Title: Different versions of the Wii Opera Browser - Trial Version?
Post by: Rhoq on December 28, 2006, 03:56:11 PM
Does anyone know if there are multiple versions of Opera floating around the Wii Shop Channel? The reason why I am asking is because I downloaded the "Internet Channel" as soon as it became available last week (Dec. 22). A friend received a wireless router for Christmas and downloaded it this past Tuesday (Dec. 26). My version of Opera can recognize "keywords" so I don't have to type a full url (ie. I can just type in "ikea" to take me to "www.ikea.com"). On my friend's Wii, Opera returns an error if, at the very least, he doesn't include the ".com".

Since this is a beta, the Opera for Wii team could be updating it as time goes on as they receive user feedback and add more features. I downloaded the browser just minutes after it was released and it does automatically append the ".com", even if ".org" or ".net" would be the better choice.

It is interesting that Opera would remove that feature on later builds.

Go to a page like this http://familyinternet.about.com/library/blbrowserinfo.htm and see if it reports different versions.

Are you sure it appends the .com and doesn't just return the first google result like Firefox does?  I have no idea how Opera works.

"You are using Opera null." (From a PC, not a Wii.)

Try this page and look at the HTTP_USER_AGENT string.

Wii:
Opera/9.00 (nintendo Wii; U; ; 1309-9; en)

Opera9 has a better algorithm system, which searches for a direct link using google to what was typed in, if not then will show results

Actually, I think there might be different BETA versions out there, since I keep hearing of people having trouble with viewing Youtube videos, yet I have never had a problem with them.  So they may be updating it as they go.

I know I have gotten annoyed sometimes when I put in a period after a sentence and the browser automatically adds "us" after the period every time.  Maybe they did away with those features for the moment and are working on improving them or something.

I am having a problem with some YouTube videos in my version.  They play for literally three seconds and the video is over and it asks the usual "play again?".  I'll try redownloading the browser and see what happens.

Update:  I "erased" the Internet Channel from my console and redownloaded it.  First thing that's odd is it saved my favorites list (maybe those are saved on your online account?), but apparently the problem is still there.  Three seconds of flash video and it goes boom.

Update 2: I'm watching a Rocky and Bullwinkle episode via Google Video right now.  It's a minute into it with no issues...

Edit:  Oops, I take that back, upon looking in the Wii memory management, the favorites and settings for the Internet Channel are in there.

That happens to me too. I am using Firefox and sometimes videos don't load properly.

Give Youtube some time, they seem to be always fixing some sort of technical problem.

I managed to get some Wi-Fi access today and do the updates (No problems, was actually quite fast and easy), but could not find where to download the browser.

Now I was quite pissed, and so was everyone else, so it may have been obvious, but would appreciate some help which menu to go to.

Thanks Mario, I'll check that out as soon as I get some Wi Fi access again. I actually went into the shop but did not see it, my "dumb" brother was rushing me to get going.

Have a great new year!

The favourites are saved under a savegame file in your data management, not the webserver. It is erased if you wipe that savegame, as I found out when people had problems booting the software as their Wii would crash every time they used the keyboard. Opera suggested erasing that file, but mentioned nothing about losing all of your favourites (oops. oh well, at least www.wiili.com has an amazing links page which helped me find it all again)

I get your problem whenever I try to watch videos or what not when I've been using the browser for a while. One would assume the cache is filled to the rim and the Wii has no where else to store the FLV flash video file while it's downloading, so it ends it. One way to fix this is to reboot your web browser.. Also, make sure that you don't completely fill your Wii's internal memory as this would probably contribute to it as well.

In the future I would love to see the temporary cache stored on SD cards if possible to keep the errors down to a minimum.
