Title: Wii Internet Channel Now Available
Post by: WindyMan on December 21, 2006, 07:33:00 PM
The free trial version of the Wii Opera browser can now be obtained through the Wii Shop Channel.

Everyone in the world can now surf the Internet with the Wii remote.  Nintendo just put the Wii Internet Channel up in the Wii Ware section of the Wii Shop Channel, and you can now hop on your console to download it.  Weighing in at a hefty 278 blocks, the Opera-powered browser works just like a standard web browser, only designed for displaying webpages on your television screen.

The browser features the ability to zoom in to a page with the Wii controller's plus/minus buttons, an area for bookmarks and a special display mode that breaks up tables to make text very large for easy reading.  Although you can't download MP3s or watch most types of video files, the Opera browser does support Flash.  That means you can point your Wii to video sites like YouTube and watch Internet videos on your TV screen.  Sweet!

The browser is kind of bare-bones, but Nintendo stresses that it is just a trial version of the software.  More features could be added to the full version, which means the full version could also cost you some Wii Points when Nintendo makes it available.  The trial version is free to download, though, so you might as well try it out.  We're sure the first site you'll want to navigate to on your Wii is Nintendo World Report.  As you'll soon see, we look sexy on your television screen.  We designed it to be that way!

Youtube, you say?

Here's the best Youtube link to go to if you're reading this on your Wii:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScuUIjsr3Ds

(I used my computer to copy and paste this so I didn't have to memorize it and type it--has anyone found such a feature on the Wii yet?)

It's official, YouTube is the Wii's new killer app.  I hope Opera implements a full-screen option for video in the final build.

YouTube already has a full-screen mode that looks great on Wii Opera.  There is still a bar at the bottom with video controls and another bar with the Opera controls, but the video takes up the great majority of the screen.

Here are a few more essential links to visit with your Wii:

http://www.fat-pie.com/supermario.htm

http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/mario.php

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phTfYA0oxmk

Edit: Ok, apparently these links don't work on the Wii.  Is it because they're trying to open in a new window from this site?

Lotta kinks to work out still:

-Limited Flash support (check gametrailers.com)
-It spits some sites right back to the homepage after a click or a scroll (gamespot.com)
-Gmail outright freezes the console.
-Some Flash sound lag; I think it occurs if you play around with the zoom while video is running, not sure of the trigger but it can happen.
-Support for WMV or QT streams would be nice (not expecting it though).
-Some pages have the Wii page scroll option, some have their own scrollbar. Probably a webcode thing, but kinda weird.

Not hating on it since it's beta though. Proper Youtube function is a big deal alone!

i have to agree with Famicom, it sucks that some sites cause it to kick you back to the start menu. Luckily this is just the beta (and that this will not replace my computer).

Hmm, out of curiosity, can someone check java applet support?

If you want a link, try doing this test...

If the applet doesn't load I wonder if there is a way you can install java.... hrmm.

This sucks.  Flash support is great, but not supporting Flash 8 is just ridiculous.  I hope this is a consequence of the beta.

Edit: confirmed in the opera press release... Only Flash 7 is supported.

I was forced awake this morning by a strange noise, and when I looked around I saw that my Wii had come alive with blue light and the noise was coming from my Wii.  Too bad it didn't download it for me, but I did after getting out of the shower.

It's blurry because of the TV's resolution. Zoom in or press the 2 button to read.

Worked for me... Checked a few messages OK.

Problems I found....

- Passwords are not masked when your entering them
- The "Back" button doesn't work (didn't go to the previous page and caused a freeze for me)

Edit: UncleBob wants an adblocker, I want an image blocker to I can block UncleBob's avatar

I couldn't get the Wii scroll arrows to work.  I couldn't move any page I went to.  I only played with it for five minutes though because I had to go to work.  I'll see if I can get it going when I get home.

I'm not going to type anything from my Wii (on NWR, I did for VGM) because I'v got my computer beside my tv, but I can see the usefullness of non-gamers browsing the internet with the Wii.

Edit: Nintendo needs to release a wireless keyboard, and Opera should add a version of their browser for those that have a HDTV.

Ditto, my computer is next to my TV.  However what I would like to see is the ability to bookmark to some latest newscasts in full screen.  That way someone not into PC's could just click favorites an then latest local news and be greated with video of the latest news cast.  No webpage navagation needed.

I can confirm. I hope the flash version gets upgraded. However, the timing of this "requirement" from Youtube is a little too much of a coincidence.

The vast majority of FLV libraries and such are specific to Flash 8.  I was actually shocked to see youtube run at all to be honest with you.

Title: RE: Wii Internet Channel Now Available
Post by: Pale on December 22, 2006, 05:44:19 AM
Could this be an issue of how you are entering YouTube?  There is a chance that 95% of youtube code is Flash7 compliant, but they do a check for flash 8 for that remaining 5% of code.  If you figure out a way to enter the site without hitting one of these checks or you otherwise trick the check, it may still run mostly ok.

This would also explain why some people were having lockup issues with YouTube.  I dunno.
Title: RE: Wii Internet Channel Now Available

I've tricked flash8 sites by changing the identifier on the flash7 plugin, but that's not an option here.

While I do find it to be a little gimmicky (especially on a standard-res set), and I do have my system set near my main computer, it may still be handy.  I often have periods of time where I am mastering audio or video, during which I shut off my NIC to save resources (those plugins are very intensive).  I often find myself wanting, or needing, to check a website while waiting the hour or so it takes to finish the processes, so this would allow me to do so somewhat more handily.

For those wondering, it seems Wii supports Flash 7 Mobile.  That would explain some of the Flash woes (including the front page on NWR).
Title: RE:Wii Internet Channel Now Available
Post by: TJ Spyke on December 22, 2006, 08:22:52 AM
Did anybody else have problems where sometimes clicking on a link doesn't work? Even on NWR I had to click on a link several times before it would start to load (other times it would work fine). I guess problems are to be expected since it's a beta version.

I wish they would also say how to add pages to your favorites, it took me awhile to figure that out.

Of course not, using flash as virtual memory is a quick way to get over the 100 000 or so rewrites flash memory can take.

I believe Wii has over twice as much main memory (not including video memory) as the GameCube. GC had 24MB + 16MB = 40MB, so Wii has over 80MB.  I've seen my Wii browser lock up on Flash-intensive sites (I'm not sure it is correctly reclaiming memory), but 80MB should be enough for standard browsing.

valo via the net channel would be my killer app
but it takes too long to load.

also I just figured out if you press "2" in the net channel
it goes into SUPER-zoom, but compromises the original formatting of the site, and you still press "+" to zoom in further.

and + & -
raise and lower the volume
if you're listening to songs in Fotto Channel

back on topic
.: gmail works for me
.: youtube works most of the time
.: its glitched and sputtered and frozen thrice
.: It was the first thing I noticed and I'm still shocked at the loading times, blazing fast..

As many have pointed out, reading small text on my TV is nearly impossible.

I have a SDTV with composite cables.  Would S-video cables improve this (I dont' think so, but I figured I'd ask)?  How about if I upgrade to an EDTV+ and get component cables (I'm not going to; just curious)?

A lot of standard sets take component.  Much cleaner picture and better colors even though they don't do progressive scan.
