Cry and Red Steel

Negatives
- No DPLII surround sound.  A war shooter without surround sound made after 1998 is a crime
- It's a port by Ubisoft
- It was released anyway
- Other people might play this game
- Reticule response is a little delayed/floaty, similar to RE: Umbrella Chronicles
- Bounding box is too large for my liking (still smaller than Red Steel), transition from non-turning to steady spinning feels sudden and jarring
- Bounding box, turning speed options aren't detailed and therefore aren't helpful
- Collision/damage detection SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.  Enemies in crouched positions behind barriers seem perfectly protected from bullets: exposed heads and limbs don't respond to gunfire despite steady aim.
- Framerate SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.  Tries to hold on to the magick 30fps when you're alone.  Drops to Perfect Dark levels when 2 or more characters are on-screen and within ~20-ft of you.  Poor framerate destroys aiming functionality; aiming reticule becomes a victim of the framerate and becomes hard to recover when it jumps around during intense action-packed slideshows.  Game is generally playable (15-20fps) when opposing forces are fighting at longer ranges.
- No bullet holes are generated, meaning there's no good way for me to evaluate reticule aim vs. in-game results
- The only single one Nunchuk waggle command this game has does not work well.  I'm not sure how many times I'm supposed to twirl it, I end up doing 3-4 hard RRR2-type twirls to make things happen
- Health is measured gradually; no specific body damage or immediate incapacitations
- Non-enemy objects are indestructible
- No friendly fire
- Lacks music in general, not even a Band of Brothers type theme
- Voice acting is not Sega-bad (otherwise it'd be somewhat likable).  Shouting and profanity sound unnatural, like they don't know what they're shouting at or just having a conversation with a wall
- Loading screens are ugly
- No dynamic lighting
- Another brilliant use of the Unreal Engine by Ubisoft
- The good qualities aren't real, like the game engine implies
- It makes me lose confidence in Samba de Amigo

Final Score:
"I'll sell this back to GameStop tomorrow" out of possible 10.  (not an average)

[I'll revise this if my time with "Earned in Blood" is noticeably more positive]

:(

I was kinda hoping the port would at least be decent, since the Xbox games aren't backwards compatible with the 360. UBISOOOOFT.

lol that frame rate sounds even worse than the craptastic PS2 port.

It sounds about on par with the DS version.

Update!

I tried out "Earned in Blood", and very first moment you're given control, the framerate is **** even with only 1 character on the screen.  That seals the deal, not gonna play anymore of this product, gonna sell it to GameStop when I get the chance to swing by, yay capitalism.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, you trusted Gearbox? I always saw them as the place for farming out crap you don't want your devs to soil their hands on.

I take back what I said about Gearbox, Brothers in Arms: Double Fail is actually the combined fault of Demiurge and Ubisoft. (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3804/postmortem_brothers_in_arms_.php)

*Note, despite what they say, the game does not look good nor does it run well, and there is no high quality product to be found.  Another classic case of Ubi pushing a cheap port project onto an inexperienced developer.  Of course, the retail price doesn't reflect that.
